I did it! I threw away all of the 'emergency knickers'

I feel strangely liberated and bereft.

Yes they had holes and the elastic was going - but in their better days they saw me through my dc's teens and a divorce - only for me to reject them now, after moving to a shiny new (downsized) house with less storage.

So should I buy a few more packs of sloggis as my new "best knickers" and move the best ones down the pecking order? Or is that defeating the object of rationalising the collection due to less space?

Well done!

Did you ever need to dip into the emergency ones or have you enough?

WouldBeGood · 21/06/2022 09:03

Well done @DingleTheDragon ! 😃

TheCanyon · 21/06/2022 09:30

I binned all the pants that don't fit me perfectly. Roughly 6 weeks later I've still not replaced them so only got about 5 pairs left, I'm bloody fed up of them now too but I can't find any pants I fancy.

I did the same thing a few weeks ago. Only kept decent undies. And socks, I was totally ruthless. Binned loads.

Now to work on my cupboards. I do not need 18 tee shirts plus a dozen or so smarter tops! 😳

Charlavail · 21/06/2022 09:59

I did the same a few weeks ago. But also throw away my dinky little bras and sexy knickers I'll never fit into again. Well done @DingleTheDragon and treat yourself to some sloggis

DingleTheDragon · 21/06/2022 10:00

OMG 😱@Ooglymoogly the sock drawer. That has to be next doesn't it?

And to answer the qu up thread - yes I did sometimes end up using them and I now have 15 pairs of knickers left. Which admittedly seems a lot - but I live alone and a white clothes wash takes a while to build up - if I throw knickers in with the sheets etc they always migrate to a ball in the inside corner of the duvet cover 😡 even when I fasten up the cover. Sly buggers.

How many pairs do you have left?
If you have less than 14 pairs, then I would definitely buy some new ones.

What's your usual style?

I discovered Fat Face knickers about a year ago... they're pretty and comfortable!

KangFang · 21/06/2022 10:02

Crosspost.
I would buy a few more pairs.

Hallyup89 · 21/06/2022 10:02

Why you think anyone wants to know about your knicker drawer is beyond me. Very weird.

thereisonlyoneofme · 21/06/2022 10:06

Well you obviously do Hally otherwise why open the thread

Joyfulflowers · 21/06/2022 10:06

Ah well, @Hallyup89 , you absolutely do not need to read the thread much less comment if this is something that doesn't interest you.

Nothing like a good clear out of the underwear & sock drawers. Ive recently done mine and purchased 2 of those sock organiser thingies. One for knickers & one for socks. I now have pristine drawers!

velvetvixen · 21/06/2022 10:18

I'm clearing my knicker drawer this week and splurging. I want 20 good ones so have 10 more to get!
It'll be so nice to open the drawer and see bright new, cheerful knix to choose from. I'm old and single so don't need sexy - just happy! 😀

tulips27 · 21/06/2022 10:25

I've still got bras from when I was skinny and a B-cup. Even if I were to miraculously afford a reduction, it would likely be to a C-cup so I don't know what my logic is! Well done you, anyway.

I usually wash them on hot wash and then move to the next stage of life: under sink bag with cloths. So if I need to wipe something smelly/ sticky or similar I use old socks or knickers and then throw them away.

TheFlis12345 · 21/06/2022 10:36

@DingleTheDragon You need a mesh laundry bag. They only cost a couple of quid, you put them all in that and then they can’t hide in the duvet cover.

Irishfarmer · 21/06/2022 10:38

I done that a while ago, any lose elastic, tiny hole = bin. I am down to about 15 very pretty ones now. DH complains that his boxers go missing too..... I did buy a multi pack of black knickers 2 sizes up I was told these are needed for after my baby is born.

Although socks, I have an issue, the drawer was bursting I went through it and binned a fair few but now have a reusable bag full of them in the wardrobe for when the ones in the drawer wear out. There was absolutely nothing wrong with them so I couldn't justify binning them I just need to not buy socks for 2 years!

Sparklingbrook · 21/06/2022 10:47

Never save anything for best.
I got measured for bras yesterday and bought two new ones to start with. Then getting dressed this morning reached for the old one. Then had a word with myself and put a new one on. 😂

Don't get your knickers in a twist.

TitInATrance · 21/06/2022 10:53

Struggling to get rid of emergency knickers and socks because once I’ve washed them it seems a shame not to get one more wear out of them, so I wear them and then forget to bin them.

LuckyAmy1986 · 21/06/2022 10:56

Can you put old underwear in the textiles bit at the tip?

LuckyAmy1986 · 21/06/2022 10:57

Great idea. You can also put socks on your hands to dust stuff.

CheltenhamLady · 21/06/2022 11:01

Not knickers, but the most liberating thing of that kind I have ever done was to bin every sock belonging to the 5 males in our house. I then went to Matalan and bought 60 pairs of plain black socks and 60 pairs of plain white sports socks.

They go in a central place and are used by all.

No more odd socks, no more pairing socks. Life-changing.

Now this is why I only had black socks for years - when the dc were at school. So now I have a drawer full of emergency use black odd socks (never bought a huge batch of the same all at once - that's genius).

Now that I live alone I have invested in NICE socks, which never get "borrowed" and, touch wood, have remained in pairs. Apparently the magical sock thief that lost my socks disappeared once I lived alone 🤷‍♀️
