DCs have been told a nuclear attack is imminent

RedChina · 11/05/2022 22:39

By their 'D'F. I've name changed for obvious reasons.
Is it imminent? ExH thinks so. He hasn't told me but according to DS (6th form student) he has planned to send the DCs to the other side of the world !we are in the UK) to avoid the radiation fallout of a nuclear attack.
It came to light after I overheard a phone conversation/argument between DS & ex H.
I think there are many flaws in the exH plan, DS thinks his DF has gone mad.
Does anyone else know of others making nuclear war plans?

Highly unlikely and really rather cruel to inflict his paranoia on his children.

killerqueue · 11/05/2022 23:56

But ex H is serious, he's made plans. Passport applications, citizenship for the DCs for his adopted country.

But when's he going to move them?

ExMachinaDeus · 11/05/2022 23:58

If he's thinking of Australia, he shouldn't bother. The result of Australia & NZ's treaties with the US and the installation of early warning systems at US bases (on Australian soil!) such as a t Pine Gap., mean that in a MAD scenario, Australia would be knocked out first by Russia, because of the early warning tracking systems installed there.

The joys of living in Australia during the Cold War ...

When was your children's father born? People born after 1989 and die Wende have no idea really about living with a nuclear threat ...

RedChina · 11/05/2022 23:58

It is cruel. My 11yo told me last week in detail the effects of radiation on an individual based on how many miles away they were from a nuclear bomb. I can guess who told him now.

Pythonesque · 11/05/2022 23:59

If he's planning on sending them there, how does he propose they will live / work / study etc once they get there? There is a tiny bit of merit in saying, maybe a move further away from trouble is worth it - but only if it allows you to continue a reasonably normal life after that move. Is his plan just about getting them out there or is there some rational "what next?" to what he proposes?

I say that perhaps mainly to try to understand the best way to handle things, although it sounds like your children are old enough to be managing a lot of that themselves.

A sixth former would be pretty badly served trying to switch education systems unless things were truly imminent!

And it's very hard to envisage Australia staying a safe zone for long :(

dreamingbohemian · 12/05/2022 00:00

Where is your son's UK passport right now? If you hide it he can't leave the country.

RedChina · 12/05/2022 00:01

DCs father was born in the 50s.

OP posts:
ExMachinaDeus · 12/05/2022 00:02

So last year agreed to the citizenship as I thought it would give the DCs more opportunities etc

Again, if this is Australia @RedChina be really careful. Australian Family Law pretty much requires children with Australian citizenship to live there ie. if your ex took them there, and then didn't return them, the Family Law court is as likely to support him as not.

Just be careful.

ThreeFeetTall · 12/05/2022 00:09

Has he never read On The Beach? That booked scared the bejesus out of me. I think it'll stick here in London and take what comes rather than going to Australia.

Fraaahnces · 12/05/2022 00:29

I’m in Australia… If it helps, the conspiracy whackoes are all talking about how Russia has bagsed the Northern Hemisphere and China the southern one. Look up “China ring fencing the world with military bases” and you’ll see what I mean. If you send him that info via eldest child, maybe that will nip it in the bud… Also explain to all of your kids that if he were to take them out of the Uk without your permission, Daddy would go to jail. (He would be deported back to UK anyway.)

GreySquirrrel · 12/05/2022 00:35

Are you sure he’s not using this as an excuse to take them out of the country OP?

TheCatterall · 12/05/2022 00:43

Do you not feel your children are more at risk from their father right now then nuclear war…

I wouldn’t want my children going anywhere at the behest of this twerp.

WeDoNotTalktoPennilynLott · 12/05/2022 00:46

Windbeneathmybingowings · 11/05/2022 22:55

He’s ridiculous. Mostly because the London Underground offers about the same protection as a nuclear bunker and it’s the price of an Oyster card, let alone passport applications and flights.

hope he’s paid for fast track! Hahahahaha

Disclaimer- Other parts of the UK outside of London do exist...

NumberTheory · 12/05/2022 01:14

I think there are scenarios that are not likely but are possibilities now when they weren't really a year ago, where having dual citizenship with Australia could be a good plan.

If the Ukranian-Russian war spreads there could be a limited nuclear exchange within Europe. That could make large parts of Europe uninhabitable, or unhealthy to live in and would trigger mass migration. Having dual citizenship somewhere like Australia in that scenario could be incredibly valuable, even life saving.

Putin has been talking up the nuclear threat but his actions have, for the most part, been very restrained regarding the rest of Europe. He could have done a lot more in retaliation that he simply hasn't. So I don't think we're headed that way. But it's a volatile situation and we really don't know.

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 12/05/2022 02:31

I met a man today who said he predicted the start date of the Russia/Ukraine war. Apparently nuclear war is happening on the 3rd of October…. You’ve been warned!
A friend of mine has emergency bags packed already with food, water purification tablets, various equipment etc Enough for their family for a few weeks.

That's what I was going to ask too! 😁

Fizzyfish · 12/05/2022 05:13

Oh ffs no one will be nuking anyone 🙄

Fraaahnces · 12/05/2022 05:37

@MagnoliatheMagnificent Was hé this guy?

DCs have been told a nuclear attack is imminent
pollyglot · 12/05/2022 05:49

Now taking bookings for our patch of paradise in the subtropical Far North of New Zealand. Sunshine, fresh air, self-sufficiency, all the citrus fruit and veges you can eat.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 12/05/2022 06:16

It’s a ploy to get the kids. Why did you let him have birth certs etc? If they have nationality and passports, they are gone.

Blackbird2020 · 12/05/2022 06:19

You can tell he isn’t thinking straight. If anyone wants to actually act on his paranoia the kids can just fly in on tourist visas - free, available online within hours and last 12 months (if they have U.K. passports). Once there they can sort their passports etc.

If he’s going to wait until it’s obvious to the rest of the world, then the only thing that would help is hard cash, lots of it, to get that last seat on that last flight out of the U.K… They already have Australian citizenship, and if they have any passport (which would act as their travel documents) then they can get in on the strength of their citizenship papers at the Oz borders.

Honestly, he’s overthinking it 😂

StooOrangeyForCrows · 12/05/2022 06:19

I would put the brakes on this for the obvious reasons and also do something about your ex having access to the DC - seriously.

If there was a nuclear strike those that didn't die in the first wave would die of radiation later or failing that radiated food or then lack of food but more worrying is the effect on the kids long term.
My DMum had MH problems and she told us kids all about the A bomb and the H bomb. She didn't hold back about any subject actually and it's messed me up. Like a PP I have always had 'nuclear' dreams especially if I am stressed and it has been a background fear my entire life when it didn't need to be.
Speak to your ex and tell him to knock it off. It's not fair on the DC but to be honest the damage has probably already been done. He sounds bloody toxic to be honest. He's the problem.

Blackbird2020 · 12/05/2022 06:23

As aside, the Australian embassy or consulate that processes the passport applications will call you to ask you a series of questions in order to satisfy their requirement that BOTH parents are happy for the children to obtain their Australian passports. It’s standard safeguarding for under 18s.

Icantfindtherightshoe · 12/05/2022 06:26

The fact you came on here to Mumsnet to tell everyone your exh wants to take the kids to another country because of a nuclear attack that's not going to happen. And you're not doing anything is making alarm bells ring in my head

He sounds unhinged, keep your kids safe and tell him under no circumstances is he sending them away. Heck send the police to him if you must, just keep your kids safe

I think that's pretty important information. I would tell them he's a flight risk and block getting the passports issued. Your kids can get them when they're adults if they want them.
