People mispronouncing words!!!

Is it rude to correct someone when they clearly mispronounce a word? 😂

I'm not talking about someone having dyslexia struggling to read a word out loud...

Also I'm SO curious to see if others truly don't know that they're saying the most obvious ones incorrectly e.g saying PACIFIC instead of SPECIFIC the mind boggles!! Or EXPRESSO instead of ESPRESSO

Another one which irks me is incorrectly saying DIAZEPAN instead of DIAZEPAM lol this one is so common...or pronouncing VEGAN as if it has an extra "a" after the "e" like VEAGAN 😂🤦🏼‍♀️

Heard someone pronounce the "ch" in ARCHIVE as ar-chive rather than ar-kive Lol I did not have the heart to correct them!

Any other good ones? Do you lot correct the idiots?!

@bellac11 yes to people who mix wondering and wandering! I thought it was only me who’d noticed that one. Infuriating!

I have another, there is a historian on the telly, hasnt done any programmes for a while but he did one on the Normans and others.

He pronounces known as 'know-en'

Drives me mad

Is he Australian? I've met several who do this. It's regional thing, so not incorrect.

bellac11 · 29/05/2022 22:18

He doesnt sound Australian, I will look him up

bellac11 · 29/05/2022 22:20

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Bartlett_(historian)

This is the bloke and he's from Streatham (Stre'am) or St Reatham

He should know better (or be'er)

PrancerandDancer · 29/05/2022 22:21

I sometimes struggle with pronunciation, especially living in the south but am initially from the north.

I'm not an "idiot". I know what the words mean, like a PP, due to various reasons I find them tricky to say.

A few people like to correct me in a condescending manner. Usually these people are those who make unkind comments about others too. It gets tiresome.

But sure, if it makes you feel better to correct someone... Go ahead 🙄

I’m not a fan of people dropping the letter g at the end of words.

Beth Rigby interviewing Priti Patel would drive me up the wall.

I would have to mute them out.

Boyfriend says batt-er-ries as 3 syllables, I say batt-ries. I've no idea who's wrong but it really irritates me when he says it his way 😂

It's batteries. It's medicine.

it's not batries. It's not medsine.

CanofCant · 29/05/2022 22:25

I would never correct anyone but 'expresso' does irrationally irritate the life out of me.

Dreikanter · 29/05/2022 22:25

upinaballoon · 29/05/2022 22:21

I would have to mute them out.

To be fair, I always have Priti Patel on mute.

I find that’s best for my blood pressure.

I cannot stand it when people pronounce 'aitch' as 'Haitch'. You wouldn't pronounce the letter F as 'feff' would you? so why stick an erroneous 'h' at the beginning of 'aitch'. It gets me raging.

Foodcosts · 29/05/2022 22:30

@PurpleButterflyWings I'm a bit confused about this one, how would you pronounce Provence?

Not this again. This is a regional difference and has significant resonance, especially in Northern Ireland.

bellac11 · 29/05/2022 22:32

I hate haitch as well, but I suppose up until eff, each letter does have the sound of the letter in it, A, B, C, D, E..... then it changes to F, H, then back to the sound again I, J, K, ,, then it changes again to el, em, en,, I have to stop now as I dont know my alphabet!!!

Fidodidit · 29/05/2022 22:34

DH says “ahl-mond”. Does my head in. He’s got the kids doing it as well. We had a row about it this evening. He doesn’t say “pahlm” or “sahl-mon” so why “ahl-mond”? I do know someone with the surname Palmer who pronounces it “pahl-mer”, not really sure what to make of that.

Westfacing · 29/05/2022 22:35

A few weeks ago I heard Nadhim Sahawi, Education Secretary, pronounce hyperbole as hyper-bowl.

Change123today · 29/05/2022 22:36

The way my husband (& MiL) say garage…they seem to put a lot of effort into the word garage. They seem to say garrragggeeee - I can’t explain but it irrational why it annoys me!

ive no idea (or actually care) which is the right way but for some reason makes me want to scream every time he says it.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 29/05/2022 22:40

@MuMMA8

Pray tell. What's wrong with expresso?

Blueberry12 · 29/05/2022 22:42

What about anythink, somethink? The amount of people that say this is astonishing(k).

Garaaaage to rhyme with (Nigel) Farage?

We tend to say garridge (and so Nigel becomes Farridge).

Lucinda7 · 29/05/2022 22:43

There was a teacher at my school who pronounced corners as "coiners". Irritating. I thought epitome was pronounced as it looks.

DinosaurPotato · 29/05/2022 22:49

@VeniVidiWeeWee it's should be espresso

ChagSameachDoreen · 29/05/2022 22:50

My clarinet teacher used to pronounce "aromatherapy" as "ARRA-muh-therapy". Infuriating.

My mate says Ebola as "EBB-er-ler."

PurpleButterflyWings · 29/05/2022 22:53

MuMMA8 · 29/05/2022 22:05

@IstayedForTheFeminism I've a terrible northern Irish accent which is only confusing matters 😂

No such thing as a terrible Northern Irish accent. 😘

I listen to a crime podcast where the host regularly talks about 'burgleries' - drives me mad!

What other way is there to say it? I suppose I may have heard people say “burgelries” - but that’s not really correct, though it wouldn’t bother me.

PurpleButterflyWings · 29/05/2022 22:54

@ChagSameachDoreen

My mate says Ebola as "EBB-er-ler."

Are they from Yorkshire or Lancashire? Grin
