A thing that you can get lots of other things for.

Yes, this.

So when my eldest was a baby we got a ver ver posh pram and it had loads of extras available. Accessories. I loved buying the little bits for it, I had a cup holder and special mittens.

Then when the kids were a bit older I got a tent and loads of extra bits - internal bedrooms, lights etc. Thing was we all hated camping so really the only joy was my setting it all up in the garden and playing with it.

Then I had a campervan, same thing, loved buying extras and laying them all out and reorganising. Apparently I’ve always done this with my toys and dollies since I was a child.

Now I’m in my 50s I need a new thing. I tried kitchen wear, it didn’t do it for me as I don’t like cooking very much, although I do feel more smug when I put my frozen dinners in a Le Creuset casserole dish.

Im fully aware I sound like a sad fucker but please indulge me. What else is a thing that you can get other things for. Also please don’t say a horse. I don’t want a horse.

This is why blokes do golf, motorbikes and now cycling - there's always crap to buy to 'enhance' the experience (or for other people to buy for birthdays, Christmas etc. Everything from magazine subscriptions, whisky decanters in the shape of golf balls, GPS systems for the bike to record trips/miles cycled/speed/ number of times sworn at by car drivers, lycra shirts with logos, sunglasses, water bottles.

Cycling definitely.

Oh I could have written this!

I've moved to somewhere with a historical building a mile away so I have gone crazy buying postcards from 1900-1960 (written and posted, I have hundreds of them now) and old souvenirs with the place on (plates, coins, etc).

We won't start on my crafting stash (!) but do you have a local place you could obsess over?!

Ryobi cordless power tools. You buy a battery with your first one and then you can get all sorts of other little (and big) tools you power with your battery pack. It’s not all grinders and drills and.rufty tufty stuff - we’ve got a brilliant little sander that sits in your hand for fiddly bits of architrave and things, and just bought a thing that pumps your car tyres up to a set value in seconds. New models coming out all the time. Includes vacuum cleaners of all sorts, a thing for washing your windows with and some lights you can use in a power cut. Every time I go and see my dad he’s got a new toy.

Now we’re talking.

Im not familiar with Ryobi. I went through a Shark vacuum and mop phase but it’s passing slowly.

A Dremel!!! Millions of accessories...😍😍😍

7catsisnotenough · 22/06/2022 10:43

And then a dolls' house 😉

Nobheadex · 22/06/2022 10:45

Googling Dremel. Grunting.

Yes, cycling would be a good one as there is endless maintenance for bikes, plus all the accessories to go with it. Or, hiking as even if you don't end up going that much, all the things you need for it will come in useful - raincoat, walking boots, rucksack etc.

OldTinHat · 22/06/2022 10:56

Oh! The Dremel!

Yes, I have one of those and a million accessories!! I don't even know what most of them do 😁

You need one OP. Far better than a postcard!

Gel nail set. You have to buy the LED lamp, base coats, top coats etc and there are so many brands. Cleansers, removers, oils etc. Could move into art work etc. Seems endless to be honest.

I only know this as I’m buying a starter kit for a friends bday as she spends a fortune on her nails but can no longer afford to get her nails done every month.

summermornings · 22/06/2022 10:58

Just the gel polish set

Pbbananabagel · 22/06/2022 11:00

Photography - get a vintage camera, set up a darkroom and start printing your own photos

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 22/06/2022 11:05

Lego. Pick a theme and keep buying the new sets as they come out. You could get the flowers and succulents for example. Or build up a street of modular buildings.

OkyDoke · 22/06/2022 11:05

A Cricut!

EnterACloud · 22/06/2022 11:07

Aquarium? Friend’s husband has one and is always buying new bubblers, fish, castles and whatsits for it.

another friend has hamsters in a sort of hamster city that seems to have millions of tunnels and bits you can buy.

both are smaller than a horse.

This is me, but I hesitate to recommend it as no AFOLS I know have the willpower to stick with just one range…

11Hawkins · 22/06/2022 11:10

Crafting.

Or collect cleaning items. Hoovers, mops (I have 3!), dusters, cleaning products become the next Mrs hinch. Just without the ridiculous bragging.

ScattyHattie · 22/06/2022 11:16

😆franklin mint buttplugs!

A greyhound so can start a fancy collar & coat collection (plus other assorted crap) add more greyhounds as come in wide variety of colours, join the owner cult and meet up for mass walks and events where can show off your fancy hound.

Art/Crafting is good especially as can easily start on one medium then move into others to have range of collections, like colour pencil, pastels, acrylic, oil paint, watercolour, silk & glass painting.

I was also wondering if maybe neurodivergent, with Autism collecting and lining up toys by type/size in early years is an assessment question and then move more into special interests as age. Adhd is similar but tend to cycle though interests more quickly and may never use all the stuff they bought for hobbies.

Nobheadex · 22/06/2022 11:20

Lego makes grown ups odd though. My lovely mild mannered friend is secretly into really complex Lego and I touched a bit once and the look he gave me, chilled me to the bone.

Get a cat.

The amount of differing wet foods and dry foods and tinned fish foods is frightening.

Add collars, blankets, beds, cat trees, toys of various forms and size....well, let's just say you might need to move house 😂

Nobheadex · 22/06/2022 11:21

All my kids are neurodivergent and I’m fairly sure I have inattentive ADD which I manage with industrial quantities of caffeine.

One of my phases was astrology, which I revisit from time to time. That was mostly just books though. And almanacs.

I’ve got a dog. She calms me down but she doesn’t appreciate her accessories. Chews them or shags them.

Aquarium? Then you get the right tank, fish, shrimp, snails, plants, gravel, different lights, aerator, filter, different tools for trimming the plants etc? Plus they're pretty :)

I’m crushed.

OompaLoompaa · 22/06/2022 11:24

A dolls house, you can literally buy everything in mini for it.
I have a replica of my own house and love buying stuff for it.

TheSpottedZebra · 22/06/2022 11:26

Interesting. Do you need it to be limited, ie the joy is in completing the set, or do you want unlimited expansion possibility?
