Is there a food you’ve always hated but have suddenly come to like?

I hate soup. All soup. Every flavour. Always have done.

And yet for the last 2 weeks I’ve eaten nothing but pea and ham soup! I had Covid and the only thing I felt like eating was this, and now it’s all I eat and I can’t stop! It’s most strange.

Is there anything you’ve come to love that you’ve always disliked?

Another one for olives too, (I’m almost 40) so I think it’s an age thing. But when I was younger I couldn’t stand spicy food. As an adult I had jaw surgery (several failed attempts first and I very nearly died but that’s another story) my bottom jaw stuck out by 1mm beyond my top jaw and since then it meant I suddenly loved spicy food, apparently not unheard of with that type of jaw surgery. Strange, you wouldn’t think a surgery would make a difference to the tolerance of spice

Eggs. Up until i was in my 40's I couldn't stand them, I'm mid fifties now and I love a fried egg butty.

SilkBlouse · 27/05/2022 17:19

Stinky blue cheese. I thought it was vile and was well into my thirties when DH persuaded me to try a slither of Stilton. Absolutely obsessed with it now!

muddyford · 27/05/2022 17:22

I hated cheese, well into my twenties, thinking it smelled like vomit. Then I tried a piece of an M&S quiche on a picnic and I was away!

Olives. They always tasted like tea bags/blood to me (I hate tea and can't say I make a habit of tasting blood Grin)

When I was about 24 I was in a restaurant, they put some olives in front of us. Had been working all day and hardly eaten, was starving hungry and ate one to keep me going. That was it. Converted. Love them. 20 odd years later and I still hate tea!

Me too. Although it was only a couple of weeks ago and I'm 58 😳

JorisBonson · 27/05/2022 17:26

Tomatoes. Especially cherry tomatoes with a shit load of salt. I'm 37 and hated them until a few months ago!

florianfortescue · 27/05/2022 17:28

Capers! Always thought I hated them and avoided like the plague. Then a few weeks ago I had a salad with them in it, tried them again and realised they are delicious little blighters.

Probably for another thread, but has the reverse happened and you can no longer eat, or drink, something?

I recently, well past couple of years, went off tea, the sort you usually add milk to. I still like the herbal kind.

BBQ Beef Hula Hoops. I threw up after eating them as a kid (I was on a coach 🤢) and haven't touched them since.

LubaLuca · 27/05/2022 17:29

Olives for me too, which I think is a common one. I tried them regularly thinking I really should like them (salty, fruity, nice with booze - what's not to like?), but really didn't like them at all until suddenly I LOVED them when I was in my 30s.

enjoyingscience · 27/05/2022 17:31

Beetroot here. Hated it, but this year can’t get enough. So weird!

coleslaw too. Always hated it, but then really weirdly fancied it with a jacket potato one time. Very odd.

StrawberrySquash · 27/05/2022 17:34

I'm a great believer in trying things. So a little off someone else's plate so that it's low stakes.
Tea is something I've come to. It's very comforting when you are a bit blah.

CottonSock · 27/05/2022 17:40

I was converted to olives at a bar in Marakesh where they came free with every beer. 20 years later they are still the best olives ever, although some expensive waitrose ones come close.

Lacedwithgrace · 27/05/2022 18:10

During my first pregnancy I seriously went off coffee, fast forward 4 years and 5 pregnancies with no weird food things, I got pregnant again and craved coffee and now I love it again!

ShirleyJackson · 27/05/2022 18:13

I always hated strong blue cheese, until I was pregnant with DS2.

Have loved it ever since.

Onwards22 · 27/05/2022 18:15

Mushrooms and tomato soup (not together).

My entire life they’ve made me sick and I couldn’t even be in the same room if they were cooking but now I have them all of the time.

Pourmeanotherwine · 27/05/2022 18:23

I didnt acquire a taste for marmite until after manopause.

Libertaire · 27/05/2022 18:30

I hated chillis when I was young. I Couldn’t understand why anyone would want to eat something which burned their mouth. Now, I’m addicted to hot spicy food and find Tabasco a bit tame for my palate.

Newestname002 · 27/05/2022 18:36

Hot smoked mackerel. Used to loathe the texture, look, smell and taste. Now can't get enough of it. Also beetroot. In the "old days" I only knew of the nasty, over-vinegary, pickled stuff. The fresh version is utterly delicious.🌹

TheSummerPalace · 27/05/2022 19:58

Yes, bananas - in my first pregnancy and morning sickness, the smell of them was disgusting! I can just about eat green ones still; but I can’t be in the same room as ripe bananas! They say vomiting due to food has a powerful effect on us, as a survival thing - it certainly did on me!

reluctantbrit · 27/05/2022 20:56

Soup - still. don't. like most but was given one at a dinner party and now I love a roast pepper soup

Aspargus - only grilled but I am actually looking forward to the aspargus season now.

sleepfortheweek · 27/05/2022 20:57

Olives and peanut butter! (Not together)

Didn't like either of them until a couple of years ago and now they are like crack for me 🙈

SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit · 27/05/2022 20:58

Oh, goat's cheese. I used to wonder how anyone could stomach it. Love the stuff now!

I also got into olives and anchovies in the last couple of years.

Mince pies. For my entire childhood and young adulthood I could not see the attraction. Then I turned 40 and suddenly realised they were delicious little calorie bombs.

Every christmas I try a mince pie hoping I will like them but I still can't stand the taste 🤮 they look and smell so nice I really want to like them!

Exactly the same for me. I love Stilton and many other blue cheeses, but couldn't stand them when I was younger.

EcafTnuc · 27/05/2022 21:27

Cucumbers. Always hated them. Feel asleep during a TV show about a cucumber farm, and have liked them ever since.
