Moved in 5 years ago. Only had some rooms redone this year to smarten up for going on the market. Otherwise if we were staying in this house I'd prob have done it in 2 years time

TheChosenTwo · 20/06/2022 22:12

Every couple of years pretty much. We renovated the whole house in stages so the redecorating gets done in stages too.
Nothing drastic, generally just gets redone in the same colours unless the dc are changing bedrooms or whatever.
Our house takes a battering, 5 of us here and always people in and out, us and extras!
We absolutely don’t get new furniture though, we spent a lot on it and expect it to last us decades. It’s not ‘trendy’, it’s all quite plain but solidly built out of quality materials.

bloodyunicorns · 20/06/2022 22:13

We've lived here 14 years. Repainted and papered entire house when we moved in. Since then we have repainted the downstairs loo again, the main bathroom again, and the hall twice, and we have done the kids' rooms a couple of times as their tastes changed as they grew. But the rest of the house is still looking good - and we still like the colours!!

Summerwhereareyou · 20/06/2022 22:21

14 year downstairs.
Hoping to do it all again soon.
DC rooms have had touch ups only.
Again hoping to do them this summer.

Summerwhereareyou · 20/06/2022 22:22

I enjoyed my DC scribes on the walls😂 and was on no hurry to paint over. It will be sad to seem them go!

ChuckBerrysBoots · 20/06/2022 22:26

lived here 10 years - haven’t managed to redecorate it all since having it rewired back then. Whole place needs replastering. Just never seem to have the spare money! 2/3 of it has been redecorated but all feels
a bit unfinished. Despise decorating, wish we could afford to outsource the lot.

FreezyFreezy · 20/06/2022 22:29

Lived here 9 years. We've painted 3 rooms, once. The rest is how we found it.

Orangesox · 20/06/2022 22:31

Errr, we’ve been in our current house 7 years, it’s not been done at all since the builder handed over the keys aside from touching up the odd hole in the wall from moving sockets or the water mark left in the ceiling from a leaky bathroom tap 😂new furniture as and when things are
no longer useful - just replaced two massive corner desks (purchased circa 2001ish) with rectangle desks as they were taking up valuable floor space, spent good money on a sit stand desk for myself that will remain until it’s no longer serviceable.

My office will probably be decorated this year as I will be building and installing custom shelves… easier to decorate whilst all the furniture is out of there. Maybe the bedroom might gain a slightly wild mural if I can be bothered. Nothing looks shabby or in need of replacement/refresh though.

justasking111 · 20/06/2022 22:34

Dogs greasy marking wipe down until paint wears thin then repaint touch up . Our kitchen needs doing we tend to do these jobs in the autumn

Ragwort · 20/06/2022 22:35

Been here 11 years, three rooms (2 bedrooms and study) still the same magnolia as when we moved in ... other rooms plus hall, stair & landings (three stories) have been repainted (once). Now DH has retired I am hoping he might be persuaded to do some more decorating Grin. Absolutely no new furniture- still have the same two cheap sofas we got from MFI over 20 years when DS was born, thinking they would do whilst he was a toddler .. he's now 21 Grin.

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 20/06/2022 23:24

We don't change all the furniture every 2-4 years but on antiquing trips we often replace or find new furniture we like which often turns into a slight redo of the room... No flat pack or cheap wasteful shite here!

Caminante · 20/06/2022 23:25

Very very infrequently 😂

HorribleHerstory · 20/06/2022 23:44

Quite often tbh, seems relentless.
been in this house eight years.

Kitchens been done three times in the eight years.
bathroom 1 been done twice and then tiled
bathroom 2 been done three times.
bedroom one four times and replastered

bedroom two once but really really needs doing again
bedroom three three times and replastered
bedroom four once
hall and landing three times
sitting room four times and replastered but needs doing again
dining room three times

utility twice
garage twice

all internal doors have been done more than once

interesting to me, it’s about one room every three months no wonder it feels constant.

didn’t mention the outside painting.

WeAllHaveWings · 21/06/2022 00:13

Lived here 19 years. Most rooms have been painted twice. Box room once.

Fifthtimelucky · 21/06/2022 00:16

We have lived in this house for 22 years.

No room downstairs has been painted more than once except for the kitchen and utility room which we painted soon after we moved in and then did again when we replaced all the units about 10 years ago.

Most of the upstairs has been done once, but the children's bedrooms have been done twice and the study hasn't been done at all!

RoseMartha · 21/06/2022 00:29

Lived here just over 20 months. Not decorated anywhere, although, I need a job doing in the hall and will decorate when that is finally done later in the year.
The lounge needs doing tbh maybe next year.
I also am not keen on my bedroom decor but it is neutral and will have to do for now.

I would say there's a class divide here

Ummm - what's the class divide?

I think it was Alun Johnson who made sarky comments about “the kind of people who had to buy their own furniture” (ie they didn’t inherit heirlooms).

That class divide.

(I bought my own furniture)

FluffMagnet · 21/06/2022 00:38

People are doing well. DH started on the living room about 4 years ago, and it is about half done …

Literally that well off people will (if they chose to) decorate/buy new furniture every couple years. Poor people live with what they have. Not a judgment it's just interesting to see the contrast.

Lightning020 · 21/06/2022 04:19

I live in a modest extended 2 bed house. Ideally one room every year but it is too pricey. I have to pay somebody to do the decorating so about every two years a room gets done.

WhatsInAMolatovMocktail · 21/06/2022 04:26

I’m well-off but we have only painted once since we moved in 8 years ago. Expect to repaint once a decade or so.

I don’t replace decor or furniture for fashion reasons. It is wasteful.

Well off people definitely don't redecorate every couple of years as a rule.

AuntieMarys · 21/06/2022 04:49

We've just decorated the house from top to bottom....10 rooms plus hall, stairs and landing. First time since we moved in 6 years ago...but it was all freshly painted then.
No kids so it wasn't in a bad state

Lovinglife45 · 21/06/2022 05:00

Clearly not as often as some of you! We replace furniture when we have to, have had sofas for almost 20 years. We cover with throws and cushions.

In three years we have painted hallway one kitchen wall once

Bathroom and kitchen are looking tired - no spare £10k to £15k more like £15k to £20k to redo so we have to make do. It does get me down.

JessicaBrassica · 21/06/2022 06:00

Lived here 15yrs
Hall x2living room - still has paint samples on wall from previous owners
Kitchen extended 8y ago. Still not painted properly
Bathroom replaced x1
Our room x1
D's room x2 (once as spare, then again for him)
DD room x1

Quite frankly, I work 50hr weeks and use my 4.5 weeks leave to spend with kids. I don't have time to decorate any more.
