What is your earliest TV memory?

Mine is coming down for a cuddle with my mum (not a regular occurrence) and Emmerdale being on. Derek Pollard was in some kind of restaurant or bistro arguing with a brunette lady. Emmerdale is on quite early so I'm guessing I must have been 3ish as I went to bed and got back up again.

Muffin the Mule?

10.03.1966, small black and white TV set (the ones you had to bang on top regularily to get a proper picture), wedding of princess Beatrix of the Netherlands. DM was sewing something.

My mum used to watch Peyton Place, Coronation Street, Emergency Ward 10, No Hiding Place and Compact.

I can remember seeing odd bits of them as I got a little older but can remember hearing the theme tunes at night when I'd gone to bed.

I've walked 60 miles this week in a pair of Karrimor Tuvalu walking sandals. Maybe not the latest fashion but SOOOO comfortable. Sports Direct have them reduced at £26. Bargain!

Probably the BBC newsreaders in the 1970s! (Richard Baker, Kenneth Kendall and Angela Rippon) My Dad used to watch the news religiously.

Hectors House

And hiding behind the sofa whilst watching Dr Who in black and white. Not scared of the Daleks but the sea monsters.

My memory in general is bad. I remember Mr Ben, also soaps my child minder liken Sons and Daughters and I think flying doctors.

I have clearer memories of the radio which was on Radio 4. I was always an insomniac and I knew at age 5 that if I was listening to Sailing By and the National Anthem it was officially late (just googled- 00.45). I hated sailing by but loved the Radio 4 theme (6am). I don’t know how I was functioning as frequently heard both.

The old VHS advert with the cartoon skeletons, "re-record don't fade away" or something like that

MissMaple82 · 21/06/2022 22:08

And also, Playdays (I think that's what it was called) I have memories of being ill and off school watching it in my mum and dad's bed 😊

What a walk down memory Lane!

Pebble Mill at one I think is my earliest memory, though that's probably just the repetition of hearing it.

I remember being disappointed to have missed Magic Roundabout at 10am as we'd had to go to the shop.

then I remember the man coming to install the colour T.V & Tom & Jerry being on in colour!

im 53, not 93 🤣🤣

wilddreams · 22/06/2022 07:18

@Phos I remember playbox! With the cat and dog puppet and the cat used to draw a picture.

Also, I remember watching Allsorts back in the day when you could go home from school for lunch

plinkplinkfizzer · 22/06/2022 07:40

That's it!!! I knew it was real! Sometimes they'd play with other stuff, I remember them winding up clockwork toys and things.

Phos · 22/06/2022 07:58

@wilddreams Now I know it was playbox and not toybox, I've googled it and found out Keith Chegwin voiced one of the puppets! I think the dog was male?

BurnDownTheDiscoHangTheDJ · 22/06/2022 08:03

The theme tune to ‘In Sickness and in Health’ (sung by Chas and Dave) and my Dad telling me that Warren Mitchell had been “aged-up” with make up.

wilddreams · 22/06/2022 09:40

@Phos yes I think it was Keith chegwin. The cat sounded a bit like Kathy Burke but not sure if it was her. I always wanted to be able to draw like cat! I've got the theme tune in my head now 🤣

Fifthtimelucky · 22/06/2022 09:49

Andy Pandy, Bill and Ben and The Woodentops!

RosesAndHellebores · 22/06/2022 20:36

One that hasn't been mentioned but I loved was Animal Magic - not a first memory but how I loved it.

My Granny letting me watch Dallas and eating toast.

I remember Crown Court as well, but I’ve just looked it up on Wiki and apparently the jury were real members of the public and they filmed two endings depending on which verdict they chose. Actually sounds like quite good TV despite it being as dull as bricks when you were three 😂

I remember all the usuals like Playschool and Playaway with the men wearing huge flared polyester trousers, and Floella Benjamin with her big heart necklace. I’ve just googled her till, and she’s still wearing it. And she has hardly changed at all, lucky cow.

My biggest disappointment was the Pink Panther Show, as the cartoon feline wasn’t the main event and in fact it was a pretty dull comedy detective thing

My Granny letting me watch Dallas and eating toast

I gave up going to Guides as they moved it to Wednesday and I didn’t want to miss Dallas. Presumably my mother didn’t care enough to argue (or she didn’t want to miss it either - it was either pre-video recorders or we couldn’t afford one)

Thats reminded me of the first video recorded thing I ever saw - the Thriller video was being aired for the first time, after midnight and my friends dad recorded it. We went straight round after school to see it 😂

Percy Thrower's 'Gardening Club' on BBC Television (no 1 or 2 in those days) some time in 1957. I remember the men coming in a van and putting the aerial on the chimney stack and then they brought the black and white telly telly in and started 'setting it up'. The screen came alight with a lot of lines and just a buzz on the sound then as the man twiddled a picture came and you could hear a man talking. It was Percy Thrower. My dad still had the set in 1971 but then he forked out for a colour set with BBC2.I'd left home by then.
