Prok and Silkies, you could both get jobs promoting tourism. Gorgeous photos.

Today is my day to mop all the floors and do some batch cooking in preparation for an approaching spell of really hot weather.

Silkierabbit · 09/07/2022 19:00

Thanks Prok I hope you get some time for you on annual leave. Getting my DS on the right track is a full time occupation atm and I keep having to deal with it on holiday too.
DH and I had a surfing lesson today at Sennen which was good fun, kids were too lazy to come, then we quickly looked at Lands End and having aligot with sausages for dinner. We had some nice ice cream at the beach.

Nova, its also easy to get to Isles of Scilly from here, on small plane, helicopter or boat which are lovely bit get booked up early. We went to Tresco last year and that has the mlst beautiful tropical gardens with red squirrels.

Hilda I wouldn't be at all surprised- I'm related to 1/2 the town Grin

Had a fantastic day - granddaughter #2 was on a float, the sun shone. Had a wander round the fair this evening, 1 drink then home. There's going to be some sore heads in the morning! (But not me this year, in fact we felt old, so many looked like 13 year olds trying to be 18 Sad)

nova99 · 09/07/2022 22:31

Thank you @Silkierabbit it truly is beautiful Flowers

@MissConductUS thank you for the welcome. Your deck looks fabulous, what a beautiful area you live in.

DH and I took our two young DC to soft play today to tire them out for when grandma baby sits them tonight, but all it did was tired us plus out and made us sweaty!
Back home from the restaurant and in bed already, rock and roll these days Flowers

Lemonsandlemonade · 09/07/2022 22:55

How beautiful Silkie.

Some children went missing for a short time tonight where I live. It was incredibly frightening luckily they were found about an hour later. Amazing community set out looking for them.

it’s very hot here.

Silkierabbit · 10/07/2022 02:38

That sounds lovely Iwandered

Thanks Nova, hope you can rest soon. Mine are teenagers now and going through a sloth like phase so even just after chemo I can be faster. 😂Today they lazed round the house whilst DH and I did the surfing lesson.

Glad they were found Lemon

I asked on the cancer thread if the boat you see in the Minack picture here is a MNer with cancer sailing around the UK and indeed it is.

Come and tell me your dull and unexciting news 23: Calmly through the day
MissConductUS · 10/07/2022 10:47

Thanks, Nova. I live in an area north of New York City called The Hudson Highlands. The deck runs down the whole side of the house. The house was built into the side of a hill, so the deck is way up off the ground. We're surrounded by a county nature preserve, so it's very woodsy here with lots of wildlife.

That's a lovely beach, Silkie.

Lemons, did they just wander off?

Iwandered, we have some fairs around here too this time of year but they don't serve alcohol, which makes no difference to me since I'm teetotal.

I'm up early. DH, DS and I have a booking to pick blueberries at 9:15, which means we have to be out of the house by 8:45. It's going to be a lovely day here.

Thanks for the luck lemons and half past think I’m going to need it. I did apply and also applied for the school place (as there was competition for it) If I don’t get the job, I’ll turn the school place down.

The job is for a Head I really like and respect Miss, so turning it down after being offered it is a no-go. I don’t want to burn my bridges with her in the future.

I haven’t managed to speak to my current boss yet, despite asking for an urgent 30 minutes last Monday. I suspect she is stalling as she knows it won’t be good news. She’ll hopefully be getting a reference request by Tuesday so it has become an even more pressing chat. Annoyingly, if I thought she had plans for my role, and she had spoken to me, I might have stayed. But once you start looking elsewhere, you can’t undo that.

IWanderedLonely · 10/07/2022 17:39

Miss the fair doesn't serve alcohol, but its in the middle of town so all the pubs are open. They must have made a fortune!

I subscribed to a mindfulness magazine and have been reading it in the garden this afternoon, feeling very relaxed now.

Silkierabbit · 10/07/2022 17:58

DH and I went kayaking to St Michaels Mount today by Marizon for a couple of hours. DH took quite a few photos almost all with me in so had to crop me out and a lot he missed the top half of the castle.

Just back and had a tea and a toast with marmalade.

Good luck with interview Helena

Hope you got lots of nice blueberries MissC

MissConductUS · 10/07/2022 18:22

Helena, that's perfectly understandable and a wise approach to not burn bridges with the Head. Good luck with the ones you did apply for.

Iwandered, I think there are mindfulness podcasts too, but I've never tried them. I'm more of a news, true crime, and paranormal podcast consumer.

Lovely picture, Silkie. It sounds like you are having a lovely holiday.

In dull news, I scrubbed out the Britta pitcher and replaced the filter. I need to set a reminder on my phone to do that more regularly.

