Have your dc got great grandparents still alive?

I was lucky enough to be able to choose to have my eldest dc fairly young. DH was 13 when his last great grandparent died. My DS1 is now nearly 16 with one great grandparent still alive. I think this is amazing as all my great grandparents died before I was born and by the time I was DS1's age I only had 1 grandparent still alive. Just wondering if anyone else or their dc still have/had great grandparents still alive when they were older than 15?

DD is only 4 but has two great grandmothers. My great grandad died when I was about 12 and he was 99- was fascinating to hear about all the history he lived through!

Yes, I had my dc very young. My nan and grandad were amazing and had my dc every Thursday night during the primary years until my nan got cancer. She recovered. My grandad died when they were yr 3/4 and my nan continued to have them. They have a lovely close relationship now, until my nans dog recently passed they would go over there a 2x a week to walk the dog and help my nan with bits of housework she couldn't manage like changing her bed and vacuuming upstairs.

They have another set on my mums side who they see a couple of times a year.

DS1 met his great grandfather who then died when he was six months old (in his 90s). On both sides our grandparents were born between 1900 and 1922 so (even though several made it into their 90s) we sadly don’t have any left (DSs are 9 and 6).

tootiredtospeak · 10/05/2022 19:04

Yes both my Grandparents are alive and I have 3 DC so they are their great grandparents. They are 83 and 88 so not sure how much longer they will be alive for.

MrsStrongman · 10/05/2022 19:08

My last great grandparent died last year shortly after their 100th birthday, I’m 30. My 2 children have 2 great grandparents (one has 8 year old twins 😬), so hopefully they’ll be around for a while yet!

ApresSailingQueen1 · 10/05/2022 19:09

My Gps died before I was 16. DH's died before he was 10 (His grandparents were born in the 1890s and had their DD in their 30s and he was born in her 40s! )

So no great GPs for either of us.

But my line manager was 35 when her GD was born and her mum was still alive (and still is as far as I know). Line manager had her DS when she was 19 and he had his first child at 15.

My gran st 102 has 18 great grandchildren oldest 31

Iheartmysmart · 10/05/2022 19:14

DS is 20 and he has three living grandparents and one great grandparent. Considering I didn’t have him until I was 35 that’s not bad. Sadly his paternal grandad didn’t live long enough to ever meet him.

Bumply · 10/05/2022 19:14

I'm a great great aunt (at almost 60) as I'm the youngest of 6 and my sister is 11 years older than me and had children who had children who had children.
I didn't have my two boys until I was 35 and 39 so if they take their time I might not even live to see my grand children.

clareykb · 10/05/2022 19:17

I knew 3 of my great grandparents. My last great grandma died aged 98 when I was in my 20s. My Gran is 90 and still going strong so my kids have one ggp

bloodyplanes · 10/05/2022 19:17

My Dc have have all four grandparents, one great grandparent and my dgc has her great great grandparent.

Littleroundsponge · 10/05/2022 19:18

DS is 13 and still has one Great Grandad left.

BlackeyedSusan · 10/05/2022 19:20

No my grandmother is a Victorian born before the turn of the last century

CormoranStrike · 10/05/2022 19:21

No, even two of their grandparents were dead before they were born, and one more soon after.

I don’t know anyone with great grandparents!

BlackeyedSusan · 10/05/2022 19:22

And my mother is in her nineties. They only have one grandparent left . I only had one grandparent alive when I was born. We are the opposite.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 10/05/2022 19:23

My dc had one, until few years ago.

rainbowandglitter · 10/05/2022 19:23

I have a great grandparent alive and I'm 40 this year so ds12 has a great great grandparent alive

SomersetONeil · 10/05/2022 19:23

I find this absolutely boggling.

I’m 48. My great-grandmother signed the petition for women’s suffrage in New Zealand. In 1893.

So, no. None of my DC’s great-grandparents are still alive.

Three of my own grandparents had died before I was even born. The daughter of my GGM mentioned above died well before I was born, in the 1950s when my Dad was only 17.

My Mum died when I was 29, and my Dad died when DC1 was 6.

britneyisfree · 10/05/2022 19:27

Yes. Mine has one luckily for her. She had a great great too but she passed the year she was born. I'm sure she held out for me to have my first child. It sounds ridiculous but if you knew her you'd understand.

I had such a wonderful relationship with my great grandmother (I was the first born of her first and favourite grandchild so lots of special treatment!) so I'm grateful my daughter has hers although sadly I don't think there relationship will be the same as what I had due to the sheer volume of grandchildren my grandmother has and also location.

britneyisfree · 10/05/2022 19:28

Sorry didn't read the full post Blush my kid is only two 😂😂

My great grandmother lived until I was in my 30s died during lockdown.

Dudds · 10/05/2022 19:30

My children are 9 and 18. My paternal grandparents are still going strong at 86 and 92 (I'm 43)

hotmess19 · 10/05/2022 19:32

My son, 3, has 4 great-grandparents alive all on my side and a great-great grandparent.

Dreamstosell · 10/05/2022 19:32

Mine never knew their great grandparents and unfortunately by 16 didn’t even have any grandparents

Dudds · 10/05/2022 19:33

My children also have 6 sets of great Aunt's and uncles. Youngest great uncle is 8 years older than me (51), eldest great aunt is only 68.
