Everything done in the last 5 years since we bought it. But it was last decorated in the 70s by last owners.
Now it’s done, I don’t plan on doing it any more regularly than is needed. I think online I saw before it averages around 5 years for well used areas like hallways, and 10-12 years for rooms like bedrooms

Quite often tbh, seems relentless.
been in this house eight years.

Kitchens been done three times in the eight years.
bathroom 1 been done twice and then tiled
bathroom 2 been done three times.
bedroom one four times and replastered

bedroom two once but really really needs doing again
bedroom three three times and replastered
bedroom four once
hall and landing three times
sitting room four times and replastered but needs doing again
dining room three times

utility twice
garage twice

all internal doors have been done more than once

interesting to me, it’s about one room every three months no wonder it feels constant.

didn’t mention the outside painting.

But WHY??

Literally that well off people will (if they chose to) decorate/buy new furniture every couple years. Poor people live with what they have. Not a judgment it's just interesting to see the contrast.

This isn’t what the poster meant.

On MN I think it tends to be the opposite - those who redecorate frequently are usually the grey/crushed velvet/Mrs Hinch/Instagram lot.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 21/06/2022 06:15

We moved in 10 years ago and the entire house was done then.
it really needs a repaint and the kids rooms definitely need doing.
we recently put in a really lovely conservatory which cost a lot so now the rest of the house looks terrible compared to that.

User46489 · 21/06/2022 06:17

Been here 25 years and decorate when it needs, probably about 10-15 years intervals, we are doing our bedroom this year, it was done about 15 years ago, we will use the same furniture but we need a new bed.

User46489 · 21/06/2022 06:19

I think that some people like decorating, it's similar to buying a new outfit each week, I don't like decorating or buying clothes particularly.

SquigglePigs · 21/06/2022 06:27

Been here almost 5 years. We decorated a few rooms and the hallway the first year, including a nursery. The rest we didn't get to (one needs it but the lounge is fine as is). We're having an extension next year so won't touch downstairs until then. I can't imagine redoing any of the bedrooms we did 3-4 years ago for a good few years yet - they look absolutely great still. The hallway does have a few scuff marks to be fair but I think that's to be expected. Only exception to the bedrooms is when DD moves out of her toddler bed we may take the opportunity before a big bed goes in to repaint. I can't imagine redoing everything every couple of years!

User46489 · 21/06/2022 06:32

Are people that decorate a lot quite minimalist because I'm dreading doing our bedroom because of the moving of the furniture and it's wallpapered as the walls are not very level, the wallpaper costs a fortune, it will probably take about 2 weeks. We are going to sleep in the caravan while we are doing it as bed will go out before we start and all the furniture will be piled in the spare room and clothes laid on bed in there.

Lndnmummy · 21/06/2022 06:42

We did major building works so redecorated then, including new furniture. Since then we've had settling cracks etc so it desperately needs doing again. Lots of grubby little hands too. We will repaint and change some of the carpets. Bathrooms and kitchen were all done 5 years ago and don't need doing. All furniture is staying apart from a new mattress for ds 1 and kitchen chairs (don't by the Eames copy ones from Dwell anyone. They are awful). One of our sofas could do with replacing (bought it before we knew we were having ds 2). It really isn't a baby/toddler sofa and is ruined now. But it was expensive and shipped from Denmark which took 6 months and was such a head ache. The sofa will be staying for the foreseeable.

starzyy · 21/06/2022 06:42

Bedrooms-every 2-4 years usually when we redecorate everything, get new furniture etc.

Redecorate & new furniture every 2-4 years?!

I love interiors & clothes but redocorating is expensive & inconvenient

This sounds about right to me. I can’t imagine decorating every couple of years! I always use colour (hate white walls) which I think lasts longer than white. My mums place is all white and it doesn’t take long for it to look grubby.

I’m in my 50s and and don’t really intend replacing much furniture now in my lifetime! I don’t buy for fashion, I buy things I love and want to keep. I had a pine dresser I loved but it was looking dated, so I just painted it and put on new handles and it looks totally different.

I do think some people get too caught up in “trends” and wanting to impress.

I would say there's a class divide here

Ummm - what's the class divide?

Wasn't it Alan Clark who pointed out "the kind of people who bought their own furniture"

BadAtMaths2 · 21/06/2022 07:20

We’ve just renovated and got decorators in. The walls were shocking as was the paintwork. They’ve done a brilliant job. Don’t intend to do any decorating for at least a decade.

CredibilityProblem · 21/06/2022 07:21

Changechangychange · 21/06/2022 00:33

I think it was Alun Johnson who made sarky comments about “the kind of people who had to buy their own furniture” (ie they didn’t inherit heirlooms).

That class divide.

(I bought my own furniture)

Alan Clark, not Alan Johnson. Rarely mistaken for each other.

JenniferWooley · 21/06/2022 07:27

Moved in 6 years ago & painted white throughout (HA property with garish colours on each wall - the multiple shades of purple in my bedroom took about 6 coats to cover)

Since then each room has been re-done the way I'd like with the exception of the living room which still needs done but I'm looking to move closer to my mum to provide support so probably won't bother with that.

Thanks! knew it was an Alan and couldn’t be bothered checking which was which.

MayDaze · 21/06/2022 08:19

I decorate as needed. Last house was done as I moved in and then each room done once afyer that. I was there 8 years.

Cureeb house is a project so we ere slowly working our way through. I won't be redecorating for a good while once it's done though

My cousin redecorates yearly, its almost a hobby for her!

icebearforpresident · 21/06/2022 08:27

I was in my last house 7 years and decorated the living room twice (baby and toddler years so the walls were grubby) and the rest of the place was done once.

I bought that house from my parents, it was my childhood home, so I know for a fact that some rooms hadn’t been decorated since the 80’s before we bought it.

downtonupton · 21/06/2022 08:30

we have been here 16 years - when we moved in we slapped some 'temporary' paint up - still there in our main bedroom....

front room has been done twice - but because we replaced the fire and it had to be done a second time.

Hall landin etc - I wen mad and stripped all the wood chip and slapped some paint up - but it really needed a replaster so was decorated a second time after that

most other rooms we have just gradually replaced the slapped up white paint from when we moved in.

I have also touched up - over lock down I tidied up and freshened with left over paint - so not redecorating as such but all freshened and looking cleaner

downtonupton · 21/06/2022 08:31

oh and the kids rooms have been done more - they have swapped with each other a couple of times and we have redecorated as part of the swap (just paint though - not new furniture)

easyday · 21/06/2022 08:45

Hallways most often, - I think in my last house I did it twice in 8 years.
Kitchen mostly cupboards/ splash back so not there, bedrooms I don't bother unless looking grubby but they don't tend to.
Living and dining rooms I repainted once in 8 years.
All in the same colours - I was not redecorating in a new scheme.
So childrens bedrooms might be done if they want a new scheme - I think their rooms were done three time in different colours in that 8 year period.

JudgeRindersMinder · 21/06/2022 08:51

Kids bedrooms when they were small, about every 3 years. Other bedrooms 5/6 years, living room/hall/stairs 5/6 years, kitchen about 3 years. Bathrooms-wetwalled floor to ceiling so never!

JudgeRindersMinder · 21/06/2022 08:52

Above was our previous house, moved last year and currently removing woodchip wallpaper 😫with about 40 years of paint on it