In more exciting farm news, Apple Carmel bread was back in the farm store! We also bought cherries and peaches, and two black and white cookies for DS. I think they are a New York regional cookie. It's a soft, spongy cookie with hard icing in two colors. The blueberries were picked by us.

For some reason, they had one of those inflatable blue figures in the blueberry field. Advertising, perhaps.

Silkie what great photos.

The lads were so very

MissC they went about 4 miles on their bikes. Wow blueberry picking. I remember as a child going strawberry picking. Don’t see it so much now.

went to a seaside town with DS and DM. It was hot I had a lovely goats cheese, walnut and beetroot salad. It was delicious.

IWanderedLonely · 10/07/2022 22:17

Silkies love the photo. We've only been to Cornwall once and that was a coach holiday. We stopped off at Marizon for an hour, so couldn't get to the Mount. It's on my holiday list to go back to.

Miss I'm going to have a go at blackcurrant cake with my crop Smile

Lemons whereabouts are you - if it's not too outing? We love Wales.

Lemonsandlemonade · 11/07/2022 05:30

Iwondered - Midish I can’t be more specific because would be outing. Wales is beautiful we are going up to North Wales for our family holiday this year. Abroad next year all being well.

Last week of term for us before we break up for summer. It promises to be a hot one with no air con etc.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 11/07/2022 06:57

DH came home with 2kg of Brombeeren 😀and so made jam last night.
(I am on my tablet and MN kicks me out if I try to look things up.)

10°C here.

sueelleker · 11/07/2022 08:43

We've never had to pre-book a time slot for fruit picking! Just turn up and go.

HildaTablet · 11/07/2022 10:14

I’m envious of all the fruit picking. We used to do it a lot as children, especially strawberries, and I became the designated jam-maker. The first year we moved into our current house, there was a pick-your-own in the field literally down the road, and I was overjoyed thinking of all the lovely summers to come. They never did it again 😭

Just about to set out for work and it is BAKING hot. I hate, hate, hate the heat.

MissConductUS · 11/07/2022 14:31

Prok, 2kg is a lot of blackberries!

Hilda, did the farm down the road just stop their pick your own program?
If you're rural enough to be down the road from a farm there may be others about.

Sue, the farm we go to used to just let people show up and put in the reservation system during covid to support social distancing. They now have a large sign as you drive in saying that reservations are mandatory and posters in the parking area with a QR code you can use to book them with your phone.

I like it better this way. We don't have to worry about not having a place to park or the fields being mobbed. I think the farm likes the fact that employees don't have to handle cash as you pay online when you book.

I made another loaf of blueberry bread yesterday. Between the three of us, it disappears rather quickly.

Plastichanger · 11/07/2022 15:50

All the fruit being picked and bought - how wonderful! I am particularly excited by the reappearance of the apple caramel bread - despite having covid and losing my sense of smell, if I close my eyes, I can smell the apple caramel bread.

my fruit picking news is that I went into the garden first thing to pick some gooseberries. They are a dessert variety and are deliciously sweet now.

In dull news, I am very bored of having covid and of this ridiculous heat. I wish I was in Cornwall with you Silkies. Oh, not sure whether this is dull for everyone else but I was excited to see that Monty Don also seems to keep some silkies - there was a photo of their first eggs on social media today.

Pandatired · 11/07/2022 16:03

Day off today so had a ridiculously long bath then a lovely run with the dog. Now considering what crisps to have tonight, the excitement 😂 kettle chips mature cheddar and red onion or sensations sweet chilli.

Plastichanger · 11/07/2022 17:22

For what it’s worth, my vote would always go for the walkers sweet chilli, Panda

MissConductUS · 11/07/2022 19:08

Welcome, @Pandatired, and thanks for sharing your bathing, ambulation and meal planning news. What's on the menu to go with the chips?

I've just rung the restaurant we hoped to use for DS's graduation party. They don't do parties in private rooms currently due to staff shortages but could put us in one section of one of the dining rooms. I have to ring back tomorrow to speak to the manager about options for doing a fixed menu.

MissConductUS
How do you pay in advance? When we've been (in the UK,) they weigh our fruit when we finish and charge accordingly.

MissConductUS · 11/07/2022 19:20

Sue, if you look at the picture I posted you'll see four one-quart paper containers full of blueberries. When you arrive they check you in against your reservation and give you the four empty containers and that cardboard tray. For what you've paid online, you get to fill the four containers. If you want to pick more, they sell you additional empty containers. I guess the advantage is that you pay in advance and are charged for a minimum of four quarts. If we don't use all of the blueberries in the next couple of weeks I'll just freeze them.

The cherries and peaches we bought were prefilled in the farm store and paid by credit card.
