As above have you ever been popular or well known on MN . And decided to name change and take a back seat?

OP posts:

I’ve just googled something (not MN related, just a question about something) and found an MN thread from 2003 where people knew each other’s kids by their real names! Crazy.

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 21/05/2022 12:09

God no. I would hate it. I’ve been here for 13+ years and name change fairly regularly.

yesthatisdrizzle · 21/05/2022 12:12

I'm fairly well known on one of the niche topics, and have had occasionally had people call on me for advice. I use a different name for that section only.

Bluntness100 is the only username I remember but I haven’t seen her for a while. I think she was popular. Myself, I prefer to lurk unnoticed.

They are the poster I was thinking of.

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 21/05/2022 12:29

Been here a long time but not prolific enough to be known! With all the namechanging that goes on I do kind of miss getting to "know" posters. I don't feel I know anyone on here anymore, or at least I don't know I know them! But I think all the crap with the press using the site for stories makes people so much more guarded, which is a shame

AnnaMagnani · 21/05/2022 14:22

Not massively so but I went through a skin care phase and posted a lot of skin care advice. Got a lot of posts asking me for advice and calling me a guru - definitely not, just had spent a weekend reading the evidence, it wasn't that hard.

Completely freaked me out, namechanged and gave up skin care interest.

SpeedofaSloth · 21/05/2022 14:33

Nope. Don't think I would want to be.

BitOutOfPractice · 21/05/2022 14:35

I had something named after me on the long-running Archers threads a few years back. That was the height of my "fame" 😁

PuppyMonkey · 21/05/2022 14:45

I once got "quote of the week" when Morning Paper still did that. I think it was about 15 years ago. That's still my ultimate claim to fame. Grin

Ah, the BOOP moments?

Shaambaalaa · 21/05/2022 14:56

Name changed since but I was the one who started the Kirstie Allsopp thread that got her in trouble with the Daily Mail for picking up her covid infected husband + uninfected kids and driving them to her holiday home in Devon.

I often wonder what happens to really prolific posters who just disappear one day.

Do they post under different names? Find a new forum? Or just cold turkey?

Rogue1001MNer · 21/05/2022 15:09

I remember that thread @Shaambaalaa

I always think of Worra as being mn royalty as she's been here a v v v long time and hasn't nc'd (or if has, still uses WL a lot). I like her and often find myself in agreement with her.

Various other UNs I recognise, several mentioned already and some posters.

Some people on mn I recognise their names because I like them and/or think they're funny (@JesusInACabbageVan amongst others) and some I recognise for the opposite reason!

Not famous or well known myself. My peak mn moment was where there was a thread about the funniest things you've ever read on mn and a poster quoted a comment of mine. That was a proud moment (different UN).

I'll probably get this wrong now cos I haven't seen it for a long time but something like FuckYouChisAndThatIncludesThatHorse is a brilliant name and comes from a v v funny thread (which I think might be in classics)

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/05/2022 15:12

I get told off every now and then, "oh MrsTP you like to think of yourself as reasonable/nice/clever but look at the terrible thing you said" Grin So some posters are definitely keeping score.

There's a few posters I smile when I see, often the Terry Pratchett names, obviously. Mostly, I don't look at the NN unless it's a really clever or really awful response.

There's a few I miss. StewieGriffinsMum etc.

Or get banned, perhaps @TigerLilyTail ???? 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️
(No insider knowledge, just hypothesising)

sews · 21/05/2022 15:15

I have around a dozen names on the go at any one time. For privacy. I've name changed to post here. In the old days, when ''twas all fields, I didn't feel the need to do that.

I think you can become too well known. Bluntness said she'd had trouble with people following/stalking/imitating.

BanditBluey · 21/05/2022 15:17

Not me. There are usernames I remember and can think off the top of my head though as see them a lot. would it be creepy to name them?! Don't want them to think I'm stalking them 😂

Waxonwaxoff0 · 21/05/2022 15:29

No. I've been here since 2014 but changed username a few years ago.

ssd · 21/05/2022 15:40

Ive been here since 2004 and no one knows me Grin

Rogue1001MNer · 21/05/2022 15:43

Actually @ssd yours is a name I always recognise (not in a bad way)

Oblomov22 · 21/05/2022 15:48

I don't think it's the same now. I don't think anyone now is as famous as they were back in the day. I love seeing posters on threads that I know are old timers though!

Oblomov22 · 21/05/2022 15:50

Everyone knows you ssd.

HuntingoftheSnark · 21/05/2022 16:06

Oblomov22 · 21/05/2022 15:50

Everyone knows you ssd.

And you too Oblomov22. I notice the posters with who I agree pretty much all the time and give consistent and considered advice, like AnnelovesGilbert.

I wondered what happened to HelenaDove.

SnowyPetals · 21/05/2022 16:07

There are some posters I recognise from individual boards as really sensible and helpful advice givers. Also a few who I routinely find to be bitter, combative or just unpleasant whatever the topic!

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 21/05/2022 16:19

I just checked and I have had 339 usernames on MN Shock (Settings>Account>User name history if anyone wants to see theirs!) When I joined I had the same username for yonks too! Some of the names were just one offs for specific threads that might have been outing. I have different names I use for different topics, but this is my favourite atm.

There are only a handful of names I "recognise" now on MN which makes me feel sad, but also a massive hypocrite as I haven't kept my OG name Grin
