Was watching an old TOTP earlier when DS17 wandered into the room. The number 1 from that week was Ebeneezer Goode, and I was chatting away about how we all didn't really think it was a great track or anything but still it was funny and fair play, it got to number one. He was listening away doing a little dance and I realized that he hadn't actually got it so I had to spell it out for him.

Frigging kids. Think they're all cool and clever but they don't even clock a bunch of freaks yelling "Es are good" over and over until their old mums in their fifties explain it to them.

Amateurs.

I saw someone on TikTok the other day laughing because she’d heard the chain and thought fleetwood Mac were some cool new band. Then was horrified to find out they were “old”

InTheCludgie · 08/05/2022 09:55

Phos Santana's Smooth always reminds of when I got together with DH. He would pick me up in his ancient Ford Escort and we would drive about everywhere, this song was on a cassette in his tape deck along with, weirdly enough, Barbie Girl by Aqua 🤔

AnuSTart · 08/05/2022 09:59

I'm definitely justified and horribly ancient.

Puffalicious · 08/05/2022 09:37

I'm laughing hard at this. Amateurs 🤣.

DS17 and DS15 regularly join us for TOTP2 late at night and we indulge in some dancing. DS17 is really pissed off that there will NEVER be the late 80s or 90s again. He wants to be 17 year old me in 1989 sitting in a line of cars waiting for the phone call to a phone box to state where the illegal rave was😅

@Puffalicious - Google 'in search of Repetitive Beats' and make sure you book to experience it. I think you would love it.

A few years ago I went to a DJ dance night with a pretty big name headlining, my friends and I were noticeably the oldest there by about 20 years 😂it was a good night although I was very out of touch with what was "in" at that time...but I noticed the one track the crowd went completely and utterly wild for was when a dance mix of "Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This" by the Eurythmics came on. Screaming with delight, hands in the air, jumping and hugging their friends etc etc....I felt like a complete old fogey as I'm very much old enough to remember the original.

I remember Stevie Nicks "Edge of 17" came on the radio at work and the comment 2I prefer the original by Destiny's Child" was made by one of the youngest members of the team...I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

TimBoothseyes · 08/05/2022 10:36

That 2 should have been " sorry.

Amandasummers · 08/05/2022 10:47

I dropped my son off to meet friends yesterday, he saw one of them a way ahead and wanted to catch up to him, I said "call him"...his response? "I don't have his number" 🤦‍♀️

whataloadabullocks · 08/05/2022 10:47

The Orb, Enigma, the Cranberries all fab bands

NightmareSlashDelightful · 08/05/2022 10:47

To be fair to your DS though there was kind of a cultural context to that track, which meant people like you and I who were around at the time cued into the play on words immediately. Ecstasy/rave culture is totally different now - if it even exists at all - so the codes and references are all different.

FionnulaTheCooler · 08/05/2022 10:56

There's a remix of a Mariah Carey song in the charts just now that I hear on the radio, the first time I heard it I remember thinking that surely the original wasn't out that long ago but nope, it was released in 1995. 90s stuff is definitely making a resurgence just now, Primark had Spice Girls t shirts on sale the other day but my preteen daughter refused to let me buy her one, or one of those tartan miniskirts like Cher wears in Clueless.

Mischance · 08/05/2022 10:58

I hesitate to suggest any suitably outlandish names on the grounds that you can bet your life someone will arrive on here telling me that is their son's name !!! Smile

Retrievemysanity · 08/05/2022 11:05

As a very naive and innocent teen in the 90’s, I had no idea why my form teacher looked shocked and horrified when I came into the classroom one day belting out E’s are good! Mortified when the lad I secretly fancied told me whilst sniggering. Things are no better now that I’m 40 and thought Cake by the Ocean sounded a nice way to start the day until I read on t’internet it meant sex on the beach ☹️

Maybe the KLF were predicting the future about us mumsnetters. I feel justifed and ancient.

🤣🤣

SnowyPetals · 08/05/2022 11:17

My teenage DC were scared of the Firestarter video! It was "mum, they had seriously weird music in your day" 😂 😂

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 08/05/2022 11:26

Don't show him Windowlicker by Aphex Twin, then 😂

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 08/05/2022 11:26

THEM!!!

Oblomov22 · 08/05/2022 11:34

Amateurs Grin

Zilla1 · 08/05/2022 12:15

To be fair, it must be difficult not to have anything to rebel against (for a generation it might be a little like Saffy with Edina as a mother) and to have all the great music there, filtered through 'that's from tiktok'. And to think modern awful covers are the originals.

Zilla1 · 08/05/2022 12:17

And don't get me started on that modern rubbish... from the 90s.

Itwasntmeright · 08/05/2022 12:28

I always joke to my DS that our generation, and the generations of kids before us, liked to try and shock our parents, but we just roll our eyes at kids nowadays because they are so boring. Their pop music is shite and it all sounds the same, and I’m not just saying that because I’m old. They’re all such wet boring fragile little wimps, what have we created?

Oh Firestarter! Such a tune. Must admit I was scared of the video. I was 9 and first heard it watching totp when it hit no1. Absolutely love it now <runs to youtube>

Zilla1 · 08/05/2022 13:04

Perhaps don't show them the Arthur Brown Fire video then.

DelicateLittleBlossom · 08/05/2022 13:43

Lol, firestarter. I used to amuse myself by shaping then-toddler DS's hair into horns when he was in the bath, and sometimes I'd sing the song to him. There are a couple of photos of him looking like this. When he saw the video recently he was all, I can't believe you did that, this is not appropriate for babies. It's not like I showed him it back then! Snowflake. ❄️

I went to the Prodigy at Battersea Power Station and met Keith. Utterly charming man. Very sweet and polite!

It was all an act Grin
