Work events were also banned weren't they?

What he means is 'I thought everyone drinking copious amounts of alcohol was working, because drinking multiple bottles of wine whilst working is perfectly normal in my world'.

FFS. They were presumably not working, because they were pissed. If they were working when pissed, that is not really better.

If I had seen my colleagues drinking loads of booze, I would have thought they had stopped working and started drinking. Obviously, because my workplace, whilst laidback, is normal and staffed by normal people who take their jobs seriously.

“Saying sorry at 1922 & then reducing everything to a joke. Tractors & farmers, drinking at work and something about the Second World War. Everything is a joke & some laugh along. Making us all the clowns in his circus.”

He's joking about the porn incident too?

…and it’s conspicuous that he’s not addressing why he didn’t intervene in these gatherings that he was only at for minutes. Truth is that he can’t bear not being Mr Popular and has always had a transactional relationship with people. There’s no reason to praise him if he’s not giving people something, no reason for any kind of relationship with him at all really.

future historians are going to have a field day with his psychology and what a desperate delusional sad act he really is.

Peregrina · 25/05/2022 18:49

Boris Johnson replied that he thought Britain may not have won the Second World War if alcohol hadn’t been available in Downing Street in 1940.

Not a student of history then, is he Johnson?1940 was when the British Expeditionary Force had to be evacuated from Dunkirk, leaving their equipment behind. Which his wine soaked hero described accurately as a colossal military disaster. The UK was then not able to mount an offensive until D Day in 1944 with considerable assistance from the Americans, and aided significantly by the fact that Hitler had gone and declared war on Russia and tied up his troops on the Eastern front.

Blossomtoes · 25/05/2022 19:20

Wow. Wes Streeting on ITV news sounds exactly like a PM in waiting.

Notonthestairs · 25/05/2022 19:20

A timely reminder of what the PM spokesperson told us back in December.

It's shocking really. Lied to our faces.

What a lot of spineless fools most of the Tories are. It is so disheartening. We are fucked, we really are.

balalake · 25/05/2022 19:24

It won't happen, but as mentioned earlier, I would support the Prime Minister being dismissed by the Queen using the Royal Prerogative.

Maybe it could be her Jubilee gift to the nation.

That would be utterly amazing.

Blossomtoes · 25/05/2022 19:30

Wouldn’t it?

User135644 · 25/05/2022 19:35

The English make me laugh. You make out you're annoyed but you'll still vote Tory next election.

There's no cure for permanent Stockholm Syndrome. Never underestimate the English love for the Tories and capacity to forelock tug.

They're justlaughing at you.

ClaudineClare · 25/05/2022 19:37
  1. I am not English
  2. I have never voted Tory.
carefullycourageous · 25/05/2022 19:37

I agree with Iain Martin's perspective here In refusing to think about this from first principles, asking what sort of government the country needs in a crisis, huge harm is being done short thread: twitter.com/iainmartin1/status/1529520149035995139

You do realise they do not get 100% vote share in England? It is not nice to be lumped in with their voters!

Uhuh.

Tell you what, go and have a look at the actual figures (turnouts, the numbers making up majorities) from elections, including brexit, then come back and tell me how that represents the views of ‘the English’.

Well the porn thing was just Neil being a bit of a lad really.

I hope so, but they can usually rely on the English (particularly Boomers, less so younger voters) to vote them in come hell or high water as long as Murdoch and the Mail tell them too.

The Tories are just laughing at them now.

itsgettingweird · 25/05/2022 20:03

Caught up with PMQs now.

Starmer grows on me week one week having been disappointed in him at the beginning and expecting more.

He's actually got an astute sense of humour which cuts to the core.

Actually laughed when he made the hindsight comment!

itsgettingweird · 25/05/2022 20:06

Also wanted to thank those who were so supportive over my mum. Just to say she passed away last Thursday.

And still we had to be limited to 2 at a time in masks whilst she was in the hospice to protect staff and other patients.

I wish Johnson and Co had the work ethic of the NHs workers and of doctors and nurses (all care staff) in other sectors.

I've seen real compassion the past few weeks and it's made me realise how utterly lacking in any our government are.

L1ttledrummergirl · 25/05/2022 20:17

@itsgettingweird
I am so sorry for your loss.Flowers

Notonthestairs · 25/05/2022 20:23

itsgettingweird - really sorry to read about your Mum.

I know what you mean about care/NHS staff - my MIL and my Dad have both had recent stays in hospital and we've been liaising with carers and physios. All have been so kind and gentle.

Peregrina · 25/05/2022 20:31

I sincerely hope so.
