People mispronouncing words!!!

Is it rude to correct someone when they clearly mispronounce a word? 😂

I'm not talking about someone having dyslexia struggling to read a word out loud...

Also I'm SO curious to see if others truly don't know that they're saying the most obvious ones incorrectly e.g saying PACIFIC instead of SPECIFIC the mind boggles!! Or EXPRESSO instead of ESPRESSO

Another one which irks me is incorrectly saying DIAZEPAN instead of DIAZEPAM lol this one is so common...or pronouncing VEGAN as if it has an extra "a" after the "e" like VEAGAN 😂🤦🏼‍♀️

Heard someone pronounce the "ch" in ARCHIVE as ar-chive rather than ar-kive Lol I did not have the heart to correct them!

Any other good ones? Do you lot correct the idiots?!

My DH says Feb-brew-are-ee and rest-er-ron and I'm not sure I would have married him if I'd realised how irritating that would be.

That said I've just had a whole conversation with DS about quilts and kilts which he didn't realise were different things so perhaps I shouldn't have reproduced with DH either.

RESTERON! 😂

Batt-rees sounds odd. Batt-er-ies is correct IMO.

I HATE it when people say February as FEBREE instead of FEB-U-ARY.

And JAN-U-REE instead of JAN-U-ARY!

Oh you'd hate talking to me, I say satur-dee, mon-dee, choose-dee, thurs-dee, fri-dee, sun-dee

By the way, Im saying all the right days of the week, but not necessarily in the right order.

Someone referred to a plethORa of options yesterday which tickled me.

PurpleButterflyWings · 29/05/2022 21:43

One woman I know is going to Provence in August, and when people ask her if she is going away this year, she says 'yes, to PROVONNNNNSSS.' In a really BAD French accent. Like if I was going to Paris, I'd say 'we are going to PARIS.' I wouldn't say 'I am going to PARRRREEEEE' and roll the 'Rs!''

bellac11 · 29/05/2022 21:43

Jesus christ, I forgot Wens-dee

GordonBennetttt · 29/05/2022 21:43

My DP says buffet, pronouncing the t!

Oddly, those pronunciations of the days don't bother me. Lots of people say Wensdee, Thursdee, Frydee... It's just JAN-U-REE and FEB-U-REE that annoy me for some reason!!!

What about Fursdee. Grin

Ive moved to a part of the country where loads of people seem to use the phrase towing and froing by saying 'towing and throwing'

Loads of them do it, I cant work it out. Ive been here 13 years now and more and more people do it all the time

To-ing, surely? Towing is what you do to a caravan or a broken-down car.

A woman I work with pronounces “interim” as “in term”. Every other day she suggests an “interm solution” for things.

People writing 'which' instead of 'that' really irk me.

In American English, there is a distinction. 'Which' is used for non-restrictive clauses, and 'that' is used for restrictive clauses. Is there a different rule in British English?

Bloody hell! How supercilious of you.

Whelmed · 29/05/2022 21:47

My DH gets annoyed by people pronouncing rioja as "riokha". He says they wouldn't pronounce fajita as "fakhita" or jalapeno as "khalapeno" so why riokha.

I listen to a crime podcast where the host regularly talks about 'burgleries' - drives me mad!

Is it an American podcast? It's burglaries in the US.

Yes, wasnt sure how to spell it

but basically when you go to and fro, or in their words, to and throw

SenecaFallsRedux · 29/05/2022 21:50

To answer OP's question, I don't correct random people. I might correct a close family member, depending on the circumstances.

No, it's the same. We just call them defining and non-defining, but the grammar rule is the same.

Its better than asking for a white roger though isnt it?

(I drink a white roger because I am ultra sophisticated)

The pronunciation of the R in FebRuary is RP English.
We've dumbed it down to omit the R over the years.
The letter will probably disappear altogether in the future. (See also the D in WeDnesday)

Bobbins36 · 29/05/2022 21:54

@MissNothing1991 too many ads on my local FB marketplace offering chester draws for sale. Has me raging 🤣

bellac11 · 29/05/2022 21:55

What about skellingtons or ungyuns.

I wasn’t quite sure on spelling either. Sorry for missing the point of your post!

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 29/05/2022 21:56

Orientated IS correct. Oriented is twat-speak. MISScheevuss IS correct. No 'vious' on the end of it. Fucking wary pronounced as weary and vice versa drives me up the wall. I'd be delighted to be corrected if I ever utter some such drivel. Mind you, it was very recently I learned that it's not reNumeration but reMuneration!

BelperLawnmower · 29/05/2022 21:57

Dreikanter · 29/05/2022 21:29

I’m not a fan of people dropping the letter g at the end of words.

Beth Rigby interviewing Priti Patel would drive me up the wall.

Beth Rigby interviewing Priti Patel would drive me up the wall.

Anybody interviewing Priti Patel would drive me up the wall, and it wouldn't be the pronunciations.
