I'm trying to come up with songs and instrumentals for a CD compilation (yes, I still make these!). So far, I've come up with:

Stomp! Brothers Johnson
Play That Funky Music Wild Cherry
Spanish Hustle Fatback Band
Ain't No Stopping Us Now McFadden and Whitehead
September Earth, Wind and Fire
Soul City Walk Archie Bell and The Drells
Pick Up The Pieces Average White Band

Any suggestions please?

I adore pretty much every song mentioned here! I've found my people!

Tell me - what do you think is the best love song in this genre? That communicates without words?

Luckingfovely · 06/06/2022 23:19

*and also, has nobody made a Spotify playlist yet? If not, I will!

So many stellar tuuuunes already mentioned... I'll add:

Betcha Wouldn't Hurt Me (extended version, of course!) - Quincy Jones
Summer Madness- Kool and the Gang
Between the Sheets- Isley Brothers
Searching- Roy Ayers
I Wanna Be Your Lover- Prince
Pumpin' It Up- P Funk All Stars
Playa Playa- D'angelo

TheVanguardSix · 06/06/2022 23:51

Also...

I am the Black Gold of the Sun- Nuyorican Soul's version featuring Jocelyn Brown or you could go with the original by Rotary Connection

BlueTitSmilingAtMe · 06/06/2022 23:59

I would love a playlist! So many fine tunes.

Re the best love song, I dunno if it counts as a love song but to my mind Stevie Wonder's Lately is one of the best ballads ever written. He packs so much into a few minutes, really uses his changes well to give full emotional resonance. I mean it's crafted like opera, just incredible.

Blackberrycream · 07/06/2022 00:16

These were the first couple I thought of straight away.
I’m adding
Al Green, Love and Happiness
Gold in the Shade, Shining Through

mscynical · 07/06/2022 01:48

Bobby Womack - Across 110th Street
Tower of Power - There is Only So Much Oil in the Ground
Manu Dibango - Big Blow

@Luckingfovely
The Steve Khan instrumental version of the O'Jays 'Darlin' Darlin' Baby' is fab and was a hit in the 70's at jazz/funk clubs.
Another lovely instrumental by Curtis Mayfield - Think. I adore Curtis 😍

Running up that hill by Kate Bush

CockSpadget · 07/06/2022 03:34

Class track!

WildRosie · 07/06/2022 05:29

Could well be enough music to choose from here to do a couple of discs, assuming I get round to it. Thankyou all.

I don't know about without words but the live version of Donny Hathaway's 'A song for you' (think it's on the album 'In Performance or Live in Performance or something like that) is absolutely beautiful.

ShirleyJackson · 07/06/2022 10:44

Atomic Dog - George Clinton

ShirleyJackson · 07/06/2022 10:45

Oops, x-post.

bootsyjam · 07/06/2022 10:47

I forgot to add the much under estimated Bill Withers. His first two albums are funky as he'll.
So 'Kissing My Love', Sweet Wainomi, Better off Dead. To be honest practically all the songs on the first two albums are brilliant. His Live at Madison Square Gardens album is also one of the best soul/funk albums I've heard.

And finally Charles Wright and the 108th watt St band-Express Yourself, What can you bring me, One Lie leads to another.

Their greatest hits album is well wortha listen as lots of different styles on there and some magical and unheard tunes!

EightiesHairdo · 07/06/2022 11:25

Too many to list but here are a few:

Joy - Teddy Pendergrass
Stop to love - Luther Vandross
Can I - Cashmere
Thinking about your love - Skipworth & Turner
Single life - Cameo
Why you get funky on me - Today
I like - Guy
In my house - Mary Jane Girls
Take me with u - Prince
Smile - Sister Sledge
Hanging on a string - Loose Ends
Get yourself together - Young Disciples

Great thread!
