The country is a shit show - why is there so little mention of Brexit's role?

That's it really.

Surely all our woes can't be placed at the door of covid and war - it is a good political narrative, but is it really true?

I'm amazed how little questioning by the media and public there is about the role of Brexit.

Because acknowledging that Brexit was a dumb idea which has caused nothing but trouble was devised and delivered by powerful people who don’t give a shiny shite about Britain but cared only about their own pockets would cause civil unrest from a population used to being spewed at with the lies and vitriol from this country’s so called newspapers.

We have paid higher wages in the care industry and guess what we still can't find enough staff. £10.50 starting pay as a care worker.
However Brexit hasn't shut the door on non Eu workers so we have sponsored a load of staff from South Africa and Philippines. These workers can only do the higher paid roles though so we still have no kitchen staff or housekeeping.
Lots of local hospitality has closed or only opens a few days a week as they have no staff.
Yes care roles should have been paid more but it still won't entice people to do the role if they don't want to.
We have had to stop admissions on many occasions due to lack of staff as have many Dom Care agencies. Then people wonder why all the beds are full in hospitals. This has never happened previously in my 30 years in the industry.

This appears to be an issue in France too - from link below

Finally, and perhaps most notably, is the shortage of healthcare professionals.

In 2021, 20 percent of hospital beds in France were forced to close because of a lack of staff.

Public hospitals are primarily affected, but the shortage extends into home care and a wider shortage with recruiting nurses and care assistants across the industry.

Recruitment for home-help and domestic care assistants is a particular problem.

Frédérique Bérard, national director of nursing services for the Avec group, which provides home help, explained to Franceinfo that the staff shortage problem has worsened: “It’s gotten worse in recent months, we’re having more and more problems recruiting. The profession is no longer attractive.”

Remainers, Nats and Trumpers. An unholy trinity.

Of course Brexit created a lot of our current issues.

But surely most people with a half a brain can work that out for themselves?

We should not rely on the media to tell us what you to think...

If covid/Brexit have proved anything is that a big part of the media are not to be trusted as they simply will regurgitate the beliefs of their billionaire owners or of the government of the day.

The ballot box is were people have a chance to make their views and feelings count.

I'd love to know what the benefits of brexit have been so far. All we hear of are what brexit hasn't caused. It's blatantly obvious that the mainstream media isn't discussing brexit related problems because we never hear about it. Ever. It's like it never happened. And when problems are mentioned they are invariably attributed to ridiculous causes like the traffic congestion in kent being due to half term holidays.

Nutellanjam · 01/06/2022 09:19

Something that really brought this home to le was driving to Dover this weekend on the m20 for the first time in ages. Apologies if this has been mentioned and am sure many people have seen this regularly but when you hear the words lorry park, they didn’t -for me at least - conjure up what is now the reality. I’d naively imagined some kind of a car park outside Dover !!!
Instead It’s literally miles and miles of queues for lorry drivers. Then when you think it’s finished there’s more, then more, then more. It must be so grim now for them, it must be days waiting to get on a ferry.
i couldn’t help wonder who on earth benefits from this ? Certainly not the drivers. Or the people impacted by the delay. And it’s obviously adding on costs to be absorbed by someone down the line. Is this really brexit in action ?

Odessafile · 01/06/2022 09:21

@MarshaBradyo as a remainer you seem pretty determined to minimise brexit related issues. Weird that...

runningfromreality · 01/06/2022 09:22

The defenders of Brexit on here definitely don’t live in Kent.

Fidodidit · 01/06/2022 09:24

I voted remain but I’ve done a tonne of hospitality work over the years and I think if you want people to work antisocial hours then there should be a significant wage premium for that - it doesn’t matter if it’s not a technically difficult role. My current job doesn’t isn’t a highly paid one but I’m happy I can sit at home in front of a laptop and walk the the dog whenever I like. I could probably get paid a similar amount in hospitality but there is a reason I’m choosing what I currently do over that. Working split shifts as a waiter trashes your whole day.

Don’t be silly

honestly as that the best come back on issues because it’s very weak

No I don’t think the media is hiding anything

I do think the global impact from two major economic shocks is downplayed

I wish Brexit hadn’t happened, Cameron hadn’t promised it and run off after, Cummings hadn’t managed to put together such an effective campaign, I don’t really do the blame the fat thick people that others go for in pp

There are downsides to Brexit but they are not behind everything, as I broke down earlier - you can disagree rather than go for the usual snide comment. How would you break it down?

SME sound like they are hit, lorry parks sound woeful, trade impacted. If I could wave a wand I would. But the worker shortage is not just here.

You must have forgotten about reading ..... endlessly ..... about the trade border issues with Ireland.

3luckystars · 01/06/2022 09:30

It’s awful but the people in change are spinners, and rewrite things.

there is no point blaming anyone for voting for Brexit. They were voting in the dark and were misled, and things were not perfect and it seemed like an alternative.

the main thing is to look ahead now.

it would be great if the leaders were honest and told the truth but that might cause total chaos.

PaddleBoardingMomma · 01/06/2022 10:02

Has no one mentioned yet how unnecessarily difficult the EU have made Brexit as punishment for us leaving 👀 it's like wanting to leave an abusive partner and they just won't let go...

3luckystars · 01/06/2022 10:06

That’s not the case.

cottagegardenflower · 01/06/2022 10:07

Why do you want to exploit low paid workers from Eastern European countries as we did before Brexit?

There is a Brexit area don't you know?

Shmithecat2 · 01/06/2022 10:07

mynameiscalypso · 31/05/2022 21:54

Is it not mentioned? I probably say 'Bloody Brexit' at least twice a week and most people I know blame a whole heap of stuff on it.

This. Are you under a rock OP?

cottagegardenflower · 01/06/2022 10:08

Post brexit we didn't have these issues, post Covid we do.

Shhh, don't come in here with facts you'll upset them!

Forinara · 01/06/2022 10:11

We have to celebrate the fact that they "got it done" forever more without a single word of criticism don't you know?! That once in a generation achievement on par with winning wars, advanced medical breakthroughs.

cottagegardenflower · 01/06/2022 10:08

Post brexit we didn't have these issues, post Covid we do.

Well the UK left the EU on 31st January 2020, just at the start of the Covid pandemic, so post-Brexit and post-Covid are the same thing.

Crikeyalmighty · 01/06/2022 10:14

@ssd I totally agree- Scottish working class are way more switched on and suffer fools far less- I've always thought that. Same in Liverpool

UrsulaPandress · 01/06/2022 10:20

I’ve heard it all now. A better class of working class in Scotland and Liverpool 😂

cottagegardenflower · 01/06/2022 10:21

@artisanbread Don't be so simplistic, covid job losses, business closures and general disruption didn't happen immediately. It's taken 2 years of grinding our economy into the ground.

There was no immediate problem due to brexit, but even brexiteers accepted there would be price increases etc. What no one took into account was a pandemic and a major war in Europe.

cottagegardenflower · 01/06/2022 10:22

These issues are pretty world wide anyway.
