Have your dc got great grandparents still alive?

I was lucky enough to be able to choose to have my eldest dc fairly young. DH was 13 when his last great grandparent died. My DS1 is now nearly 16 with one great grandparent still alive. I think this is amazing as all my great grandparents died before I was born and by the time I was DS1's age I only had 1 grandparent still alive. Just wondering if anyone else or their dc still have/had great grandparents still alive when they were older than 15?

Yes, 4 until last year. 2 now sadly. All on my side, none on DHs. My eldest child is 7 though and I don’t think the remaining 2 great grandparents have 8 more years in them til he’s 15!

I’m the child of 2 oldest children so that goes some way to explain it!

Three of dd's 8 great grandparents died when I was pregnant. Two more died before she was two. The other three died many years before.

At age 25 she still has 4 grandparents.

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 10/05/2022 16:05

My dc are 17 and 15 and still have 2 great-grandparents. They had 4 when they were born. They are very lucky.

My step dads mum is also still alive, but they don't refer to her as a great grandma, she's just "Grandpa's Mummy"

My oldest grandchild is 12, and has two great-grannies on his father's side. There's a fair to middling chance that at least one will still be alive and well when he turns 16, by which time she will be 92. The other is more frail.

MolliciousIntent · 10/05/2022 16:07

Yes, my DDs have 4, all on my side. DH hasn't had grandparents for almost a decade.

TeenPlusCat · 10/05/2022 16:08

My DC's GGPs were mainly born in the 19th Century.
So no.

DowntonCrabby · 10/05/2022 16:08

Yes, they are very lucky to have all 4 still alive, healthy and an active part of their lives.

DH is 40 and we’re lucky enough to still have his DGM in her 90’s living a great life.

My eldest are 13 with one amazing Great Nanny. Our niece is 23 with the same GN!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 10/05/2022 16:11

They had who died when they were 6and 8.

I only had two living grandparents, the last of whom passed away when I was 20.
DH lost 3 of his in his late teens/early 20s.

Part of our decision of having our children relatively young is wanting them to know their grandparents. The generations in my family were very spread out... both my grandmothers had my mother/father in their 30s and they were the eldest child. Then my parents did similar. I was 25!

Fifthtimelucky · 10/05/2022 16:14

My children never knew their great grandparents. Nor did my husband or I.

Three of my grandparents lived well into their 90s but the last one still died well before my first child was born.

ShadowPuppets · 10/05/2022 16:18

I’d lost all my grandparents by the time I was 21, which was a decade before I had my first DC. DH lost his last grandparent about 8 months after DC1 was born, and very sadly due to lockdown they never got to meet.

I had one great grandmother until I was about 9 but that was more due to her prodigious longevity - my dad was nearly 50 when she died which I think it’s insanely old to have still had a grandparent around!

ReadyToMoveIt · 10/05/2022 16:23

Mine have one great grandparent still alive, my maternal grandmother, she’s 90. My maternal grandfather died when my eldest was a baby, and my 2 paternal grandparents died when I was a child.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 10/05/2022 16:26

My grandad died at the age of 91 in 2020 when I was 50. My other Grandad died when I was 3 months old and I have just one photo of him holding me as a new born.

MrsMoggy · 10/05/2022 16:28

I had a great Nan left myself until my early twenties, she died aged 97. My 10 year old has two great grandmas still alive and well, one is 79 and the other 81

CMOTDibbler · 10/05/2022 16:28

No, the only GGP alive when ds was born died when he was under 1, and at 15 he only has one grandparent left, let alone GGP. All of my GGP were long dead when I was born

mamatoTails · 10/05/2022 16:29

Yes.
Our eldest is 14, and still has one great grandparent. He did have 2 more up until the last 12-18 months.

Danikm151 · 10/05/2022 16:32

2 great grandmother's for my son and he's 2. My nan's youngest great grandchild is 12 and she's 82 so pretty good going.

EsmeeMerlin · 10/05/2022 16:33

I had two great nans until my early 20s. Both great grandads died when I was a baby. My children have a set of great grandparents on their dad's side and then a set on my side. My nan is a great grandmother to 5 and is in her late 60s. We are a very young family though, everyone has had at least one child in their early 20s and my nan herself had my mum at 18.

2pinkginsplease · 10/05/2022 16:34

My children have just lost their last great grandparent last month. My gran was 98 and my children were 20 and 18.

Her eldest great-grandchild was 24.

Thekormachameleon · 10/05/2022 16:34

Da is almost 19 and has two great grandparents. I repeatedly remind him how lucky he is

StuckInTheMiddleOfNowhere · 10/05/2022 16:35

Not on my side my nan passed last year. But they did all meet her. 2 remember her.

On dh side they still have 2 great nans and 2 great grandad. The other great grandad passed 2 years ago.

I never met any of my own grandfathers or great grandfathers. But did my great grandmother's. I also never met any grandad as passed when my parents were young, just both nans. One i was very very close to

BlimBosh · 10/05/2022 16:37

All my own grandparents died before I was 10 years old. So nope, they never knew any of them.

familyissues12345 · 10/05/2022 16:37

DS's were 6 & 11 when they lost their great grandparents (within 3 weeks of each other)

WithASpider · 10/05/2022 16:37

We lost our last GGM last January when DD1 was just 17. My DC have been very lucky to know 3 of their GGP, all on my side.
DH lost all his GP by the time he was 12.

sjxoxo · 10/05/2022 16:37

I am 35 and lost 2 out of my 4 grandparents last year- to still have 4 that long was amazing. So DS has two GGP still alive. I find it amazing to think they were born in the late 1920’s!!! Xx
