WWYD baby next door screaming 20 mins now

Parents outside having a smoke.

I just came in from work. Popped upstairs to get something. Hear child crying (their bedroom next to my bathroom). Hear the bedroom door shut loudly next door. Increase in crying from child.
Next thing I know both parents are outside in their back garden. Definitely can hear child as directly below bedroom. Child is hysterically screaming. Child just over a year.

I've been upstairs 25 mins now and they are still crying.

Frequently hear child cry for extended periods overnight but not this hysterically and always assumed parents would be with them as I wouldn't necessarily be able to hear parents trying to calm an upset child.
Often hear them shouting at their older child.

Call Social services?

Yes call. Its not like you are giving a ruling. You letting the professionals know so they can make a judgement. If there's no concern it will be left. Better than if there was concern and they never knew.

Schmz · 25/06/2022 19:43

Yes
trust your instincts that something might be off,

SS or NSPCC for a chat to share your concerns.

If you have genuine concerns about a child, it is right to call.

I sometimes worry about how many people report things that they are not really certain have happened, but you know what you have witnessed today.

Cakeandcoffee93 · 25/06/2022 19:47

callllllllll

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 25/06/2022 19:48

Immediate concerns should be reported to 999.

cushioncovers · 25/06/2022 19:49

Yes please call.

SimonaRazowska · 25/06/2022 19:49

Really? Some parents just let their kids cry it out

Badger1970 · 25/06/2022 19:49

That's horrific.

I'd ring your local social services helpdesk and report a baby in distress going without attention. Some people really shouldn't have kids Sad

Not to the point of hysterical screaming for 20 mins

Higgeldypiggeldy35 · 25/06/2022 19:57

Well im glad my neighbours never called SS on me for letting my baby cry. After months of no sleep leading pnd I decided to try sleep training. It worked. But my child did cry for extended periods in the beginning.

Bigupkyle · 25/06/2022 20:02

? Maybe they are at there wits end and are doing sleep cry it out if the child can be heard a lot at night

Dobbysgotthesocks · 25/06/2022 20:03

Little one has gone quiet now. Sounded like they cried them self to sleep.

Honestly I wouldn't be doing anything at all. You've no idea of the situation

maybe they are, which can be explained and understood. But equally, maybe they’re not. So, why try guessing at all the possibilities.

Bigupkyle · 25/06/2022 20:05

Because I don't feel like anything here sounds remotely worrying at all

Schmz · 25/06/2022 20:09

It’s always easier to talk ourselves out of reporting these sorts of concerns

i heard something that didn’t sound right on a campsite years ago

other campers heard it too and we sort of talked ourselves out of reporting …

every now and then I wonder …..

sammysal · 25/06/2022 20:13

In the real world no one reports this to social services.

I think a lot of adults in my childhood talked themselves out of reporting things that were never quite enough

I wish they had if only to build up a picture

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 25/06/2022 20:14

Only on MN would people report a crying toddler ffs!

If your gut instinct says something is wrong it doesn’t hurt to call.

Im thinking of the case recently where the baby was murdered by the prospective mother. The neighbours were on the stand saying they heard the child crying and being beaten through the walls but they didn’t call anyone because they didn’t want to fall out with the neighbours.

If I was desperate and doing sleep training I still don’t think I would physically leave the house.

Can you tell if the baby is crying in pain?

GoodVibesHere · 25/06/2022 20:27

Of course you don't call social services because a child is crying!!!

Kona84 · 25/06/2022 20:29

all the ICON guidance tells parents it is safer to leave the child in a safe place and go catch your breath if the situation is becoming overwhelming.

they may have been trying to get baby to bed for ages and rather than shake baby, shout at baby they have left them in a safe space while they catch a break.

some babies cry more than others- personally I wouldn’t leave mine for 20 mins crying but we don’t know how long they had been trying to comfort.

i wouldn’t report unless I heard smacking, shouting and then baby crying.

Nanananananana99 · 25/06/2022 20:29

Trigger warning if you are going to read this, it’s one of the most upsetting things I’ve ever read. www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-cumbria-61317886.amp

Rinatinabina · 25/06/2022 20:30

I have left DD for ten minutes max while doing cry it out. I wouldn’t leave her in her room while I went outside for a fag to do it.

I would report in the basis of shouting at the other one too.
