Is there a food you’ve always hated but have suddenly come to like?

I hate soup. All soup. Every flavour. Always have done.

And yet for the last 2 weeks I’ve eaten nothing but pea and ham soup! I had Covid and the only thing I felt like eating was this, and now it’s all I eat and I can’t stop! It’s most strange.

Is there anything you’ve come to love that you’ve always disliked?

Ps I’m not pregnant - that ship sailed years ago.

Mushrooms.
As a child then well into my adult years I despised everything about them.
I had a particularly savage hangover one day and I could smell fried mushrooms from a greasy spoon down the road which triggered an inexplicable need to have immediately. So, one plate of fried mushrooms on toast and I was converted!

Nailest · 27/05/2022 15:59

Think of all the mushrooms you missed out on over the years - thank god for hangovers!

Find this genuinely fascinating. I can't think of any

DuchessOfSausage · 27/05/2022 16:02

I don't eat soup and have no intention of eating it.
I hate celery but I like cheese and celery sandwiches.

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 27/05/2022 16:03

Polenta. Loathed it and then had it baked and spicy (at a restaurant) and now cook it regularly.

TheJubileeLion · 27/05/2022 16:03

Mince pies. For my entire childhood and young adulthood I could not see the attraction. Then I turned 40 and suddenly realised they were delicious little calorie bombs.

I have changed a lot in the past few years, stuff that I used to love doesn't interest me and I am drawn to foods that I never used to like. I have come to love eggs rather late in the day.

I had a bad cold (not covid) in February and it had the effect of increasing my appetite so my calorie intake must have doubled. Interestingly It didn't affect my weight, but I craved sugar. This might not sound unusual but I tend not to like it much ordinarily, and spent the entire fortnight stuffing chocolate eggs, marshmallows and ice cream down my throat. I just presumed my body really wanted it and would regulate as it saw fit.
My teeth are glad it ran it's course though!

DuchessOfSausage · 27/05/2022 16:05

@MadameCholetsDirtySecret , how do you cook it, please? i've only had it sort of sloppy and garlicky and wasn't impressed

BingleDiBing · 27/05/2022 16:06

Olives. They always tasted like tea bags/blood to me (I hate tea and can't say I make a habit of tasting blood Grin)

When I was about 24 I was in a restaurant, they put some olives in front of us. Had been working all day and hardly eaten, was starving hungry and ate one to keep me going. That was it. Converted. Love them. 20 odd years later and I still hate tea!

Paddingtonthebear · 27/05/2022 16:07

Peanut butter. No go for 40 years then just decided to start eating it. Weird!

HappyHappyHermit · 27/05/2022 16:07

Salmon, used to despise it but now absolutely love it.

AnyFucker · 27/05/2022 16:09

Green beans

Keladrythesaviour · 27/05/2022 16:09

I retry most things every 6 months or so and it's amazing what I now like. I used to hate nuts of any form, peanut but was like vomitm I know eat.slices of bread with the stuff piled on. Used to hate peppermint tea, now I live on the stuff... So many things!

Billandben444 · 27/05/2022 16:10

Coleslaw - a yucky mess of raw veg but suddenly I love it!

linenalltheway · 27/05/2022 16:11

Anchovies! Weird I know

darisdet · 27/05/2022 16:11

Salmon, used to despise it but now absolutely love it.

Another recent salmon convert here!

tootsierubs · 27/05/2022 16:13

Avocados

Fantail999 · 27/05/2022 16:15

Watermelon. Can't get enough of it now. For 30 plus years I used to think it was tasteless and had a horrible texture. I ate some in desperation to cure acid reflux.

TheSummerPalace · 27/05/2022 16:18

Custard - as a child, I couldn’t stand it hot or cold! I have never tried custard tarts; but I love it hot on a fruit pie or crumble; or cold in a trifle!

Bakedpotatoesfortea · 27/05/2022 16:18

I didn't like cheese as a child, now it's my favourite food.
I've also come to love marmite, and there are no vegetables I won't eat these days.
I am generally pretty unfussy but I struggle with some cuts of meat, especially things like liver, kidneys, heart.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 27/05/2022 16:18

Peas. I've no idea what it was about them but I couldn't have put one in my mouth. Fast forward nearly 50 years and I'm a convert! I think mushy peas are a step too far but petit pois are amazing!

Bakedpotatoesfortea · 27/05/2022 16:20

On the opposite side of that, covid ruined coffee for me 2 years ago. It used to be my favourite fuel source!

gingercat02 · 27/05/2022 16:21

Olives and olive things like tapanade. Always was a bit 🤢 but yummy now. Will never ever like raw tomatoes 🤮🤮

Imtoooldforallthis · 27/05/2022 16:25

Beetroot, I hated it as child all I remember is it bleeding into boiled eggs, love it now in all forms.
