Visiting parents, not allowed to share bed with partner

Revir · 25/06/2022 12:14

Hello,

I am visiting my parents house for a few days. I will be bringing my partner home. We have been together for a year and a half.

Parents have met my partner socially, but this is the first time we will both go home to stay.

I am 23 and they are 26.

My dad is insisting that we sleep in separate beds. My partner will be in my bedroom, and I will be on a camp bed.

Thoughts?

Stay in a hotel!!

OompaLoompaa · 25/06/2022 12:16

Their house, their rules.

Arucanafeather · 25/06/2022 12:17

I agree. Stay in a hotel. Your parents don’t get to dictate whether adults sleep together. Even their own children, especially when their child has left home. My sister had this with our parents 20 years ago. She just said fine I won’t stay over then. Soon sorted it out.

Spohn · 25/06/2022 12:17

Why not stay in an Air B&B? they’re everywhere.

DismantledKing · 25/06/2022 12:18

Unfortunately if you want to stay in their house, you have to abide by their rules

CuriousCatfish · 25/06/2022 12:18

Don't stay there. If they can't accept you are an adult it's their loss.

Alliswells · 25/06/2022 12:19

I'd book a b&b instead tbh

QuebecBagnet · 25/06/2022 12:20

I wouldn’t stay there

Tee20x · 25/06/2022 12:20

Sounds odd esp given that you are an adult £ no longer live there so they must know you share a bed.

Personally I wouldn't be staying there if they were trying to mandate this

Amipreg1 · 25/06/2022 12:20

Absolutely ridiculous. I would stay elsewhere.

WildThing87 · 25/06/2022 12:20

Meh, hardly a big deal. Their house their rules.

If you're not keen, just stay in a hotel or air bnb. But to be honest, I don't think it's that big a deal.

Bonjovispjs · 25/06/2022 12:22

My parents did this to my siblings and I when we were younger, even my brother who was actually living with his girlfriend at the time😂seemed so daft to us, It's a generational thing I think and as other people have said, it's their house so their rules, maybe stay somewhere else.

JosephineGrundy · 25/06/2022 12:25

Do you mean you are allowed in the same room but not in the same bed? Is the bed a single? Anyway, if they cannot accept you are an adult then stay at a hotel. They are entitled to make the rules but you are entitled to find another answer.

ApolloandDaphne · 25/06/2022 12:25

Have they said why they want you to do this? Are they religious? Are you a same sex partnership? It seems a bit odd in this day and age.

Trulyweird1 · 25/06/2022 12:27

I am close to 60 and my parents were the same, but neither I nor my siblings would impose such a ban. Maybe it’s a religious thing? But I guess if they are adamant, then as others suggest, book yourselves somewhere else to stay.

JosephineGrundy · 25/06/2022 12:29

Actually if the bed is small are they just worried that it won't be suitable? My parents would have fretted that the bed would be overloaded causing unnecessary wear and tear😁

alwaysmovingforwards · 25/06/2022 12:32

OompaLoompaa · 25/06/2022 12:16

Their house, their rules.

Yup.

Even if you don't agree with the rules or think they're ridiculous... it's their house.

So respect them or stay in a hotel if you'd both prefer is the simple answer.

Or have a family argument and create an atmosphere.

InFiveMins · 25/06/2022 12:32

I wouldn't stay there. Ridiculous of them to expect an adult couple to not share a bed.

Stay in a hotel instead.

Blogdog · 25/06/2022 12:32

In my 40s and my parents had a similar rule right up until I got married at 31! To be honest I didn’t really care - it was not a hill I wanted to die on and didn’t feel like it was worth an argument. We never stayed for more than two days at a time anyway so it wasn’t exactly a major sacrifice.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 25/06/2022 12:33

I honestly wouldn't stay. Stupid.

Regardless of it being 'their house' ffs. It's ridiculous

cdba88 · 25/06/2022 12:45

Their house their rules. What you gonna do?
Just don't stay there.

Is it because you're a same sex couple? If so I wonder if they'd be bothered if you were opposite sexes.

WimpoleHat · 25/06/2022 12:47

Agree - stay in a hotel. It’s a very strong “I’m an adult now” signal to them in any case…..

BlanketsBanned · 25/06/2022 12:48

Thats totally pointless if you are both in the same room, doesnt he realise you will just get into the other bed if you want to.

Thebeastofsleep · 25/06/2022 12:48

I'd either just go for the day, or I'd stay in a hotel. It's their house so I wouldn't push it with them.

custardbear · 25/06/2022 12:50

OompaLoompaa · 25/06/2022 12:16

Their house, their rules.

Yep!
My ILs didn't let us sleep together til we were married ... 10 years!! We lived together 9 of these but we respected they were traditional people ... his brother however didn't have the same treatment and proceeded to have a baby out of wedlock!! 😋
