Pedantle: new online word game!

1000 replies

Plexie · 19/05/2022 22:12

Anyone found this yet? It started today as an offshoot of Cemantle.

cemantle.herokuapp.com/pedantle

It's like Redactle in that you have to guess the words of (part) of a Wiki entry, but unlike Redactle (which displays the whole text once you have guessed the title) Pedantle lets you carry on guessing individual words after you've guessed the title, so you can 'play' for longer. Then you can click the reveal text button to see the whole entry.

It's on US time (west coast) and a new game starts at either 7pm or 8pm BST.

I don't get it ~ I've just got a load of nonsense text with repeated words so far:

year species into time [blank] year (america, american, american, [blank] america)

Hopefullyit will make sense when I figure out the title?

Plexie · 19/05/2022 22:44

If you guess a word correctly it highlights the word(s) in green and then displays them as black text on a white background.

If you enter a word that has a similar meaning to the correct word, it highlights it red and then displays the word in shades of grey, depending on how close you are. So, for example, if the correct word is 'mainly' but you enter 'mostly' that would appear in grey, to indicate you're on the right track.

Given the amount of 'america'-related words, it's probable that the topic is something to do with America, so keep putting in words relating to America and it should build a picture of the wider topic.

Okay, so for my above text, only a couple of words might be correct ~ the others are just similar?

I’m not sure about this vs redactle - maybe tomorrow I’ll start by filling in all t(E words you get ‘for free’ in redactle

I’m not sure the semantic relationships always work well in this, especially for proper nouns they’re likely to be misleading rather than helpful.

I don't think any of your words in that extract are correct (I guess they're not displaying as black text on white background?). I can tell you that one of your 'blanks' is a very easy word!

Try lots of common short words (I don't know the grammatical name for them): is, as, the, they, on, and etc etc. And some basic numbers written in word form.

I quite enjoyed that. Took a few minutes to get the hang of it. A bit harder than redactle, in that its harder to get a full sentence to search when your stuck.

AuntieStella · 20/05/2022 07:30

I spotted this late last night, had a bit of a go then and got there this morning

I think it may be easier to get misled and stuck in this one

Friolero · 20/05/2022 08:16

I got totally confused with this at first, with all the repeated grey words but got there in the end and hopefully it'll make more sense next time!

Hmm I've got the second word in the heading and giving up - not a subject I'm interested in or know anything about.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/05/2022 08:43

It's quite a well-known [second word] but I agree not as generally interesting as most of the redactle topics.

InMySpareTime · 20/05/2022 08:59

I got it, but took ages to figure out what the "orange word" system meant.
For a while I thought it was putting in words that fit into the boxes whether they made sense or not, eventually I noticed the boxes were changing size and figured out it was semantically related words. I got stuck on the AKA bit near the start, with two of the three bold words, then eventually got enough to Google from.

I don't think I like that the size of the boxes has to change when it gets a related word - in redactle, the box size is a very useful clue.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 20/05/2022 09:09

Did it last night. Not overly convinced by it yet.

I also don't know what the colour bar is on the result. What does the number of greens/oranges/reds represent? How can you get the answer with no greens at all (as per PP)?

aliasname · 20/05/2022 16:33

Finally! It might have helped if the very first one hadn't been so american specific, just so we could get the hang of how to play. Something straightforward, like dogs or of worldwide note eg. ukraine. Still it's interesting 😉

It must be some sort of proportion of words which were exact hits, ones which had some semantic relationship, and ones which had no similarity.

ENoeuf · 20/05/2022 20:03

I can't follow it! I thought it was revealing all the words I'd guessed and that it was just really poorly written. I'm not sure about how they are related? Similar meaning or sounds like?

Eg garden - guard
Or
Garden - field

???
