Is there a food you’ve always hated but have suddenly come to like?

I hate soup. All soup. Every flavour. Always have done.

And yet for the last 2 weeks I’ve eaten nothing but pea and ham soup! I had Covid and the only thing I felt like eating was this, and now it’s all I eat and I can’t stop! It’s most strange.

Is there anything you’ve come to love that you’ve always disliked?

Liver. After being put off by school dinners I love the stuff now. Chopped liver that you get in Jewish Delis is amazing.
I think your tastes change as you get older. Olives for me too.

Curry. I blame school dinners. I couldn't stand the stuff, they put sultanas in it and I still can't abide fruit with meat. They very smell made me gag.

Went to a friends for a girly night and she had madeThai green chicken curry. It was a case of either eat it or go hungry (and also embarras the host) so I ate it and loved it. Eat all sorts of curry now (as long as they are not too hot).

It’s so strange isn’t it? I guess our palates mature or some such nonsense, but to go from actively hating something - not just avoiding it or disliking it but hating it - to eating it all the time! We are weird :)

jalapeños and other chillis
pineapple on pizza
coleslaw

BlueKaftan · 27/05/2022 16:34

Mayonnaise. I’m in my 50s, went to Amsterdam and had homemade mayo with chips and was sad I couldn’t lick the plate.

linerforlife · 27/05/2022 16:35

Avocados. Only started eating them after my DD was born. Before that I hated the smell and texture Confused

PerfectionValley · 27/05/2022 16:36

Cucumber. I had hated it since childhood then suddenly realised it wasn't that bad, and now I quite like it. I have it quite often in salads and on kebabs and burgers, although I wouldn't eat it on its own.
Tomatoes (raw) I still hate though.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 27/05/2022 16:40

Ginger. Hated ginger for 33y. Got covid, now love it!

also sushi, properly discovered it at 32y and now just sad at all those missed sushi opportunities!

dropthevipers · 27/05/2022 16:40

Liver. Mum (who was otherwise a good cook) could transform it into burnt cork. Horrible. Tried it at a poncy restaurant out of curiosity a while back-delicious!

Whopbamboom · 27/05/2022 16:44

I have a couple.

Olives. They always tasted like perfume to me, until I had a really good one when eating out. It was like it triggered a switch in my tastebuds and now I find myself craving them from time to time.

Also, coriander. As a child I hated it. As an adult I cannot get enough of it!

And I know it's not a food, but sparkling water. I always thought it was foul and had a weird taste. I then had some when abroad on holiday and again it was like a switch. Very refreshing!

Same hear with cheese. When I was a child, I used to think it smelled like sick!
This just was very plain, mild, rubbery supermarket Cheddar. Couldn’t eat it.

About ten years ago I changed my mind when I was given some Roquefort and I’ve loved cheese ever since. The Cheddar has to be extra mature though.
Have always adored marmite, so never a problem there 😀

Bakedpotatoesfortea · 27/05/2022 16:47

Not sure it's our palate maturing or just our taste buds dying!

PuppyMonkey · 27/05/2022 16:47

I’ve always hated nuts, famously amongst all my friends who have experienced the horror of me finding nuts have been added to a pudding or etc - not allergic but just never liked the taste.

Been through menopause now (I sort of think this is relevant) and a while back, I ate an ice cream which later turned out to have nuts added and I hadn’t noticed, whereas before I would have immediately spat it out. So I tried nicking some of DP’s dry roast peanuts and OMG they are now my go-to savoury snack. Very weird.

Clevs · 27/05/2022 16:51

I've never like peppers or cucumbers. In the last few years though I have started eating them. I used to avoid anything with them in, or pick them out of salads. I can tolerate them enough to eat them now although if they were the main part of a dish I would choose something else.

IpanemaBelle · 27/05/2022 16:52

Blue cheese, my parents seemed to eat Stilton and crackers every evening growing up and I hated the smell of it. I had some at university (trying to impress a boy with my sophistication) and I loved it.

Mostly vegan atm though so haven’t had any for a while…

LaBellina · 27/05/2022 16:52

Red wine. I absolutely hated it as a teen / young adult and suddenly started appreciating it in my 30s.

Amipreg1 · 27/05/2022 16:53

I never liked fruit cake

Amipreg1 · 27/05/2022 16:54

Posted too soon somehow! I never liked fruit cake, mince pies, Eccles cakes etc until I got pregnant and then I've e liked them ever since!

WalkerWalking · 27/05/2022 16:54

Coffee. Hated even the smell of it, and never used to understand why everyone else happily wandered around all morning with rank coffee breath. But I had ridiculous coffee cravings in pregnancy, and it's stuck with me. I absolutely can't handle the caffeine though, so I only drink decaf (which I used to find the most bizarre option of all- gross bean water without even any oomph 🤣🤣)

jalapenita · 27/05/2022 16:54

Ham sandwiches. I am pregnant though. I used to hate any plain, meaty sandwich, but now I crave them!

darisdet · 27/05/2022 16:56

Probably for another thread, but has the reverse happened and you can no longer eat, or drink, something?

I recently, well past couple of years, went off tea, the sort you usually add milk to. I still like the herbal kind.

TheDogsMother · 27/05/2022 17:00

Coriander. Gin. Love them both now.

Wine. But I think I know the reason, wasn’t an inexplicable overnight change.

I've never liked eggs but when pregnant I craved scrambled eggs... I eat them now and again these days but generally find eggs, single cell, stinkiness, texture, utterly revolting.

Vampirethriller · 27/05/2022 17:09

I hated peanut butter with a passion until I was pregnant with my daughter, and then it was all I wanted to eat for ages. Still love it.
