I’m going to a Catholic Church on Sunday. Is there anything I need to be aware of?

Support Worker, taking one of my peeps for the first time.

I’ve not been into a Catholic Church before and don’t want to offend anyone or make any faux pas.

Is there a dress code? Anything else I need to be aware of?

Thank you!

OP when people are going up to the altar that's for them to get communion .... It's supposed to be the most important parts of mass and isn't really the done thing to leave during that. Mass is literally over ten minutes after communion so maybe try to stay a wee bit longer next time?

The person I was supporting wanted to leave then.

It’s my job to support her, not force her to stay when she wanted to leave. It’s her religion, not mine. She makes that decision, not me.

We were near the door. We slipped out quietly.

So sorry I honestly meant to be helpful to the op who isn't familiar with mass and communion. Definitely wasn't intending to be sanctimonious :-(

I don't think anyone is being sanctimonious @Alliswells It's certainly not common at any mass I've been to, to leave.

Great to see all these responses - I am Presbyterian (Church of Scotland) so find Anglican and catholic services equally baffling. My friend had an Anglican wedding and there was just enough similarity to be confusing - same responses but sung not spoken!
Us protestants have communion regularly but not every week - quarterly or monthly depending on the minister. Anyone Christian welcome and even athiests etc.

Perhaps when you go next time, take a copy of the Lords Prayer with you. When in France I cannot remember all the French Lords Prayer so have one with me.

She's not looking to convert to Catholicism. She's supporting a Catholic who needs someone to attend with them. I don't think she needs to learn her linesGrin

It's certainly been my experience that a number of people will always take their leave during communion.

Maybe those who believe it's not normal are up the front whereas those leaving early tend to hang out down the back. Or, as used to be the case of my local church, they get mass while standing outside the pub across the road. Church had a loudspeaker and everything.

Enjoy some spirits with your Holy Spirit so to speak!

That would have been a great strapline for Power's back in the day. Although no doubt big boss McQuaid would have stepped in and put a stop to that.

People always run out during communion. Not unusual at all

The thread is doing the exact opposite for me! 😂

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 18/05/2022 19:36

I won’t be attempting to recite the Lord’s Prayer. I don’t think that would be appropriate given my situation.
