Are there any fellow Flightradar geeks on here? There is a red tui plane over Manchester right now squaking. Any idea why?

It looks like it may be descending now ?

How much information do the passengers get told when this sort of thing happens?

I'd imagine minimal.

I once spent a whole 4 hour flight terrified because I thought the engine casing on the plane had turned black (I figured it had over heated and become smoke damaged and was waiting for it to explode)

Turns out it was the reflection of the dark atmosphere above at 40k feet making it look dark 😳

Badger1970 · 27/06/2022 13:01

@bendmeoverbackwards it was Heathrow - we ended up going out over the channel and circling for about 45 minutes before a 2nd landing as it was "morning rush hour.

The lady sat in front of us was a frequent flyer as her DP lived in NYC and said that it happens all the time at Heathrow though Shock

We were once on what would now be a 'red plane ' alert. Set off, landing gear jammed, the pilot tried to resolve it but couldn't. We turned round, circled for a while and then landed at Manchester with emergency vehicles arriving alongside the runway as we landed. Everyone was fine, I don't even remember it being particularly scary but that could be because we were staying calm for 3 children!.

Hope all goes smoothly for this particular flight.

coldandverytired · 27/06/2022 13:01

My tracking of it is going a bit haywire- not moving smoothly like other flights I watch, jumping about all over the place! Is it just mine?

namechangeanonymous · 27/06/2022 13:02

Thankfully I have never experienced this - what sort of announcements do they give passengers on board? To what extent do they know of problems?

monsterastuckiosa · 27/06/2022 13:02

Altitude is dropping a bit...

TokyoSushi · 27/06/2022 13:02

Now also not working and flight radar watching, it's not far from me. Must be awful to be on it.

Broadswordcalling · 27/06/2022 13:02

Descending.

Mushroo · 27/06/2022 13:02

Seems to be descending now….

motogirl · 27/06/2022 13:02

Seems quite odd, but there could be many less dramatic reasons. They are most likely burning fuel and switching circling area so that they are over one small area. Onboard if they know what is going on it won't be too bad, just disappointing they are 1/3 to their destination.

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 27/06/2022 13:03

It’s already on the Express website www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1631602/tui-emergency-passenger-plane-7700-squawk-code-Boeing-manchester-airport/amp (Googled it, not a Red Top reader lol).
It might be a landing gear or flap issue they’re trying to resolve before they can land. Hence it looks like it’s leisurely pootling around the area at low altitude.

There’s a good interview with a pilot on the FR24 about emergency squawks.

SwedishEdith · 27/06/2022 13:03

Looks like back to Manchester

StopStartStop · 27/06/2022 13:03

Any minute now I'm going to nip into the back garden and wave...

Broadswordcalling · 27/06/2022 13:03

Going back up now. This is really odd.

MadisonAvenue · 27/06/2022 13:03

Under 6000 ft at the moment

I was about to book a flight from Manchester. Non essential. Think I'll take the train 😂

I'm on a Tui flight from Manchester in 2 weeks!

How much information do the passengers get told when this sort of thing happens?

I’ve been on a plane that had to do an aborted landing and another small jet which had to land (after missed aborted landings) at London City during a horrible storm, coming from the West - we literally almost crashed into a Canary Wharf building during our approach.

The crew were really good at keeping us informed, but not whilst they were performing critical tasks. So a lot of it was done during ‘normal’ moments and then they had to focus on the plane. They have checklists to go through and that’s their priority, but I think they always try to keep people informed.

Iottie · 27/06/2022 13:04

@namechangeanonymous When we had problems with our landing gear the pilots were very honest. Explained what it was they were doing as they attempted to dislodge etc.

GreenLeavesRustling · 27/06/2022 13:04

Back to Manchester?

WhaWhaWhaaat · 27/06/2022 13:05

Nr 5kft

bendmeoverbackwards · 27/06/2022 13:05

I've never heard the term squawk before. I can't decide if this information is making me feel better or worse about flying 😂

We were kept informed. It was all very calm and matter of fact.

WhaWhaWhaaat · 27/06/2022 13:05

I'm in my garden and can hear it.

Very cloudy, no visual

PurpleFlower1983 · 27/06/2022 13:06

A friend of mine is on this flight, she posted from the airport bar this morning. Praying everything is ok.
