What is your earliest TV memory?

Mine is coming down for a cuddle with my mum (not a regular occurrence) and Emmerdale being on. Derek Pollard was in some kind of restaurant or bistro arguing with a brunette lady. Emmerdale is on quite early so I'm guessing I must have been 3ish as I went to bed and got back up again.

Playschool (loved Brian Cant)
Mary, Mungo and Midge (wanted to live in a tower block)
Hatty Town
Crown Court (mum used to watch it after lunch with a brew as I had a ‘rest’ on the sofa, then we did reading before going to get my older brother from School.

I did enjoy an Australian show with a wombat (Willie the Wombat), koala and kangaroo. I moved away from the Midlands region and nobody had ever heard of it. It was called The Tingha and Tucker Club - does anyone else remember it?

My DH (60 this week), raves about this!!!

Apart from the usual kids TV - Playschool, etc I have a very clear memory of watching snooker with my dad on a black and white portable TV - how we followed the game I have no idea!

Button Moon. Just started half days a nursery circa 1986. Oddly remember eating a battered sausage DM got me for lunch watching it!

airrrrAIRRRRiELLLL · 20/06/2022 21:06

Apart from Watch with Mother during the day, in the early evening there was Muriel Young with Pussycat Willum and Wally Whyton with Ollie Beak and Fred Barker. Anyone else think the animals were real? Grin

PuddleglumtheMarshWiggle · 20/06/2022 21:07

I came on to say Mary, Mungo and Midge!
Then followed by Crown Court, which mum watched. Think this was lunchtime and then later in the afternoon it was The Magic Roundabout.

Pbbananabagel · 20/06/2022 21:07

Playdays and sooty for sure

Tales of the Riverbank and Pogles Wood. There were other programmes for pre-schoolers but those two were my absolute favourites.

My sisters and I would watch snooker on our brother's little black and white tv in the 80s. There must have been absolutely nothing else on 😂

We had a black and white TV well into the 80s as my parents didn't have much money at the time and the TV licence was cheaper.

As well as snooker and knowing which shade of grey was each colour we also loved Treasure Hunt when Annika Rice had to find a pink envelope. It was probably a lot more obvious if you had a colour TV.

A lot of my other early ones have been mentioned already.

We always watched The Krypton Factor as a family and does anyone else remember Greenclaws? I absolutely loved that show but no-one else ever seems to remember it.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 20/06/2022 21:20

Mr Ben

Frazzled2207 · 20/06/2022 21:21

This is easy. Charles and Diana wedding 1981. Until about 10 years ago I’d be really shocked when I realised someone wouldn’t be old enough to remember. Now most people aren’t 😂

Longdistance · 20/06/2022 21:23

I was brought up by the tv. My parents never went to the pub or out dancing, so it was used as our entertainment.
Sons and daughter with mum at home. That’s where my mum learnt to speak English, it was her favourite program.
I used to love watching Mr Ben, finger mouse, bagpus, button moon, Rainbow….

plinkplinkfizzer · 20/06/2022 21:24

That would be about right. I was thinking late 80s but could easily have been early 90s.

MrsElm · 20/06/2022 21:27

The earliest is Princess Anne's wedding in 1973.

After that Playschool, and watching Crossroads with my Mum.

I remember the song! I can't remember the program, but the theme tune is back in my head right now.

Playschool - with Hamble, Humpty Dumpty
Cockleshell bay

RubyDarke · 20/06/2022 21:32

ShirleyJackson · 20/06/2022 20:27

Playschool - let’s look through the arched window.

Rainbow - up above the streets and houses, rainbow flying high…

Painting With Nancy.

The Cedar Tree.

Pebble Mill at One.

Farmhouse Kitchen.

Hartley Hare.

Chorlton and the Wheelies.

I was going to say Mr Trimble and Pipkins (both Hartley Hare) and Rainbow too!

But I had almost forgotten the Cedar Tree - daytime family saga set in 30s and 40s. Randomly, I once went to my gps' wholesaler (they had shops) when I was about 10 and my GF bought me all 3 tie-in Cedar Tree novels, along with some sparkly nail varnish. My parents basically let me read anything.
