Was watching an old TOTP earlier when DS17 wandered into the room. The number 1 from that week was Ebeneezer Goode, and I was chatting away about how we all didn't really think it was a great track or anything but still it was funny and fair play, it got to number one. He was listening away doing a little dance and I realized that he hadn't actually got it so I had to spell it out for him.

Frigging kids. Think they're all cool and clever but they don't even clock a bunch of freaks yelling "Es are good" over and over until their old mums in their fifties explain it to them.

Amateurs.

Haha still a good tune, I miss the 90s and totp 😥

DelicateLittleBlossom · 08/05/2022 01:32

Aye, they were good times.

DS tried to trip me up after, like: so did you do drugs then?

Of course not, I said. This record was everywhere, even your gran heard it. It was just funny. He bought it.

Like I said, fucking amateurs.

We watched the totp this evening after dinner, it was from 1997 - this prompted a wild kitchen party of us all playing songs from 1997 and then songs from our birth years, some absolute classics.
dh and I have just retired to bed leaving the younguns downstairs to no doubt play some terrible music - I concur, kids have no idea these days 😂

CrapBucket · 08/05/2022 01:45

Have you ever visited a record shop with a teenager?! Very entertaining!

MardyOldGoth · 08/05/2022 01:47

This really made me laugh and I needed it! Thank you!

Has anyone got any Veras? Laaaahvly!

DelicateLittleBlossom · 08/05/2022 01:52

Aww, I quite like going to record shops with him. I mean I like how it's gone full circle and we're back to flipping through the racks. Gives me hope, you know? I don't like the prices though!

I've had to stop him a few times when he's been about to pay £20 squillion for something and just remind him that we already have it on the shelf at home. (Yes, I kept all my vinyl.)

What was in the charts in 1997? I'm thinking No Doubt, Spice Girls, Natalie Imbruglia, Bjork? Good times 😊

I'm a 90s kid and when that song came out I was too young to understand what it was about. It wasn't until many years later (and I was reflecting on the fact it was a rave scene bk then) that i realised it was about drugs. Still a tune though!

DelicateLittleBlossom · 08/05/2022 02:23

Oh bless you, of course you wouldn't have known at the time if you were a child.

Are you old enough to remember the klf? They were proper anarchist. Thanks to the wonders of time travel TOTP I also re-watched them a few months ago and remembered how cool they were.

Meh. I wouldn't understand half the shit kids chat nowadays so I probably wouldn't feel too smug!

superram · 08/05/2022 02:51

I’m 44 and hadn’t made the connection, I’m so naive…,

CrapBucket · 08/05/2022 09:12

Maybe the KLF were predicting the future about us mumsnetters. I feel justifed and ancient.

Iamtired2022 · 08/05/2022 09:18

I'm 42, love 90s music - and now I know what that song is about! 🤣 ( I was sweet & innocent back then)

DoesItEverEnd · 08/05/2022 09:21

😀

ds dresses like a 90’s raver and loves vintage clothes just like I did at his age but he won’t have any of it apparently it’s all different now 🤔😁

BarbaraofSeville · 08/05/2022 09:24

Grin Maybe you need to find the one with Golden Brown on.

The old TOTPs are great until you realise that the tracks from your youth were 30 years ago.

We went to a Blondie gig a few days ago and I did wonder if the 'young people' on the front row knew they were dancing to music released before they were born being performed by a woman older than their grandmothers.

I listened to a great podcast about the KLF, I wasn't particularly a fan, but they're very much of my time.

But do you drive an ice cream van?

Aaaas if!
They'd swallow a brick wouldn't they 😅

historygeek · 08/05/2022 09:34

My neighbour text me the other morning because she heard the bin man say "naughty naughty, very naughty" about another neighbour that put polystyrene in the garden waste bin 🤣🤣

Puffalicious · 08/05/2022 09:37

I'm laughing hard at this. Amateurs 🤣.

DS17 and DS15 regularly join us for TOTP2 late at night and we indulge in some dancing. DS17 is really pissed off that there will NEVER be the late 80s or 90s again. He wants to be 17 year old me in 1989 sitting in a line of cars waiting for the phone call to a phone box to state where the illegal rave was😅

Phos · 08/05/2022 09:39

To be fair, I was about 8 when that came out so I grew up knowing it and it was years before I figured it out.

Phos · 08/05/2022 09:41

@BarbaraofSeville you're so right about tracks from your youth. I was enjoying Smooth by Santana in the car yesterday and realised with horror it's now 22 years old.
