Highlights:
All families can now keep the 200 quid energy payment, no longer repayment based. This will be topped up to £400.
Low income families to get £650 straight into bank account.
(Non means tested) disabled benefit recipients to get £150.
All in all some will receive total of £1,200.
Funded by windfall tax.

The £200 wasn't paid directly to anybody.

It was to be paid to the energy companies and they were to give everyone £200 discount off their bill. This was then to be paid back by customers via their bill as a charge of £50 per year for four years.

This has now been scrapped.

Instead all households will get a discount this year of £400 and this does not have to be paid back.

For metered customers it will go to the energy company, not direct to customers (those on key meters will be dealt with separately)

The benefits bashing on this thread is horrible and also misinformed. Do you know what the biggest share of the UK's benefits pie goes on? Pensions, by a long shot. And out of a population of 80 million, did you know the number of people claiming UC is only 5.5 million? That's just 6.25% of the population. Housing benefit claimants total 2.7 million, or 3.35%. The grants announced today are helping the few, not the majority. Here's the breakdown of the benefit pie for anyone who needs educating.

The 200 loan idea ( which would go to the energy company , but have to be paid back ) was going to happen in October. That appears to have been scrapped now in favour of this windfall tax. That's how I read it!

No. people will get a £400 grant off their fuel bills.

What £200? I didn’t get a penny 😡

No one has yet. It isn't happening until October

the80sweregreat · 26/05/2022 15:04

So a grant then , but we don't have to pay this back ? Is that correct?

SpongeCake23 · 26/05/2022 15:04

We are on UC and my partner earns £17,300 before tax.

How much are you we likely to get?

RaspberryToo · 26/05/2022 15:04

@Rosscameasdoody Thanks, I didn't realise the UC roll out wasn't in every location yet - it's been done in all the ones I have lived in and it's been very easy to switch before being invited with protection.

Yes, correct.

RaspberryToo · 26/05/2022 15:05

@SpongeCake23

400 for fuel bills - directly to the energy companies.
650 payment in two instillments with the first being in July via UC.

And 150 pounds into your bank for the increase in Council Tax.

the80sweregreat · 26/05/2022 15:05

Ok, thank you !

TheYearOfSmallThings · 26/05/2022 15:06

I can't get that excited about it, because I'm only getting that 200 (now 400) that I won't really get because it will be given to the energy company instead. I mean, I suppose it's better than a kick up the arse.

Polyanne · 26/05/2022 15:07

ClaudineClare · 26/05/2022 15:01

That is because it hasn't happened yet.

Oh well if it’s based on council tax bands I won’t get it. Same as I didn’t get the council tax rebate. I’m asset rich but cash poor. Living in a nice house that I bought before I became disabled. So far I’ve been excluded from all of the measures designed to help people, because I suppose they want to force me to sell my home.

DrHildegardeLanstrom · 26/05/2022 15:07

But you do get the £400. It's taken off your energy bill.

DrHildegardeLanstrom · 26/05/2022 15:08

ITS NOT BASED ON COUNCIL TAX BANDS.

Sortilege · 26/05/2022 15:10

flashbac · 26/05/2022 13:12

I understand what you mean but the payments are one off.

I’ve just done the sums, and if my wages were low and entitled me to UC, or if I was unemployed, I’d be in equally deep trouble either way. Even as a disabled person getting the full £1200, I’d go under.

Lets just thank heavens we are lucky enough to have decent jobs eh?

flapjackfairy · 26/05/2022 15:10

So are those of us with disabked children on DLA eligible for the 150 . It seems to be for adults. We have 2 children with complex needs and we use a massive amount of electrical.equioment to keep them alive !

Youaremysunshine14 · 26/05/2022 15:10

Why are people going on about council tax bands?! There was a £150 rebate for everyone in bands A-D that was announced at the beginning of the year and people should have received the payment by now. There's no second £150 rebate.

Orangesandlemons77 · 26/05/2022 15:11

On the factsheet linked upthread an example is given of a household on 43K getting UC and benefiting from the cut to the taper rate (and the £650 lump sum here for means tested benefits as well)

I was surprised that it was possibly to claim UC on 43K. Maybe more people are eligible for it now the taper rate has changed. Not sure.

I don't think you could claim tax credits on 43K.

DrHildegardeLanstrom · 26/05/2022 15:11

Adults don't get DLA, they get pip?

Dla is mainly a child’s benefit now so it seems it is for anyone. Contact for children the disabled childrens chairty certainly seem to think so

PurpleButterflyWings · 26/05/2022 15:12

Wonderful news! 😍 There will be certain people though (already a few on this thread) who want the poor to keep licking crumbs out of the bins of the well-off/rich. I mean God FORBID they are handed a sum of money to make their lives less difficult for a few months! Good lord! Hmm

DrHildegardeLanstrom · 26/05/2022 15:12

Here's the fact sheet again
www.gov.uk/government/publications/cost-of-living-support/cost-of-living-support-factsheet-26-may-2022
Please read it before getting upset about what you may or may not get.

BarbaraofSeville · 26/05/2022 15:13

The government wording says something about 'adults in receipt of DLA'

It wouldn't at all surprise me for them to get it wrong about the type of benefit that adults with disabilities are entitled to and also forget about families with children in receipt of DLA who may also need the extra help.

Lots of councils haven't finished paying it yet, especially if you don't pay by DD so if people haven't recieved it, I think they are getting confused.
