Redactle - THE HINTS THREAD

BIWI · 29/06/2022 09:32

Given how difficult it is to offer hints for redactle, without giving it away/being too obvious, this is a specific thread for hints.

Doesn't mean that they should give the game away, but it just stops other players seeing the hint every time they access the main thread.

So from now on, just keep your stats and general comments on the main thread and come here for any hints!

I got the second word in the title and admit to googling to get the first word. In our circle the jury is out as to whether that's cheating.................

Why would it be cheating?! You can't possibly know everything about every subject - you're bound to need help sometimes! As far as I'm concerned, if I've guessed enough to work out what the subject is, therefore I know what to Google, I'm winning!

I did a whole lotta googling with today's!

Scuttlingherbert · 29/08/2022 20:45

Any help today? Can I say what I know so far or is that a spoiler for other people?

MrsElm · 29/08/2022 20:51

I would really appreciate some help, please!

dapsnotplimsolls · 29/08/2022 21:05

Think of the title of an Agatha Christie novel, connected to her second husband's job.

Hmm, do you have any thing else?

ApolloandDaphne · 29/08/2022 21:33

Have you any phrases that you can Google? What sort of themes do you think you have uncovered?

dapsnotplimsolls · 29/08/2022 21:36

Have you got the right geographical area?

MrsElm · 29/08/2022 21:37

I have ancient Egypt. That is all.

dapsnotplimsolls · 29/08/2022 21:42

You need to head further East.

InMySpareTime · 29/08/2022 21:42

@MrsElm

Here's a slightly cryptic hint:

When the sun

Hits a tribe

Like a big pizza pie

Scuttlingherbert · 29/08/2022 21:46

I've also got a bit of mileage from the age a type of medal but I'm still stuck

dapsnotplimsolls · 29/08/2022 21:49

Look at my first clue again - title begins with 'Murder' - that'll get you the right area.

MrsElm · 29/08/2022 21:51

I'm sorry but I am still stumped!

I'm guessing a lot of people won't have come across this and will need to Google, am I right?

I'm not even sure what to Google!

Plantstrees · 29/08/2022 22:36

What helped me was reading through the words that are given to start with in the article - there is at least one " ..Near...." Near with a capital N (not at the beginning of a sentence) is a huge clue. That was my starting point.

Admittedly it is not a common word, but a bit of Googling once you have the general area should get you there.

AuntieStella · 29/08/2022 22:38

It tool me 633 guesses, so quit a lot of those were redundant auto-plurals

It probably took me 600 of them to work out what to start googling at all, but it was discoverable once I'd worked out what to research!!

I don't usually come on this thread, so I'm not sure how blatantly to hint!!

Novum · 29/08/2022 23:00

If ever there was an illustration of how you can't do these things without google, today's is it.

I'm annoyed that I got the singular of the word in question as guess no. 107, but didn't think of adding an s till no. 212. Doh.

MrsElm · 29/08/2022 23:11

I'm giving up now. I will check back tomorrow to see what the answer is.

There's a suggestion on the main thread which is something of a cheat but quite amusing that it works!

InMySpareTime · 30/08/2022 06:11

@MrsElm you're literally halfway there already from my clue. Read it again and see how it differs from the song.

ApolloandDaphne · 30/08/2022 06:23

@MrsElm sing the song clue again but rhyme the end with tights!

But not Hittites 🤔
