or lowered vat on fuel and domestic energy

Weren't we promised these as a benefit of Brexit? We have left the EU so what is stopping the Government from implementing this reform?

Help should be targeted, its total madness to give £400 to people who have no need for it, so only helping someone on £20k p.a with £400 whilst also giving £400 to someone on £200k.
This is the flaw with cutting VAT, it actually benefits people with swimming pools and brace of Teslas, far more than a struggling pensioner etc.

BUT i suspect the aim isn't to help anyone at all, its to add cash into the economy.

The bottom line will be that come next winter, with unit prices around 60p per Kw, this money will have been spent long ago and the need will still be there.

Braverman.

Worth bearing in mind, the question this was replying to was: Can I ask the attorney general one very straightforward question, which only requires a yes or no answer: did she personally authorise the briefings to the Times and to Newsnight regarding her advice on the protocol?
twitter.com/Politics_co_uk/status/1529772350241222656?t=ZE2RC5BTCQrCTKl6exntSw&s=19

I wish the speaker just occasionally would intervene and tell the likes of Braverman to answer the sodding question.

Chancellors help package - if the average fuel bill cost will go up by £800 this year and you will get £400 off your bill you aren't actually being given anything and are in fact £400 a year worse off ? Or did I miss something?

And I can't see that a one-off payment is going to make a massive difference anyway. We will still have to find £800 next year, but they are no doubt hoping it won't be so high profile by then and/or will have got buried in amongst all the other effects of inflation.

Matt Green In all humility…

There was also this in Sunak’s statement which seem to got lost

Buried in Rishi Sunak’s windfall tax announcement is the fact that oil and gas companies will get a big tax cut if they extract more fossil fuels in the UK.
twitter.com/AdamBienkov/status/1529799713326768130?t=5g7yIpb7zMy2ywYtMIszRA&s=19

And they will have to come up with more help next year, those high energy prices are not going away anytime soon. Warnings are already being given.

ABBA party, article behind paywall

twitter.com/Steven_Swinford/status/1530088689153589250?t=dbEV3FYcb8A9-bHxmbW3yg&s=19
^Exclusive:

Boris Johnson, his wife & 5 special advisers were issued with questionnaires by Scotland Yard over alleged ‘Abba party’ in his flat on night Dominic Cummings left No 10

None of them were fined

PM claimed he was working on building new team

We've now switched off our central heating and only switch on the hot water (boiler with tank, not combi) for about half an hour a day. Just enough for a shower. Will occasionally treat ourselves to longer so that we can have a bath (sharing the water). So at least for gas, our usage is minimal. That will of course change in winter Sad

But I can't seem to reduce our electricity usage to below 8-10kwh per day - which still adds up to c£5 a day, even now in the summer! Shock We're now careful to only boil enough water for the pot of tea, put the dishwasher on eco (which takes 4.5 hours Shock) overnight on average every 2nd day (usually only 2 of us in the house), 2 washing machine loads a week, one light on in the living room in the evening....

I can see why people are shit scared of their future energy bills Sad

DuncinToffee · 27/05/2022 10:09

Armando Ianucci sums it up well

This week the whole country learned what it’s like to be in a relationship with Boris Johnson. Sue Gray Report: ‘I’m so so sorry.’ Windfall Tax: ‘But let me make it up to you.’

And yet even on days when you use no gas, you will still be paying the much increased standing charges.

Paul Holmes quits as PPS to Priti Patel. He has a fairly sizeable majority, but in exactly the kind of seat that worries Tory MPs – with the Lib Dems on his tail.

NEW: Boris Johnson has watered down the ministerial code - allowing ministers to break the rules without resigning - and blocked a bid to give his ethics advisor the power to investigate him…

DuncinToffee · 27/05/2022 14:58

New foreword by the Prime Minister to the updated ministerial code. Gone are the sections about the "very highest standards of propriety", "there must be no bullying and no harassment; no leaking; no breach of collective responsibility. No misuse of taxpayer money"... etc

Who defines misuse of taxpayer money? Because his flat refurb was very expensive...

carefullycourageous · 27/05/2022 15:13

Rewriting the ministerial code is shameless. What a moral vacuum he is.

If you voted for him - thanks a fucking bunch.

As long as Johnson believes he did not misuse tax payers money there is no issue.
Unicorns, not facts, matter.

No Confidence spreadsheet 2.0, now with extra exciting data:

🚨 20 publicly MPs calling for immediate resignation. 29 questioning PM
👶 2019ers 2nd most mutinous intake. 2010 in front
👀 Largan, Ross + Hammond on wafer thin majorities
🟠 High % of Lib Dem 2nd places

I'm depressed and worried about all of this.

www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/may/27/boris-johnson-changes-ministerial-code-to-remove-need-to-resign-over-breaches

Johnson has removed all references to honesty, integrity, transparency and accountability..

And no investigations without his specific consent.

Is this how low we have sunk? We are in Dictator territory. My disgust and dislike of him knows no bounds.

Can someone tell me how you can change the Ministerial code without a vote. It's bizarre

balalake · 27/05/2022 15:43

Only 20, not 200, hardly exciting data. Very sad that so many are deluded, in fact I begin to wonder if they are using illegal drugs or have some dark secret that will be exposed.

Roussette · 27/05/2022 15:48

So... instead of integrity, honesty, transparency and accountability we have this....

Instead, the PM said ministers’ duty was to be “innovating, challenging assumptions and striving always to mobilise the power of the state for the benefit of the public”.

OP posts:
ClaudineClare · 27/05/2022 16:11

So he has rewritten the rules he has broken, removed the penalty he should pay and given himself the power to decide on sanctions.

Agree that this is dictatorship territory. There is a truly dangerous man lurking behind that blond buffoon act.

Roussette · 27/05/2022 16:17

Yes. This has all been done in time for his investigation. If he has been found to have broken the Ministerial code, there will be no accountability and he will be allowed to decide on his own punishment.

InMySpareTime · 27/05/2022 16:25

Is it retrospective then?

DuncinToffee · 27/05/2022 16:25

Scary isn't it

Not sure if this speech by Mhairi Black has been shared on this thread but worth repeating anyway

It is vital we discuss the F word or we risk facing regret forever.

Is it retrospective then?

No, but he is still under investigation as to whether he mislead parliament so it's nice timing for him. Harriet Harman is set to be the Chairman of the Priviliges Cttee investigating him

Mhairi Black has it right
