I’m going to a Catholic Church on Sunday. Is there anything I need to be aware of?

Support Worker, taking one of my peeps for the first time.

I’ve not been into a Catholic Church before and don’t want to offend anyone or make any faux pas.

Is there a dress code? Anything else I need to be aware of?

Thank you!

Also, for the love of God do not make eye contact with anyone during the offertory! Head completely down, otherwise you might get picked upon to go and take it up to the altar.

I spent my whole childhood perfecting the art of not getting picked to do the offertory!

This thread has made me want to go back to church 😨I've got way too much Catholic guilt I'd have to deal with first though.

Three Hail Marys and a Glory Be and you'll be good to go Halo

If you aren't elderly or disabled OP, it's extreme rude to sit whilst others are kneeling and people will look

how will they know? i don't look disabled but I have trashed my knees and its painful to kneel and impossible to get up again.

Don't worry about anything. It's easy to follow the ups and downs if you want to, but you could just sit if you preferred. Is the person you're taking known at the church?

You obviously went to a very disorganised church. That was always organised in advance if it was the full blown march up the aisle job but a regular mass only involved the altar boys picking it up from the table and bringing it over to the priest. I think they do it themselves these days due to the shortage of altar boys.

Literally about 3 people will kneel.
Some of these answers are bonkers and seem like they are on a wind up.

TheFallenMadonna · 13/05/2022 19:12

If you're glaring at somebody sitting instead if kneeling you are both being rude yourself and not keeping your mind on the main event.

@NeverDropYourMooncup - Technically, a child receiving RC communion after a CofE (for example) Baptism is now Catholic, although they've just had their FHC without the fancy frock and party.

I don't think so, unless they believe in all the transubstaniation stuff. Taking communion is partly to show you are in communion with the teachings of the Catholic Church so a protestant child would not be in communion with those. Baptism into a related church isn't enough.

Love your username by the way. I assume it is the voice of sad experience?

It's a known thing, backed up by Canon Law - proven by the fact that a child baptised in the CofE/etc who then takes FHC is regarded as Catholic for such things as assessing school applications - the admissions criteria for RC schools are set with regard to Canon Law.

I'm C of E but do work in a Catholic institution. Just remember they don't say the last bit of The Lord's Prayer. Catches me out loads Grin

As with most Churches, I'm sure you'll be made welcome, especially if you mention to someone as you come in that you're visiting. You could give the priest a call in advance if you have specific requirements or questions.

On your way in (to any church) find out if you need to pick up any books/orders of service. Some will project everything, some still use books.

Bring whatever you need for your friend, including quiet snacks if helpful. I go with our kids and they always have colouring, pencils and a clipboard to keep them occupied without making too much noise.

Reminds me of my Catholic SIL asking me 'What do Protestants actually DO at Christmas???' '

😂😂🙄

Sacrifice the Catholics for fun, I replied

I've been to one Catholic funeral and at the end I think there was a lot of "May God be with you" when shaking hands.

Needtogetoffmyphone · 13/05/2022 20:02

@lameasahorse
i think you’re right.
I’ve gone less often recently, and tend to watch on zoom - but I don’t recognise these practices in the Churches I go to - not even the Cathedral (although that does tend to be on the long side)

hellrabbitishere · 13/05/2022 20:06

when dd was still little i used to take her to our local catholic church accross the road from us and theres nothing to worry about at all , ours was really traditional ,but you just dress normally , you will know when they take communion as everyone will start to file up to the front by the alter , at ours you just kneel down in front of the priest and put your head down as if bowing if you werent taking communion and then the priest will bless you instead , theres really nothing complicated about it , and the other parishioners will i should think be helpfull if you get stuck on finding the relevent hymn , that can sometimes take a bit of getting used to the first few times , but other than that its simple

Yes! My mum goes to Mass daily, but has increased her candle lighting to the extent it's practically a pyre, in support of my DD, who is really not suitably grateful!

The assumption would be that the child had been indoctrinated into the Catholic belief system before making fhc. The rule is no communion, except in extreme circumstances, unless you are in communion with the Catholic belief system. There's loads of prep for fhc so a random child wandering up for a snack would not be considered to have made their fhc as they would not have been in communion with the faith.

My brother always felt it was most unfair. If he did well, it was thanks to God. If he did badly, it was his fault.

That's shocking! How many times? I've only ever ever seen it go round during the offertory

Okay, I'm back from Holy Catholic Ireland to clarify!

There is no collection on weekdays/Saturdays.

There is one collection on Sunday. There may be a second collection for special purposes once every six weeks or so - such as helping to educate young men for the priesthood or Peter's Pence - money goes to Rome for the upkeep of the Vatican etc.

There may be a church gate collection on Sunday. This is outside the grounds of the church by third party organisations - mostly charities or voluntary organisations like scouting or pipe bands. There is no obligation to donate, just give if you would donate to them at a normal street collection. Mostly they are just chancers taking advantage of the generosity of people filtering through a gate or doorway.

Hoolahulahoop · 13/05/2022 20:26

We go to mass weekly. There should be a leaflet handed out with the readings. First and second readings. Lots of standing up and down and kneeling. Just follow the person in front.

The gospel and communion (just bring your person up and cross your arms yourself).

Hymnes

No shaking hands now. We wave 👋👋👋
Might be nice after mass to light a candle (you put money in the box)

EXACTLY! Same in our house. Your posts are really entertaining me Ochon

Well, no ... we don't see it as cutting off a bit of the Protestant one, we see it that we say the Catholic version!
I go to lots of CoI ceremonies too, and easily remember to say their prayer, rather than the Catholic Our Father

do children have to go to confession before first holy communion.
is it regarded as a practice run for when adult responsibility kicks in.

They make their first confession a week or two before the first communion. We all had the same 3 sins for it. The only one I remember is "I didn't always do what my mammy and daddy told me".
