Have your dc got great grandparents still alive?

I was lucky enough to be able to choose to have my eldest dc fairly young. DH was 13 when his last great grandparent died. My DS1 is now nearly 16 with one great grandparent still alive. I think this is amazing as all my great grandparents died before I was born and by the time I was DS1's age I only had 1 grandparent still alive. Just wondering if anyone else or their dc still have/had great grandparents still alive when they were older than 15?

3 when she was born, 2 still alive now ♥️

Organictangerine · 10/05/2022 22:46

I was lucky enough to have all my grandparents until I was 24, and 3 until a few weeks ago. Now I have 2 at 30. My gran was only 48 when I was born ♥️ which is lovely and we have a great relationship.

My parents have a DGGS who is 21!
They have 12 DGGC. The youngest being a few months old. They also have a DGGGC who is about 3.
My DP are in their early 80's and my sister who is now a DGGM is not 60 yet!

my 15yo and 11yo only lost their much-loved GGF this year. They still have a great great Aunt from that generation of the family. She's very sprightly and lots of fun - they really enjoy her company.

All on DH's side of the family - MIL had DH when she was 18.

whatdodos · 10/05/2022 22:55

My ex partners 28 and his great grandma is still.alive! So my DS who is 4 has a great great grandma and she still has (most her marbles) and can get around independently.

Titsywoo · 10/05/2022 22:59

Not now but DD17 met her great grandmother on DHs side (she died when DD was 9 months) and my grandad died 6 years ago so both my kids knew him (he lived to 104). I never met any of my great grandparents.

RewildingAmbridge · 10/05/2022 23:00

As of recently only 2 left, was three until my grandfather passed away. I had DS at 34 , my paternal grandparents both died before I was 16 and similar with DH (his dad was a surprise, he had much older siblings and his mum thought she was menopausal rather than pregnant). We have one each left both on maternal side, my grandma (80) and DHs grandfather (82-85 I'm not entirely sure). So DS has two great grandparents now.

We had 5 generations alive for a bit. So my nephew (eldest of the cousins) met his great-great grandmother, my great grandmother.

We are now down to 4 generations so yes DS aged 7 does know his 78 year old great grandmother very well, he sees her daily after school 😂 he keeps her young she says.

I was in my 20's when my GGM died.

My dc had 4 GGPs. Not bad!

My dc are teenagers now and have 4 GPs and no GGPs. But some of their friends have only 1 or 2 GPs.

CoodleMoodle · 10/05/2022 23:05

None here. My last remaining grandparent died about three weeks before DD was born. I was in hospital for the funeral, she was three or four days old. I was 24 when she was born (28 for DS).

I never met any of DH's grandparents, they all died before we met (age 16). He met 3 of mine. I didn't know my maternal grandfather but I had a step-grandfather who died when I was about 5 and I sort of remember him.

Neverplayleapfrogwithaunicorn · 10/05/2022 23:05

My dd is 11 with one great grandmother still alive

Shmithecat2 · 10/05/2022 23:08

Yes, both his great grandma's. We didn't have ds until we were in our 40s but dhs grandma's are both 96 and still living their best lives 😊 One lives with assistance, one still lives by herself! I lost my first grandparent at 16, last one at 23.

Neverplayleapfrogwithaunicorn · 10/05/2022 23:11

My husbands (born late 70s) maternal great grandfather died in 1917

I was born late 70s and all of my 8 great grandparents all died in the 1950s!

FrangipaniBlue · 10/05/2022 23:14

Yes DS has 1 great grandmother.

He's lucky to have had 4 great grandparents and to be able to remember meeting them all. He's 14 and they all passed away within the last 6 years.

Neverplayleapfrogwithaunicorn · 10/05/2022 23:15

Two of my grandparents died before I was born and I lost the other two at age 7 and 13
so I have been grandparentless for 30 years now.

FrangipaniBlue · 10/05/2022 23:18

I was in my 20s when my great grandmother passed away.

It wasn't that long before I had DS so he almost got to meet a great great grandparent!

I have cousins who had children before me so there were definitely 5 generations of my family alive at the same time at one point.

Babdoc · 10/05/2022 23:19

My grandfather died in 1926, and grandmother in 1950, so there’s no way my DC, born in 1989 and 1990 could have met them! Even their grandparents, (my parents) were both dead before my DC started primary school.

TheChosenTwo · 10/05/2022 23:21

I have all my grandparents still at age 37. 2 sets on my dad’s side as both remarried after divorce and my mum’s parents so 6 there.
They have no GGPs on dps side, the ones who were alive when they were born sadly died when the dds were small so they don’t have much in the way of memories of them.

YerAWizardHarry · 10/05/2022 23:21

Yes my 9 year old still has 3 of my 4 grandparents still alive although none of his dads. I would imagine that they will be around for a while to come, they’re 68, 69 and 72, all in good health (with my 69 year old Grandma still working and regularly babysitting grandkids)

To add, my grandma had her eldest at 19, my mum had her eldest at 17 and I had my son at 19 so not really a big surprise!

ChicCroissant · 10/05/2022 23:35

Yes, my teen has a great-grandma now, her great-grandad (other side of the family) was around when she was younger and she remembers him well.

Many great-Aunts and Uncles, to be fair some of my aunts are only about a decade or so older than me so that increases the numbers - I had my DD late in life as well.

Deadringer · 10/05/2022 23:44

I never had grandparents, they all died young, before my parents married. My mum is now a great great grandmother though. She was born in 1926 and is still going, my dad was born in 1906, he died a long time ago. I was looking at a picture of him yesterday and I realised the photo was 110 years old!

Dougalneedsahaircut · 11/05/2022 00:54

I have 4 grandchildren and two grandparents still alive 😁

Ponderingwindow · 11/05/2022 00:57

My 13yo has one, very, very old great grandparent still alive whom she has never met.

LeeMucklowesCurtains · 11/05/2022 07:50

My dds have a great grandmother.

She’d dh grandmother, 96.

Only met my 8 year old twice though and never the 2 year old and she’s a miserable cow and doesn’t like children around.

Nothing to do with her advanced age - MIL has known her for 46 years and said she’s always been a nasty piece of work who hates children being around.
