Is there a food you’ve always hated but have suddenly come to like?

I hate soup. All soup. Every flavour. Always have done.

And yet for the last 2 weeks I’ve eaten nothing but pea and ham soup! I had Covid and the only thing I felt like eating was this, and now it’s all I eat and I can’t stop! It’s most strange.

Is there anything you’ve come to love that you’ve always disliked?

Brussel sprouts, hated them for 45 years of my life, enjoy them now with a roast dinner. Still can't stand cold baked bean juice 🤢

Imnotahippo · 27/05/2022 21:57

Marmite
brown bread
seeded bread
eggs
horseradish sauce
mince
onions

hated with a passion all the above as a child but love it now

used to love coffee, cake, bacon, gravy bananas and fruit gums
got pregnant with no1 and the morning sickness kicked in-the smell of all the above would make me vomit and went right off them
i can gingerly eat bacon now but only in small amounts and not with bread for some reason

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 27/05/2022 21:58

Porridge. The very thought of it used to make me sick, then one day I woke up and thought "mmm porridge!" Weird.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 27/05/2022 22:01

Butter. I used to cringe at people who layered it thickly on crackers and had my sandwiches entirely butter free. Nowadays I see bread and crackers not as foods in their own right, but as butter facilitators. The thicker spread the better.

Beetroot, I hated it as child all I remember is it bleeding into boiled eggs, love it now in all forms.

Came on to say beetroot as well. Had a beetroot flan in one restaurant, and beetroot in a salad in another restaurant. Discovered I actually quite like it, and so have started putting it in salads.

Penguintears · 27/05/2022 22:12

Coriander. I thought I had that gene that makes it taste like washing up liquid. I would pick it out of everything. Not sure when it changed but I love it now amd cover any Mexican food in a big layer of it!

ChatterMonkey · 27/05/2022 22:15

Coleslaw. Whole concept of it wass disgusting, why would i want to eat raw onion.

Until one day i got a total craving for coleslaw on toast, went out to buy some and have loved it ever since! (and no i wasn't pregnant haha)

12BottlesOfVintageChampagne · 27/05/2022 22:15

Yes! I have hated hummus for 44 1/2 years. All of a sudden, I am addicted - and I mean addicted - to Sabra hummus. It's so delicious! Why didn't I know until now???

SlowHorses · 27/05/2022 22:19

As a child I couldn’t stand bananas. I’m the opposite of a fussy eater (is that just greedy?!) but the texture and taste made me gag. I refused banana flavoured sweets etc.

Saying I now like bananas would be a stretch, but I can tolerate them and regularly eat with museli/yoghurt and enjoy it as part of that meal.

RosieRoww · 27/05/2022 22:20

Olives.
Didn't like the taste as a child, love them now as an adult.🫒

houseargh · 27/05/2022 22:22

Peanuts. Used to hate all things peanut, off the back of too many efforts to get me to eat peanut butter as a child. Still hate peanut butter but actual peanuts, snicker bars etc I now love. It was Bombay Mix that changed my mind

Daisy4569 · 27/05/2022 22:27

Strawberries are top of my list. Since having DS and having to enthusiastically try what he is I’ve found that I actually like a lot more than I thought I did!

DeanStockwelll · 27/05/2022 22:53

I wonder if its a change in hormones that makes us change our tastes.
Child to late teens
Pregnancy
Menopause
Your hormones are all over the place each time so it some how messes with the tastes buds.
It would be interesting to compare men and women to see if ( on average) men have as many changes of heart about what they like.

That said I can't think of anything that I hated that I now like or vice verse

coffeecupsandfairylights · 27/05/2022 23:02

Mushrooms
Tofu
Spinach
Broccoli

Hated them all as a child but like them as an adult.

The other way round, though, I now can't stomach raw tomatoes or bananas without gagging - the texture feels so wrong to me but I loved them as a child!

Came here to say the same. Olives! Although I am not a huge fan of the black ones.

Apollonia1 · 27/05/2022 23:08

Chocolate.

Hated it all my life. Then got pregnant and developed a love for Lindt mint chocolate balls.

CorsicaDreaming · 27/05/2022 23:16

Peas. Always hated them.
Then I discovered mushy peas. Love them. Never had them at home as a child.

Normal peas are till very meh- but I can eat them.

Quite like mange tout.
And edamame...
but I guess they're technically beans

Nailest · 28/05/2022 03:12

Olives are featuring heavily in the hate > love lists!

Pork, I used to hate it when we had roast pork for Sunday dinner but this last year I have started to love it.

LunaMoonHare · 28/05/2022 04:13

In the used to love but now can't eat list is steak for me, which is a really strange one and I don't know why it's happened but it literally has no appeal to me now. The thought of eating it makes me feel a bit 🤢

I went through a phase of not being able to eat pasta with a tomato based sauce after a really bad bout of tonsillitis as a teenager. Went back to normal several months later.

EcafTnuc · 27/05/2022 21:27

Cucumbers. Always hated them. Feel asleep during a TV show about a cucumber farm, and have liked them ever since.

😂

Mayo for me too, I never liked it until I was pregnant with my second DC. Can't think of many others, I seem to just get fussier.

Most foods I go off with it just happens, nothing traumatic like being sick, but the list is long: meat, fish, milk, cheddar, raw tomato, onions, eggs (so much I've actually moved into vegan mayo now which is delicious) rice, baked beans... I never loved this stuff, I guess I used to eat them out of habit and then one day realised I prefer not to have them. So strange!

gingaling · 28/05/2022 09:12

Pineapple and even like it on pizza now !

Delatron · 28/05/2022 09:38

Beetroot too.

I don’t think my tastes change more so my Gran used to give me boiled beetroot with an egg and it was such a rank combination.

Had some with ginger, properly seasoned and it was delicious.

Olives - just had to keep trying them until I leaned them.

Can tolerate mushrooms now after hating them. I think if you force yourself to eat something 16 times then you change your taste to it (something like that - read it with regards to kids and food ).

Delatron · 28/05/2022 09:38

Liked not leaned

knowinglesseveryday · 28/05/2022 18:08

Christmas cake.
