My money's on Dermot to present. I'd love to see someone like Ellie Taylor presenting. She's great fun.

I think Rylan would be out tbh. I'm not sure the other nations would be able to understand his accent...

MinglingFlamingo · 17/06/2022 22:19

WeAreTheHeros how did I not know that Mäns lives in the UK ??? 😲😲😲 (love your username btw )

EdgeOfACoin · 17/06/2022 23:02

A world city is actually a 'thing':

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_city

London is definitely considered to be one. I'm not sure other UK cities are. Maybe Edinburgh.

Stroopwaffels · 17/06/2022 23:17

As a Weegie who lives about 4 miles from the Hydro I am SOOOOO excited about this.

Glasgow puts on these events really well. Cop26 in 2021. Commonwealth Games 2014, European Championships 2018. Hydro is an amazing venue and it featured in the Eurovision Fire Saga movie thing so it's a done deal as far as I'm concerned.

Plus Nicola Sturgeon is going to hate everyone waving their wee Union flags and supporting the United Kingdom. Bonus.

Clearly not been to the North of late then I see...

Seriously, there are numerous European cities which have hosted Eurovision which wouldn't maybe you wouldn't count as 'world cities'... I mean Rotterdam doesnt have a stock exchange. Neither does Turin. Malmo? Its been hosted in Brighton and Harrogate too.

Indeed:

Characteristics
Although criteria are variable and fluid, typical characteristics of world cities include:[9]

The most prominent criterion has been providing a variety of international financial services,[10] notably in finance, insurance, real estate, banking, accountancy, and marketing; and their amalgamation of financial headquarters, a stock exchange, and other major financial institutions.
Headquarters of numerous multinational corporations.
Domination of the trade and economy of a large surrounding area
Major manufacturing centres with port and container facilities
Considerable decision-making power on a daily basis and at a global level
Centres of new ideas and innovation in business, economics, and culture.
Centres of digital and other media and communications for global networks
Dominance of the national region with great international significance
High percentage of residents employed in the services sector and information sector
High-quality educational institutions, including renowned universities and research facilities; and attracting international student attendance[11]
Multi-functional infrastructure offering some of the best legal, medical, and entertainment facilities in the country
High diversity in language, culture, religion, and ideologies

Manchester and Leeds are definitely up there every bit as much as Malmo and Rotterdam. The tech boom in Manchester is huge. Youve got the media shift out of London that now makes them significantly more influential on a global level. There masses of financial and legal services in both, again a lot down to a move out of London for costs. Manchester has a huge port facility (yes really. That thing called the ship canal shifts a crap load of goods up it even in 2022). Birmingham has quite a lot going for it these days too, strangely enough. Commonwealth Games this year anyone? (oh yeah what year did Manchester do that?) Is football not quite an important industry?

If you want to go by the strictest definition of what a global city is, you probably are only going to be including London, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin and maybe Madrid. That means most of the rest of the Eurovision countries shouldn't even bother. Including Italy who is one of the big 5!

There is nothing stopping a city outside the capital hosting Eurovision. A number of British cities have the ability and the infrastructure to do it. They aren't some sort of backwater. Many are bigger and more advanced than cities who have hosted it elsewhere in Europe in the last 20 years.

This utterly ignorant backward attitude to anywhere outside London needs slapping down wherever its seen. Its not ok.

Ireland held it in a small town in 1993. It doesn't have to be a city.

thecatsthecats · 18/06/2022 11:51

We were in Turin this year, and you couldn't move around the venue for crew members bitching about how the Italians were running the whole thing. In a safe, peaceful country which had great infrastructure.

You need to be able to host forty different production crews, even if you aren't hosting visitors.

I would LOVE to see Zelensky host it in the UK. And Edinburgh is twinned with Kyiv...

That was in Millstreet in a converted horse barn or something wasn't it?
That, too, was before the days of needing to have two semi-finals and a final though so the numbers of countries coming to stay in Ireland wasn't as many as there are now.

That said, I think Belfast would be a fantastic location. Would also instil the belief in so many that the UK hasn't forgotten about the 6 counties and I'm sure there could be some arrangement made to allow competing countries stay in hotels in and around the neighbouring counties in the Rep of Ireland too. Great for cross border relationships.

MinglingFlamingo · 18/06/2022 13:36

Had another thought about presenters. What about Rochelle and Marvin Humes. JLs and The Saturdays would have been known bands in Europe, they are good on that guess the song show.

Also if it's held in Glasgow perhaps a Scottish presenter. John Barrowman perhaps

Stroopwaffels · 18/06/2022 13:56

John Barrowman is blacklisted over previous behaviour. (As well as being an embarrassment to Scotland).

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Eurovision_Song_Contest_host_cities

When UK has hosted, the venues have been:

  • 1960. London, Royal Festival Hall
  • 1963. London, BBC TV Centre
  • 1968. London, Royal Albert Hall
  • 1972. Edinburgh, Usher Hall
  • 1974. Brighton, Brighton Dome
  • 1977. London, Wembley Conference Centre
  • 1982. Harrogate, Harrogate International Centre
  • 1998. Birmingham, National Indoor Arena
I think it might be time for Wales to have a turn?

Cardiff has hosted a Champions League final so it shouldn’t be beyond us.

SpinningRoundRightRound · 18/06/2022 14:34

Professor Brian Cox could get the band back together. The lead singer Peter Cunnah is from Derry, I believe. <D:reams a little.> A bit of Orla McCool on the old dancing there, the link-ups with Kyiv throughout, and I'd be happy if they held it in a school hall.

Davros · 18/06/2022 15:09

I vote Clara Anfo too or Lauren Laverne. With... dunno

I found out today the Turin arena charged over €800 for the main events ticket and had the gall to sell audio only tickets!

WeAreTheHeroes · 18/06/2022 18:35

The BBC's Eurovision team is based at Media City, Salford. I don't think from the conversation today that there have been any venue decisions.

Hippopotas · 18/06/2022 19:06

MinglingFlamingo · 17/06/2022 12:51

Of course Mäns is very welcome to come over to present Eurovision any time he wants

I think he lives in the UK anyway

BettyBootsie · 18/06/2022 19:35

Emma Willis is another one I think would be great. Portugal had 4 presenters, so why not Graham, Rylan, Clara and Emma??

Eeesh - that would be my dream of going well and truly out the window if those were the prices for the UK venue!

SwedishEdith · 18/06/2022 19:44

Zoe Ball will be in the ring as host. Really hope it's not Lauren Laverne.

The UK has hosted in Brighton before so absolutely does not need to be in London. Only worry is that Johnson will appear (if still PM) claiming it as something he influenced.

Myworhl · 18/06/2022 19:54

My money’s on William and Catherine
Tate

FluffytheGoldfish · 18/06/2022 21:07

I don't really know the Manchester AO arena and how close it is to the Salford Media centre but BBC Scotland is opposite the Hydro on the other side if the Clyde. There are 2 pedestrian bridges as well as the Squinty Bridge (proper name is the Clye Arc) connecting Pacific Quay and the SEC/Hydro/Armadillo complex so they are literally minutes apart.

Namechangeforthis88 · 18/06/2022 21:36

DH and I conclude if it is here, we will provide a venue and Ukraine will, as far as possible, do the show as their own (the postcards from etc ...). The venue might even be declared Ukrainian territory. I thought there was a precedent set by COP26 being policed by cops from down south but DH thinks I dreamt that.

Not true. The top price tickets for the live Grand Final were €350.

We got tickets for a live semi final and the final jury show for €800 for two of us altogether and then went to a free fan zone for the live show. And drinks were reasonably priced.
