Kitchen and bathroom-every year
Bedrooms-every 2-4 years usually when we redecorate everything, get new furniture etc.
Living room and downstairs rooms- as and when needed- usually when DD gets pen on the walls/usual heavy traffic marks in hallways etc

Mybeautifulfriend22 · 20/06/2022 21:04

missing the point of the thread but people change their furniture every 2-4 years?

We’ve been here 5 years and painted downstairs through lockdown. That’s as far as we’ve gotten. Bathroom new though and fully tiled. Kitchen needs a refresh as does the white woodwork in the landing/hallways but post lockdowns life is too busy!

mast0650 · 20/06/2022 21:07

Ummm rarely. We've been in this house almost 17 years. Most rooms have only been painted/wallpapered once. None more than twice. It would cost a fortune! It's a pretty big house.

We do outside woodwork slightly more often.

PaddleBoardingMomma · 20/06/2022 21:10

I can only imagine you're buying cheap flat pack if you're replacing it every few years 🤷🏼‍♀️

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 20/06/2022 21:12

You get all new furniture every 2-4 years?
I've decorated once in the 13 years I've been here. The kitchen could do with a paint it's shabby at 5yo.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 20/06/2022 21:13

Been in this house 5 years and every room has been done once. Kitchen twice but that was only because the first colour was too bright.

Gloss work has been touched up twice

funder · 20/06/2022 21:14

Needs doing after 8 - we stretch to 10 years.

Though we do paint the whole house in white silk emulsion so it wipes clean easily, doesn't get scuffed up and you don't get bored of the colour 😅

lugeforlife · 20/06/2022 21:15

We moved in 9 years ago. Redecorated throughout then. Since then did 3 of the 4 bedrooms but mostly because the kids moved into separate rooms.

Hall/stairs/landing once

Redoing bathroom now. Next is our bedroom (this year). Downstairs (one huge dinning room/living room) and hall/stairs/landing next year. Kitchen was new when we moved in as was downstairs loo so probably year after for those.

We are getting new furniture for bedroom and living room/dining room as we bought cheap end ikea when we moved in. It's lived through the toddler/primary years so needs upgrading. There is only so much a Billy bookcase can take! Also we hate our bed with a passion.

You beat me to it!

Threetulips · 20/06/2022 21:15

Kids rooms have been done twice in 10 years, hall once a year - heavy on sticky hands and marks.

Kitchen dinner every two/three as it looks grubby.

Bathrooms need doing over the summer living room done last year.

So depends! If I get time or board of the colour.

biggreenhouse · 20/06/2022 21:16

They start to look ready for it after about 4 years.

Daisy62 · 20/06/2022 21:18

About every 10 years.

RuthW · 20/06/2022 21:19

8-10 years.

Furniture about every 20 years.

Afterfire · 20/06/2022 21:20

About every 5 years ish.

purpledagger · 20/06/2022 21:32

Every 4-6 years. We've been slowly renovating our home, so the painting has normally been as a result of something else (eg building works) as opposed to just decorating.

yikesanotherbooboo · 20/06/2022 21:34

No changes of furniture, a chair is a chair.
We have lived here for 26 years.
It was newly decorated when we moved in.
We have decorated most rooms and the hall and landing twice, low footfall rooms once.

notgreatthanks · 20/06/2022 21:39

I would say there's a class divide here 😂 we have lived in our house 9 years. Childrens rooms , kitchen , hall and upstairs bathroom have been done twice each. Our room, en suite and living room are once each.

Dinoteeth · 20/06/2022 21:44

The downstairs every 5/6 years upstairs about 10 although I'd sometimes like to do it more often I can't be bothered with the hassle.

Can't imagine replacing furniture so often.

mast0650 · 20/06/2022 21:47

Ummm - what's the class divide?

StopIWantToGetOffNow · 20/06/2022 21:53

Lived here 3 yrs.
Lounge twice
Ds twice
Kitchen twice then had a refit, and havent chosen color so its not done since plastering.
Our room papered
Dd once (needs a freshen this yr i think
Hall once. Again needs re doing as color too light, too much use and getting grubby.

Garden fences and walls. Every year.

StarDolphins · 20/06/2022 21:55

I’ll be honest, I just emulsion over the marks every so often!

Duettino · 20/06/2022 22:01

Following with interest. I have a dog that seems to dirty the walls. We have been here 5 years, done it once and it's well over due. Seems excessive though...

I'm not sure what the original poster meant but to be honest (prepares for flaming) I tend to think the class divide in this regard is that if it's done cheaply, it's done often, and maybe doesn't look the best. Those with more money who have great materials and a better job don't need to do it every couple of years because it was done well / properly the first time 👀

Allthegoodusernamesareused · 20/06/2022 22:08

Have lived in thos house 7 years. Decorated kids rooms when we moved in, and both have been done in the last year or so too.
Kitchen was replaced 18 months ago, and was painted then. Probably won't be done again for a couple of years.
Bathroom was replaced 2 years ago, and painted then, will probably need another coat this summer.
Landing desperately needs doing but due to high ceiling we really need to get someone in and we can't afford it...
Our bedroom and the living room haven't been done. Who knows when that might happen...

Babdoc · 20/06/2022 22:09

I dislike inhaling toxic chemicals, so I paint very rarely. My bedroom hasn’t been painted for about 28 years, and the furniture is antique Victorian, which I doubt I would ever replace with modern flatpack stuff! It has sentimental value to me, as it was here when my DH was alive, 30 years ago.
I did have a new kitchen after 25 years, and replaced a couple of bathrooms that were 47 years old. I think the sitting room was painted about 20 years ago, which is about how old the sofa is!
