Essex people and Dubai

Why Does everyone From Essex always seem to go on holiday to Dubai?
it's so common now it's become tacky. On a serious note tho, it's a concrete jungle. If you want sun and beach why not go to The Carribean for example!?

Glad a lot seem to get my drift on here. And whoever said it was aspirational ha pull the other one!

Have a quick google search of 'Dubai potty'. A lot of Essex Instagram influencers go there to work as sexual slaves as such in return for money. I thought it was pretty common knowledge.

Woah!

Porta Potties - Urban Dictionarywww.urbandictionary.com › define › term=Porta...
Dubai Porta Potty ... An Instagram influencer who travels to Dubai to get pooped on by wealthy Arab men for large sums of money. Seeing that she had no brand ...

God the sneery old Essex stereotypes. So dreary.

where are you based OP? Let’s have a go at sneering at wherever then is.

for the record I’m not from Essex but I’ve lived there for 25 years. It’s a very interesting and diverse county with it’s fair share of classy people and places. HTH.

This. I’m from a way ‘leafier’ county but have lived here now for 17 years and I love it!

I think out of all my Essex based friends and acquaintances (which are many having lived here for so long) I know max 3 that have been to or go to Dubai for their holidays.

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 24/05/2022 20:05

I have been to Dubai and I’m from NI so I’m not sure where that fits into the OP’s stereotype.

incidentally I did not particularly enjoy it and won’t be rushing back.

I'm from Essex and have been to Dubai twice. Once 20 years ago to visit a friend who was working there. Had a great time and enjoyed visiting the souks and museum and went on a tour of a mosque and enjoyed a really memorable talk about Islam and the difference between their cultural and religious traditions. Also bumped into Andre Agassi who was playing tennis on the the helipad of the hotel we were having afternoon tea in. We then flew off to the Maldives for a week. It was a fabulous holiday.

I don't recall meeting anyone else from Essex there.

Went again a few years ago to catch up with the same friend to meet his new wife as we'd not been able to make it to his wedding sadly . Didn't enjoy it as much as it was so built up and busy and glitzy and expensive by then.

The hotel was full of people from Hertfordshire who you would have thought were straight from Towie but from listening to their conversations realised where they were really from. Everyone else seemed to be from Russia.

I absolutely adore where I live in Essex and I'm almost glad people are so bloody snobby about it as means our lovely town remains a proper hidden gem.

And the stereotypes / stigma means it’s still way more affordable here!

i know at least as many people from my home county that love to go to Dubai as I do people from my adopted county.

NC1010 · 24/05/2022 20:10

Google Dubai porta potty if you must know

SlowHorses · 24/05/2022 20:10

I’d never go to Dubai because it is a fake concrete jungle built on slavery; consumes too many natural resources and has an appalling human rights record - not because people from Essex go there 🤔.

Have you been to the Caribbean OP? Some of the islands/resorts are cheap tourism at their worst.

NC1010 · 24/05/2022 20:12

I do think this is a bonkers goady thread though.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 24/05/2022 20:13

@EssexCat not for much longer I fear. Two houses in my street have gone on the market for £1.1m and £1.4m this week. These are 4 bed 1930's detatched with postage stamp gardens. I'll be amazed if they go for that but there has been an increase in prices since lockdown because of people leaving London.

Petrifiedtossed · 24/05/2022 20:14

@SlowHorses that's cause u have class and see it for what it is. You don't need to go there just so your fb or insta is complete.

I get it Op.

My family live in Dubai so I got there a lot but it's tacky and "Essex-y" AF!

Petrifiedtossed · 24/05/2022 20:20

@user7637293 exactly!

Ok I’m not from Essex, or even the UK. Been to Dubai many times, on family holiday and dh used to work there. I like Dubai, that is honestly if you stay at a luxury hotel and not in the touristy Marina. It’s awful and tacky, I hate it.

It’s actually an interesting place, I certainly don’t agree with some of their laws etc, but I’ve had such a great time every time I’ve been. And it’s been an eye opener (as many other places in the world) to bring the children (now soon adults) and they can make their own judgement on how they want their own life to be and where they want to live, assuming you just talk about the facts of what the laws actually are - and that they find out themselves that the luxury is great..for a while. It’s a holiday.

FitAt50 · 24/05/2022 20:26

Its Blackpool for new money

DogOnBlanket · 24/05/2022 20:28

And a great holiday. And yes, we get upgraded to first class for free which definitely adds to the experience!

Petrifiedtossed · 24/05/2022 20:30

Probably not the same town but snap, Angels 😊

Yes me too.

@Petrifiedtossed god knows where you live. It sounds vile. Where I live isn’t. You clearly mix with the wrong people too. 🤷‍♀️

Petrifiedtossed · 24/05/2022 20:33

Maybe that's it, mixing with wrong people.

Depends on where you go though op. But you have already made up your mind, fair enough. It does seem to have become an ultimate pretend-rich holiday for some.

Where do you like to go on holiday?

Petrifiedtossed · 24/05/2022 20:36

@DogOnBlanket absolutely the case (pretend rich holiday).
Maldives 30 years ago before it was commercialised, I'm into diving and it has the best diving I've ever found. Stayed in a basic beach hut and that was enough for me. I go there to dive.
other than that when it comes to beach time places I enjoy the Dalmatian coast line and also love river cruising in Europe.

Wheresmywoolyjumpers · 24/05/2022 20:37

Got a friend from yorkshire, lives in a very posh part of Berkshire, loves Dubai. I would not go near the place, way too shady and based, as a PP said, on slavery.

greenbirdsong · 24/05/2022 20:38

I'm from Essex and have never been to Dubai and don't know anyone who's been there.

OddsandSods · 24/05/2022 20:38

New Benidorm innit

My dh have been on fishing trips in the Seyshelles, but they only went there to fish. Looked fantastic. I’ve never been, but went to Sanibel Island recently and would like to ho back. I live in the very north of Europe, if you like snow and dog sledding you might love it here. But I just think there are different sort of holidays, and so much depends on which areas you go to.
