Pedantle: new online word game!

1000 replies

Plexie · 19/05/2022 22:12

Anyone found this yet? It started today as an offshoot of Cemantle.

cemantle.herokuapp.com/pedantle

It's like Redactle in that you have to guess the words of (part) of a Wiki entry, but unlike Redactle (which displays the whole text once you have guessed the title) Pedantle lets you carry on guessing individual words after you've guessed the title, so you can 'play' for longer. Then you can click the reveal text button to see the whole entry.

It's on US time (west coast) and a new game starts at either 7pm or 8pm BST.

What’s everyone else’s tactic? I start with all the really common stuff (the, in, of etc) and then use the sentence structure that emerges as a key to known phrases, but I’m not sure it’s the most efficient way of doing it.

Yes, that's what I do. I suppose the alternative is to put in the sorts of words you might use as starters in cemantle or semantle, I've not tried that.
There never seem to be any of the typographical type of clues that happen in some of the redactle topics, so I don't suppose it's possible to get a hole in one other than by pure luck.

I call the 'structure words' and 'content words'

With pedantle I always start with some structure words to help give the shape of the piece. Plus some of my broad category content words like 'history', 'early' 'life'.

Yes I try all the ands it's buts etc first. Then if the subject is not clear I try
History
Born
Died
Early
Ancient
Taxonomy
Etymology
Genus
Species
Animal/ Mammal
Europe/an
America/n
Asia/n and so on...
Old
New
War
Century/decade
Philosophy
Biology/Chemistry/physics
One, two, three also 1,2,3
i.e and e.g
18th, 19th, 20th,21st

All that normally gets me to a place where I can start making educated guesses

Lambing22 · 30/05/2022 12:31

I am absolutely stumped on today's! Full of black boxes!

Plexie · 30/05/2022 14:35

@Lambing22 Try husband, wife etc.

Has anyone else found that if 'America' is a close word, it actually turns out to be 'India'? Something to bear in mind. (Not related to today's word, just an observation.)

In the Uralic Languages one, I had tried several different countries, which appeared as matches in different places. I'd tried both Chinese and American; can't remember what the former matched to, but the latter was the match for Russian. Grin

Got to the type of thing/area but then had to Google as I didn't think I knew any of them. Turns out I had heard of it, doubt I'd have dragged it out of my memory though.

I worked out what it must be, and filled out a lot of the text, so was quire pleased with how it went. But I had to use google to get a necessary specific (hope that's vague enough!) I couldn't have got it without doing that

aliasname · 30/05/2022 22:55

Just found out that if you type an English spelling, it automatically checks for american spelling ~ useful to know so you don't waste time typing both

Bdragon · 31/05/2022 07:43

103 guesses, googled when I got to 100. Hadn't heard of it so would never have got it.

fruitbrewhaha · 31/05/2022 08:33

Gosh that was hard, 733rd in 233 guesses and annoyingly.........I've been there.
Something it really threw up to me was how rubbish I am at spelling, I had to look up all sorts, I knew I was bad but still.
