I did it! I threw away all of the 'emergency knickers'

I feel strangely liberated and bereft.

Yes they had holes and the elastic was going - but in their better days they saw me through my dc's teens and a divorce - only for me to reject them now, after moving to a shiny new (downsized) house with less storage.

So should I buy a few more packs of sloggis as my new "best knickers" and move the best ones down the pecking order? Or is that defeating the object of rationalising the collection due to less space?

Holiday pants ! I save mine and then take away and then chuck.

@tulips27

The Scottish charity https://www.smallsforall.orgg* would be very grateful for your bras in a range of sizes.

I clear all the ones I had been saving incase I ever lost the weight and fitted them again and feel great about it.

I binned all the pants that don't fit me perfectly. Roughly 6 weeks later I've still not replaced them so only got about 5 pairs left, I'm bloody fed up of them now too but I can't find any pants I fancy.

this is hilarious.

This could be the start of an ongoing mission to rid your house of 'emergency' clutter stuff.

I did it just before I moved. Started with the knicker, bra and sock drawers like you and moved onto the 'spare/emergency' bed linen, towels, tea towels, mugs, cutlery and so on.

It was cathartic and energising. I was able to move and set up in my new home with just the 'best' versions of everything, which I really appreciate.

I now follow a 'one in, one out' rule on possessions too, so an emergency/spare collection doesn't start to accumulate.

I did my sock drawer last year.

16 pairs of bamboo normal socks.
6 pairs of trainer socks
10 pairs of light walking socks
6 pairs of heavy walking socks

(in a different drawer)
4 pairs of running socks
4 pairs of yoga socks

its still a lot of socks now I think about it Hmm

All of my too small knickers are in the spare room and I only have nice new ones that fit in my drawers. It's definitely simplified life in the mornings. Disadvantage being that when I lose the babyweight I'll be back in grotty old ones!

I also bought a pack of new socks which illustrated how totally threadbare my old socks were- so bought a second pack and put the threadbare ones in the spare room. I'm sure they will come in handy . . .

CaptainMyCaptain · 21/06/2022 13:51

Well done OP. I keep tryi g to do it but failing to be really ruthless.

tulips27 · 21/06/2022 13:52

@FinallyHere Thanks, I'll check it out. The idea of them going to landfill put me off so the idea of them being used instead might motivate me.

But then the whole special laundry bag ends up hiding in your duvet cover….

Duvet covers are the laundry equivalent of black holes. Even if you leave out other washing and only put a couple of duvet covers in together - the strongest will swallow up the weakest like two battling galaxies……

Being a bloke I need help with this. What the hell are "emergency knickers"? Stuff you keep for the likes of the relief of Mafeking? What's that about?

I'm a woman and have no idea what emergency knickers are, never heard it before.

user1471538283 · 21/06/2022 16:43

Sometimes you've just got to do it. Any knickers that are past their best or are tiny wisps of something go in my house. I am far too old to entertain thongs anymore or holey knickers. The same with holey socks.

We've done our time making do or being sexy for men ladies!

eatsleepswimdive · 21/06/2022 16:51

A few months ago I got rid of all my knickers and replaced them only with black and nude ones. Life changing.

UndertheEagle · 21/06/2022 17:00

I've just got rid of 6 pairs of emergency leggings. I never wear leggings. I have no idea what emergency would necessitate 6 pairs of varying sizes of black leggings, but I have been prepared for many years.
I am now going to have to face such emergencies legging less. Wish me luck.

SBAM · 21/06/2022 17:14

I need you all to be my wardrobe gurus. I tried to declutter recently, yet I somehow still have multiple black and grey blouses and blazers, despite having given up work to be a SAHM a year ago. I didn’t like wearing them when I did work, black washes me out and they’re invariably sweaty polyester so why have I kept them!

I did this and then got so bored of them I went and bought some patterned ones.

Tumbleweed101 · 21/06/2022 18:55

Last summer I collected all the socks together, some from when my children were much younger. Had a bin bag full. Got rid and replaced with nice new ones for us all. Now we have no random socks hanging about and much more space!

ooh brave to ditch the emergency leggings (I might have a "few" of those myself) what if we have an arctic winter and you need multiple layers?
