Lauren Laverne is too edgy for Eurovision see also Jo Willey!

WeAreTheHeroes · 18/06/2022 22:58

Not sure we're talking about the same ticket: €800 was for both semis, the final and a rehearsal session.

WeAreTheHeroes · 18/06/2022 23:03

I don't think the proximity of the BBC Media City to the ao Arena would be an issue, it's under 5 miles.

Manchester hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2002. Yes, 20 years ago. I was there!

Davros · 18/06/2022 23:22

Lauren Laverne can't be edgy, she's Radio 4 royalty thanks to Desert Island Discs. Can't get more establishment than that

Oh! Who am I think of then

ErrolTheDragon · 18/06/2022 23:35

Why? Hardly central is it, we should be utilising the centre of the country /UK more

Lancashire it is then.Grin
Seriously, it should be the U.K. acting as a venue for the Ukrainians as hosts in exile, as it were.

It's me you quoted and I'm cool with Lancashire 😁😁

Full pricelist. No 800 euro tickets...

WeAreTheHeroes · 19/06/2022 08:22

Well it's what I was told yesterday. If you add the different events together and there are any booking fees, it's not far off. Lots of fans don't travel just to see the grand final.

WeAreTheHeroes · 19/06/2022 08:25

Actually, scrap my above post. If you wanted the best tickets for both semis and the final, it adds up to €850, which is what I was told. Those are tickets to stand in the audience areas closest to the stage.

I was away from my laptop for a bit and I come back to find this gem of a comment from @Topseyt123 -
"The BBC has stepped in occasionally when other broadcasters have been in difficulty over hosting before. I think that happened when Johnny Logan won it several times on the trot for Ireland and the Irish broadcaster was running low on funds to keep hosting"

I mean FFS!!!!

We won the competition (currently) more than any other country in the competition, 3 of those times back to back and we hosted each and every single time Ireland has won. Please toddle off with your UK swept in and helped out our wee little neighboureenoo Ireland when they ran out of money attitude. RTE has hosted very well thank you very much. We gave the world Riverdance during the Eurovision interval. No interval act has come close either before or since.

Your comment is not only ignorant of the facts. Why didn't you think of even checking with the master - Google that is???

The UK may be the "in reserve" host country but you've not won the competition outright to host it as many times as Ireland has.

This is what @Topseyt123 was thinking of:

"Since its debut in 1965, the country has missed only two contests: the 1983 contest in Munich and the 2002 contest in Tallinn. A strike at RTÉ in 1983 meant that the station lacked the resources to send a participant, so RTÉ broadcast the contest with the BBC commentary feed."

They simply misremembered a bit as it wasn't related to hosting they needed help with. The BBC did help out RTÉ on this occasion by permitting them to use BBC commentary.

I know because I was there.

Choosing to pay for the fan club tickets by the stage does not equal the whole event being that price.

(You don't need to argue back again with your hearsay vs my evidence, you know! I would hate for someone not to even look into it because they thought they could never afford a ticket.)

sashh · 19/06/2022 10:49

Timur Miroshnychenko has to host. He has done it before and broadcast this year from a bunker.

dazzlingdeborahrose · 19/06/2022 11:28

I think it has to be either Manchester or London. The former because it was the first place that a Ukrainian immigrant is recorded. The latter because London has the largest percentage of Ukrainians in the UK. The UK may have been asked to host but should be inviting Ukrainian presenters to host. This is Ukraine's moment, a celebration of their win and the competition needs to reflect that. The UK is just offering a safe venue and financial support. God knows Ukraine needs it's joyful moment in the sunlight. Let's not take it from them.

LookItsMeAgain · 19/06/2022 11:32

@DownNative ...when I read that it reads as though RTE broadcast the Eurovision on RTE but instead of us sending Marty Whelan to commentate, they actually showed the BBC coverage, with Terry Wogan as the commentator.

"Since its debut in 1965, the country has missed only two contests: the 1983 contest in Munich and the 2002 contest in Tallinn. A strike at RTÉ in 1983 meant that the station lacked the resources to send a participant, so RTÉ broadcast the contest with the BBC commentary feed"

Again, this is very different to what @Topseyt123 was alluding to or saying straight out in their post.

Kind of like what RTE does when it shows the same episode of EastEnders on RTE that is being shown at the same time on the BBC but with the BBC commentator doing the audio description.
This is what I get when I search for "Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest" and Wikipedia has this in the article:
"Ireland did not participate in the 1983 edition in Germany, nor did they send a commentator to Munich that year, but instead broadcast the BBC feed of the contest with Terry Wogan as commentator, who welcomed viewers in Ireland during his introduction. RTÉ Radio, however, did provide commentary by Brendan Balfe."
So we didn't enter in 1983 (so no requirement to 'host' on our behalf) and we took the feed from the BBC instead with Terry as the commentator...again, not 'hosting'. If we spoke French or German or Spanish or Italian as well as we speak English, we could just as easily have taken the feed from their national broadcaster instead.

If you add up those ticket prices they equal €850 so you may well have been there, but that doesn't mean you can add up.

Fingers crossed for Huw Edwards.
