Redactle - THE HINTS THREAD

BIWI · 29/06/2022 09:32

Given how difficult it is to offer hints for redactle, without giving it away/being too obvious, this is a specific thread for hints.

Doesn't mean that they should give the game away, but it just stops other players seeing the hint every time they access the main thread.

So from now on, just keep your stats and general comments on the main thread and come here for any hints!

OP posts:

I'm really impressed by people who manage to solve these things - even if it takes a lot of guesses - if they don't know much/anything about the topic. That takes perseverance!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 02/09/2022 20:32

i did science and maths in cse,
not even o level!
i generally get there, touch wood, in the end

dapsnotplimsolls · 02/09/2022 20:48

I try to make myself go to 100 guesses before I start looking for hints/googling but sometimes I just don't know what else to put eg I have a pretty limited range of 'physics' words :)

ManAboutTown · 02/09/2022 21:40

If under the title you see (xx, xxxxxxxx, xxxx - xx, xxxxxxx, xxxx) that is a date of birth and death. Should be able to get those in less than 50 guesses if you are prepared to use Google date pages.

The presence of (xx:xx) is quotes of biblical verses - tougher but it least it points you in the right direction.

The presence of things like { or / with small blanks in between or either side is indication of maths.

InMySpareTime · 02/09/2022 22:01

Subscript small redacted box shapes are usually chemistry, especially when there are a few alternating with single letters.

Noting that format is useful to know the topic is a person, of course, but then working out nationality and occupation(s) can get you to the answer in fewer guesses.

Anyone else find today's an absolute git?

ErrolTheDragon · 05/09/2022 11:46

Perhaps there is a generational divide on this one, there used to be one or more in most households. Though I suppose not everyone would have known that.
There does seem to be a marked divide between people who found it very obvious - mainly from the word lengths perhaps if you are familiar with the term - and those finding it a pig.

InMySpareTime · 05/09/2022 12:25

I took longer than I should have, because I never knew it was hyphenated. I fell into the same trap the time it was the new-fangled version too, you'd think I'd learn!

TheHideAndSeekingHill · 05/09/2022 12:42

You may be right Errol. I have definitely heard the term, probably once in science a long time ago, despite being familiar with the "object" in a home sense.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 05/09/2022 13:07

seemed like a repeat to me

Dreikanter · 05/09/2022 13:21

I got sidetracked by what looked like a 22 letter word which turned out to be not/a/22/letter/word.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 05/09/2022 18:11

i can never find out the length of the word

MrsElm · 05/09/2022 18:58

Any chance of a clue for today? Pretty please 🙏🏻 ☺️

Have you got anything?

MrsElm · 05/09/2022 19:40

I have location. I googled and got what I thought would be right, but it wasn't. Initials LK.

Dreikanter · 05/09/2022 19:44

Your second initial is right, but not the first.

ApolloandDaphne · 05/09/2022 19:45

Those aren't the initials. I really don't know how to do hints for this game! You will need a lot more than just location.

dapsnotplimsolls · 05/09/2022 19:46

It's an absolute sod. Once you get the right nationality, you just need to go for typical first names. Good luck getting the surname though!

ApolloandDaphne · 05/09/2022 19:46

Dreikanter · 05/09/2022 19:44

Your second initial is right, but not the first.

The second one isn't right at all. If it helps both words start with the same letter.

Dreikanter · 05/09/2022 19:49

Dreikanter · 05/09/2022 19:44

Your second initial is right, but not the first.

Doh! I’m wrong. They are both wrong. Sorry.

Dreikanter · 05/09/2022 19:51

It’s very obscure. Once you get the first word then Google for the second for words with 9 letters that fit the right geographic area and time frame.

dapsnotplimsolls · 05/09/2022 19:53

Let's say his first name is Bob. I ended up googling 'famous Bobs' and found someone with the right number of letters, location and time period :)

PuttingDownRoots · 05/09/2022 20:07

I identified a key thing the person had done, then googled.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 05/09/2022 20:32

I've been all round the globe and can't get the nationality!
