Roger Gale
"Tory MPs have to decide what to do & we have to do the right thing... as we're dealing with a man who's effectively without shame, who is prepared to fight to the last drop of everybody else's blood in order to hang onto the door handle of No.10.."

DuncinToffee · 25/05/2022 09:49

'Moving on' as if it is that simple. Many people are only just starting to process what happened to them over the last 2 years.
Just read the heart breaking posts on the 13 Nov thread.

Yes.never thought the day would come where Roger Gale and I agree but here we are. Desperate times make for strange bedfellows.

I know Duncin. Just heartbreaking. What some people went through, just terrible.

And unfortunately, the likes of BJ and his followers make the right noises about what people had to cope with... but it never comes across as what I would call real empathy. It just doesn't. It's making the right noises, saying the right words, but not coming from the heart.

I always think of Matt Hancock, he did this fake tearful strain every sinew, protective ring of steel speeches on and on and on... all whilst he was breaking the rules.
It's all an act with this lot. They really don't care.

Can I call bingo? I've had the TV on for 20 minutes so far today and I think I've got all of them.
Not to mention, it's the civil service to blame, Boris didn't know it was a gathering when he attended. He just saw all the people gathered in one room, maskless and without social distancing in complete contrast to the laws he had just told the nation to follow and joined them to make a speech (which didn't include asking them what the fuck they were doing and telling them to get their masks on and fuck off back to their workstations).

Roussette · 25/05/2022 10:11

You win the prize! A Krispy Kreme donut one of which is on the table in the latest picture...when staff were texted to say 'The Bar Is Open' (every Friday at 4pm). And goodness me, the bar opened on a Tuesday, as well as every Friday

Depressingly true from Best for Britain

THREAD: We broadly know how today will go, because - tragically - we have plenty of previous examples from this gov't.
1. Grovelling apology, with a lot of faux-distress, looking to the floor and huffing.
2. No 10 will attempt to minimise the report, say "we know all this".
3. The PM will make a conscious effort to refer to events like they are weather phenomena - just unacceptable things that somehow happened.
4. His proxies will highlight changes already in Downing St and promise more will follow. (Senior sackings may be kept in reserve.)
5. PM will become more bullish during the debate, attack Starmer, and talk about how brilliant he has been at everything else.
6. He will then address Tory MPs in private, from where laughter, banging of desks, and "he had them eating out of his hand" will be reported.
7. This will annoy a few MPs, but probably not enough of them to trigger a vote of no confidence and - almost certainly - not enough of them to lose it.
8. And on the country limps, until the next lie, the next lurid revelation, the next scandal. Rinse. Repeat

Cornettoninja · 25/05/2022 11:03

@DuncinToffee it is depressing.

It’s strange, for years I’ve watched Americans muse on the reason for their country’s zeitgeist and describing a certain mindset that can’t accept they’re on the receiving end of a bum deal (healthcare is a good example). Everyone’s a temporarily embarrassed millionaire because they’ve bought in so deeply to the narrative that in America everyone has an equal opportunity to be self-made financial success. It explains a lot.

There’s something similar happening here with regards to support for this cabinet. JRM, BJ, ND and all their ilk are the same as them. When they’re displaying their contempt, whether it’s for rules, law, economic policy, foreign policy, immigration policy - the list goes on. It’s never aimed at those who think this cabinet is on their side while the rest of us just wait and watch the same people getting screwed over and made to look like mugs wondering where their limit is,

I’m not the first to make this observation, but it’s worth repeating.

Roussette · 25/05/2022 11:03

Absolutely spot on. Duncin

I had heard that there were 3 more letters and it's 45 with 54 needed . No idea if this is true or not.

How worried is Boris Johnson today? I bumped into close ally last night who looked extremely relaxed and suggested they are not worried at all about no confidence letters getting close to threshold- BUT others were defo angry so let’s see
In fact govt source messages to say: “All senior save big dog people think this is all going to be a mega anticlimax and their man is 100% safe.” Source thinks pm is safe but questions if there is some complacency- and thinks a lot of anger means confidence vote wd be closer now

Oh, and colleagues have been briefed by No 10 that Boris Johnson will tell MPs he is "humbled by the whole experience” and “accepts full responsibility” for the Partygate scandal.

DuncinToffee · 25/05/2022 11:30

Thanks Roussette

yellowsuninthesky · 25/05/2022 11:31

The conclusion of the report is: The gatherings within the scope of this investigation are spread over a 20-month period – a period that has been unique in recent times in terms of the complexity and breadth of the demands on public servants and indeed the general public. The whole of the country rose to the challenge. Ministers, special advisers and the Civil Service, of which I am proud to be a part, were a key and dedicated part of that national effort. However, as I have noted, a number of these gatherings should not have been allowed to take place or to develop in the way that they did. There is significant learning to be drawn from these events which must be addressed immediately across Government. This does not need to wait for the police investigations to be concluded.

I don't think this is the full report, not sure. My DD sent me the link. There are no pics in it

Words, specifically his words, are cheap.

to state the obvious, but I don’t buy into the idea that he’s some sort of messiah and the only person in the tories or indeed parliament capable of filling the office of prime minister during the current economic crisis (that the cabinet were warned about pre-Ukraine), navigating the Northern Ireland protocol or representing the UK internationally regarding their invasion by Russia. It’s gobsmacking that anyone seriously thinks there’s no-one else.

I'm finding it vaguely amusing that Sue Gray hasn't handed over the report yet - she's messing with the carefully planned timings.
They are so desperate to get it out and done so they can announce the (sudden) cost of living help.
I told DH last night if I were SG I'd hang on to the report until Thursday and let it fester over recess.

This is interesting.

Boris committed as part of the Sue Gray report to tell her about all the parties. I thought at the time this was foolish, because there was more than likely some party that the public was not yet aware of that someone (Cummings) was keeping the evidence for, for their own purposes. We saw that a little with the photos that have already been released this week.
Maybe all of a sudden this talk WTF means there is a whole load more to investigate.

DuncinToffee · 25/05/2022 11:37

It's only 12 pages, can't be 25 pages of photos surely?

Roussette · 25/05/2022 11:38

Please go with @yellowsuninthesky link. Not mine. Apparently the whatsapp messages are gobsmacking. And they invited 200 to one of the parties Shock
