What is your earliest TV memory?

Mine is coming down for a cuddle with my mum (not a regular occurrence) and Emmerdale being on. Derek Pollard was in some kind of restaurant or bistro arguing with a brunette lady. Emmerdale is on quite early so I'm guessing I must have been 3ish as I went to bed and got back up again.

'Sit thee down' with the houghton weavers. I was 5 or 6 and loved it. I was allowed to watch it on the sofa under a blanket on a Friday night.

Also when Ray Langton left Deirdre in Corrie. I still remember her sad face as the credits rolled 🙁

Belle and Sebastian (the cartoon, not the band) and the Cities of Gold. For years they were just a vestigial memory and no-one else my age seemed to have watched them. I suspect they were a bit before my time and I was watching them too young or something

Watch with Mother
Picture Book – Mondays, from 1955
Andy Pandy – Tuesdays, from 1950
Flower Pot Men – Wednesdays, from 1952
Rag, Tag and Bobtail – Thursdays, from 1953
The Woodentops – Fridays, from 1955

That's my era too. We loved in a remote place and got a TV in about 1957.

Vaguely remember the Cedar Tree and Crown Court. But the most definitive earliest memory is seeing Sandy Gall announce that Elvis had died on the ITV news at 5.45. I ran into the garage where my dad was working on his workbench and said “Daddy! Daddy! Elvis has died!”
My Dad was a MASSIVE Elvis fan, and he just didn’t believe me.
I took him by the hand and led him into the lounge where he sat and watched the news with his head in his hands, I was 4 and 3 months old.

Weirdly I've just googled it and can see that Belle and Sebastian aired when I was five so I'm guessing PlayDays (or was it Playbus? What was the difference!?) is my actual earliest TV memory.

My earliest TV memory was learning how to open it and nick a couple of 50p 's 😇

I think playbus was the one that had the why bird stop etc, and play days was jiffy jj and Bonzo, and that box that talked!!

The High Chaparral and Z Cars theme tunes. I’m not sure if I was actually allowed to stay up to watch. Circa 1970.

Oh Chocky was scary, then Chockys Children! I was terrified of the Clifton house mystery, no one else remembers it, think it was mid seventies

My mother watching one of the old soaps, late eighties. Door to sitting room shut and baby crying in the pram by the front door, I was three. No specific memories of watching it myself until much older and no clue which was first. Mostly young children's programs my sister liked and I hated, or else videos, Land Before Time, An American Tale etc.

RosesAndHellebores · 20/06/2022 22:09

Another recollection of Watch with Mother here. I think my earliest memory is of Andy Pandy but I also remember Bill and Ben and the Wooden tops. Sooty and Sweep was another favourite. I was also taken to see that at the theatre but was too shy to go on stage when the children were called up. I was another member of the Tinga and Tucker Club and recall the wibbly wobbley way.

I also, sadly, have a resounding memory of watching Aberfan unfold on the news and the picture of the black slag heaps.

eddiemairswife · 20/06/2022 22:10

When TV came back after the war, the 'big girls' over the road asked me if I would like to have a look. I was not impressed; it was in black and white and the screen was very small. I was used to technicolour at the cinema.
