I have just found out that the "sticky backed plastic" on Blue Peter was actually "sellotape" but they werent allowed to advertise it. How did I not know this?🤔

That your brain shrinks when you sleep over night and you have a brain wash with fluid that flushes out toxics 🤯

Right just stop now! 😂

thecurtainsofdestiny · 11/05/2022 16:12

That the name "Eeyore" in Winnie the Pooh comes from the donkey sound "Ee- aw". They don't sound the same in my accent. Husband hadn't realised this either.

That the word "realtor" comes from "real estate agent". I only found this out in the last week!

Right just stop now! 😂

😂 Please just Google

Let your mind be blown like mine was 😂

PoseyFlump · 11/05/2022 16:22

@Electriq 😂 I'm going to be googling all these!! Especially the disturbing ones. Although when I think about it, a self cleaning brain sounds pretty cool 🤔

Oh and the fact that some stars you can see don't exist anymore!

I like that one

The limbs thing is obvious, it's just that people very rarely consider it. Most people have 4 limbs (2 arms & 2 legs), a significant minority of people have lost one or more limbs, or been born without. Hardly anyone has more than 4 (very rare birth defect). Therefore the mean number of limbs per person is less than 4, but most people have 4. So most people have an above average amount.

I read somewhere (perhaps on a previous MN thread) that technically it's the opposite of heartbeats. Most people only have one heart beating inside them, but pregnant women have two (theirs and the unborn baby's)... so the mean number of hearts inside living humans is actually more than one.

That percentages can be inversed. So 68% of 50 is the same as 50% of 68. DS came home with that last week.

Really useful!

MuMMA8 · 11/05/2022 16:33

I have met a lot of grown adults that did not know raisins were dried up grapes 🍇

🤯

JennyWreny · 11/05/2022 16:33

Read this on a similar thread a while ago -

John Tyler, the 10th US President, was born in 1790. One of his grandsons (Harrison Ruffin Tyler) is still alive.

That the shape of a city affects how much rainfall it experiences
(reported in New Scientist this week)

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 11/05/2022 16:48

@VintageGibbon a kidney transplant is just a simple plumbing job as my mums consultant told me pop a new one in hook it up and tada! No need to remove the old one

That Igglepiggle is forever doomed to sail across the ocean in his little boat and only when he sleeps and dreams does he see his friends, otherwise he is all alone for all eternity.
I may or may not have cried more than a little bit when I clocked this…

@ChiefPearlClutcher you’ve just made a very heavily pregnant woman cry, I hope you’re happy with yourself!!

(Actually I wouldn’t worry, it hasn’t taken much since 38 weeks!)

Ironoaks · 11/05/2022 16:51

"A circular city shows nearly 22.0% larger rainfall accumulation and 78.6% greater rainfall intensity compared to a triangular city over urban surfaces."

I'm 40+ and have only recently learned that the stealth bomber is only invisible to radar, not actually invisible.

I'm actually really disappointed Smile

Hahaha! That’s amazing!!! I just learnt that sticky backed plastic WASN’T sellotape. Apparently it’s big sheets of plastic…

That the sun doesn't actually move further away from the earth in winter and closer to it in summer

The sun doesn’t move at all. 🤦🏻‍♀️

JerkintheMerkin · 11/05/2022 17:03

@tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz that really made me laugh out loud. Thanks for that 🤣🤣

ZeroFuchsGiven · 11/05/2022 17:04

My mind was blown when I found out sloths can swim, I just couldn't picture it!

Not only that but they are amazing swimmers and can hold their breath under water for over 40 minutes.

Every atom in your body came from a star that exploded, and the atoms in your left hand probably came from a different star than your right hand

My mind was blown when at the ripe old age of 25 I realised the song I used to sing "one ton tomato" was actually "Guantanamera" Grin

I had lived near Paisley for a number of years before I put two and two together and realised that the town of Paisley, and it’s fabric mills, might have something to do with Paisley pattern fabric.

Along similar lines, the water we have today is the same water that’s been there since then.
