A thing that you can get lots of other things for.

Yes, this.

So when my eldest was a baby we got a ver ver posh pram and it had loads of extras available. Accessories. I loved buying the little bits for it, I had a cup holder and special mittens.

Then when the kids were a bit older I got a tent and loads of extra bits - internal bedrooms, lights etc. Thing was we all hated camping so really the only joy was my setting it all up in the garden and playing with it.

Then I had a campervan, same thing, loved buying extras and laying them all out and reorganising. Apparently I’ve always done this with my toys and dollies since I was a child.

Now I’m in my 50s I need a new thing. I tried kitchen wear, it didn’t do it for me as I don’t like cooking very much, although I do feel more smug when I put my frozen dinners in a Le Creuset casserole dish.

Im fully aware I sound like a sad fucker but please indulge me. What else is a thing that you can get other things for. Also please don’t say a horse. I don’t want a horse.

A bike.

My DH is forever buying stuff for his.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 23/06/2022 09:51

Knitting, then you can endlessly buy lots of lovely yarn that you’re going to find a pattern for one day, and lots of lovely needles in every size imaginable - pairs and circular, just in case.

Oh, and files for all the patterns you might make one day, and at least one knitting bag for the current WIP (work in progress) or more if you’re like me and usually have 3 WIPS on the go.

Best not to end up with a lot of UFOs (Unfinished Objects) but if you get sick of one you’ve always got the wherewithal for another.

GigglyPuff1 · 23/06/2022 11:01

How about air fryer? Some have quite a few accessories. Some you can add a skewer that spins to make kebabs

OompaLoompaa · 23/06/2022 11:10

I have an expensive Cresulet habit.

Oooooh get on Lovehoney and buy a shit load of dildos!

Can confirm you’ll knacker yourself out so much you’ll not be bothered needing a thing for a thing for a while 🤣🤣

MeMe3Spoons · 23/06/2022 11:30

Learn to ride a motorbike, there is endless safety gear and kit and then once you have a bike there are all the accessories and modifications/upgrades you can make to it. There are hours to be spent talking to other bikers about their carefully considered purchases and explaining your own at events and meetings and chance encounters. Every purchase is rigourously researched and very satisfying and it is all terribly addictive ... plus you get to ride a motorbike which is very cool and very zen all at once Grin

Sidge · 23/06/2022 11:38

I’m not one for “stuff”, but have become rather partial to those online escape puzzle games.

I can lose hours playing them.

StopDrivingIntoMyFence · 23/06/2022 11:44

Potter's Wheel. Then you'll need lots of lovely clay and a kiln and all the glazes. You'll have to get a potter's shed or a room in your house. Racks for drying all the bowls and mugs and lovely stuff you will make. I want this in my next house!

peanuts18 · 23/06/2022 12:14

Scentsy - I got totally obsessed, waxes, warmers (I’ve got 7 atm) fragrance flowers, cleaning sprays, car bars etc (and no I don’t sell it myself!)

notafruit · 23/06/2022 12:31

As you say you don't like cooking, then I suggest a Ninja foodie. You can get loads of accessories for them. I hate cooking, and use my ninja most days now instead of the oven or hob. Cakes, kebabs, stew, dried orange slices for your gin...
Or as others suggest a craft hobby. I can never have enough yarn or crochet hooks although my family disagrees.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 23/06/2022 13:29

Soap making? All the moulds, fragrances, colours and containers
Plus fiddling with wrapping if you use them for gifts

laurajayneinkent · 23/06/2022 13:36

I "collect" lovely stationery and arts & crafts items that I will probably never use.....but they're PRETTY!!!
😍🤩❤

Resin art?

I second Resin, I have 2 subscription boxes where I do a project each month, this month was a Carousel with mini horses and the other was a felt Animal (they zigged to do something else crafty) They are unbound less and if you just stick to the subscription box they can be bounded at the same time. Since starting Resin I have also purchased a 3d printer to make my own moulds and I desperately want a cricut now to make my work better.
You can make all sorts

@TheRoadToRuin - oh our Mn quiche is still going on HayDay! Far fewer members, but we still love to chat.

It was full when I started playing and we set up another. called it Another MN Quiche IIRC.
I still have the game but I daren't open it for fear of reviving my addiction.

Staynow · 23/06/2022 13:54

Well we have just got an inflatable hot tub and I'm looking at accessories - mat to go under, chemicals to keep it clean, covers, steps, drinks holders....

BuntyMcHooves · 23/06/2022 13:58

Cycling! There’s always lots you can buy… clothes, accessories, tools, new/different pedals/handlebars/gear set ups…

or open water swimming … cossies, goggles, hats, watches (for measuring distance), tow floats, towels/robes….

BuntyMcHooves · 23/06/2022 14:03

…or rock painting. Addictive, mindful, great for rainy days. Loads of lovely pens, paints, brushes to collect. There’s a FB group called love on the rocks uk which is great for inspo

ShandaLear · 22/06/2022 12:18

I was going to say Star Wars Lego, but this could work.

😂😂😂

Ibizamumof4 · 23/06/2022 14:37

Dog or caravan spring to mind

Somethingneedstochange · 23/06/2022 14:43

Does it have to be stuff? What about picking a room and decorating it and reorgonizing one room at a time?

CriticalCondition · 23/06/2022 15:28

Beekeeping. You start with a few thousand bees, a beesuit and a single hive. You also need a smoker and a hive tool.
But soon there are more supers, stands, floors, crown boards, queen excluders, frames, foundation, queen catchers, queen markers (different colours for different years if 'rules' are your thing), syrup feeders, fondant.
And that's without the honey harvesting (centrifugal honey spinner, refractometer, trays, strainers, buckets, jars, lids, labels).
Or the beeswax candle making (pans, more strainers, wicks, moulds).
You've probably got 100,000 bees by now. And a shed to put all the kit in. But they take up less room than a horse and pretty much look after themselves over winter.

RomeoOscarXrayIndigoEcho · 23/06/2022 15:36

Calligraphy and other fancy lettering styles. Develop a skill/talent and have the most wonderful handwriting.

turkeyboots · 23/06/2022 15:44

I second open water swimming. Swimsuits and wetsuits for all weathers and a mountain of accessories.

Or Live action role play or reenactments? A relative has a whole shed for her medieval tents and equipment and is always making clothes and shoes. And has a van and trailer to move it all! An all consuming hobby.

RomeoOscarXrayIndigoEcho · 23/06/2022 16:33

Star Trek. There's a universe of possibility out there.

I have plates, posters, books, T-shirts, life size cardboard cut outs, Starfleet uniform, jewellery, ships, mugs and so much more.

HRHBreathMints · 23/06/2022 17:02

You need a Cricut
