I'm trying to come up with songs and instrumentals for a CD compilation (yes, I still make these!). So far, I've come up with:

Stomp! Brothers Johnson
Play That Funky Music Wild Cherry
Spanish Hustle Fatback Band
Ain't No Stopping Us Now McFadden and Whitehead
September Earth, Wind and Fire
Soul City Walk Archie Bell and The Drells
Pick Up The Pieces Average White Band

Any suggestions please?

Some good songs sleazy suggested. Some more below.

We've got the Funk - Positive Force
Just be good to me - SOS Band
Working up a sweat - Full Circle
Circles - Atlantic Start
Somebody else's guy - Jocelyn Brown
I didn't mean to turn you on - Cherelle

Sleazy = already!

WildRosie · 06/06/2022 10:03

Lady Marmalade - good one.

Some more British funk needed so I'll add Boogie Nights by Heatwave and Southern Freeze by Freeez.

For more laid back stuff, I'll add Free by Deniece Williams, Where Is The Love by Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway and Midnight At The Oasis by Maria Muldaur.

Freeze by Southern freeze is my favourite 😊

Loose ends "hanging on a string" and "gonna make you mine"

Prince "I feel for you"

LetsGoCrazyPurpleBanana · 06/06/2022 10:47

Heatwave "The groove line"

LetsGoCrazyPurpleBanana · 06/06/2022 10:49

Alexander O'Neal "All true man" and "what can I say to make you love me"

Mica Paris "like dreamers do"

Some great suggestions - you were obviously into northern soul, I was more of a jazz funker growing up in the SE 😎

hellswelshy · 06/06/2022 11:02

Ah great suggestions! Was going to add I believe in miracles by The Jackson sister's but someone already has, excellent choice.

I don't think I mentioned Machine Gun by The Commodores. Must have it. Also,
Get Up And Boogie by Silver Convention and Funky Town by Lipps Inc.

So many!

Northernsoullover · 06/06/2022 20:15

The originals - suspicion is another corker.

mscynical · 06/06/2022 21:08

@valadon68
Thanks for those - some hard core funk there and some I had not heard in a while...
And a couple never before.

AnotherEmma · 06/06/2022 21:23

Whaaat, how has no-one mentioned James Brown yet?! I Got You (Feel Good), Get Up (Sex Machine), Papa's Got a Brand New Bag, etc etc.

Also:
Aretha Franklin, Respect
Ray Charles, I got a woman / hit the road Jack

...as you were!

WildRosie · 06/06/2022 21:32

Until You Come Back To Me by Aretha Franklin is sublime. Stay With Me Baby by Lorraine Ellison is another classic but I don't know if it fits the genre in this thread.
