Was watching an old TOTP earlier when DS17 wandered into the room. The number 1 from that week was Ebeneezer Goode, and I was chatting away about how we all didn't really think it was a great track or anything but still it was funny and fair play, it got to number one. He was listening away doing a little dance and I realized that he hadn't actually got it so I had to spell it out for him.

Frigging kids. Think they're all cool and clever but they don't even clock a bunch of freaks yelling "Es are good" over and over until their old mums in their fifties explain it to them.

Amateurs.

When that song came out I was 4th year high school and the government were doing some big anti drug propaganda thing. I remember my form teacher jumping on a desk and tearing the letter with his teeth singing eez are good. Happy days.

Ooooh. KLF. I watched that episode where the performed last train to trans central with the 12 year old. Did all the actions for him, he asked me if this was what a mental break looked like. I then told him that they were my religious leaders, I entered into the people of K cult whilst fucked out of my face in a tent in the middle of a field. Didn't tell him the last bit though. Lol.

As a very naive and innocent teen in the 90’s, I had no idea why my form teacher looked shocked and horrified when I came into the classroom one day belting out E’s are good! Mortified when the lad I secretly fancied told me whilst sniggering. Things are no better now that I’m 40 and thought Cake by the Ocean sounded a nice way to start the day until I read on t’internet it meant sex on the beach ☹️

I didn't think of that either but I haven't listened to the lyrics.

there was an MNer who said the 1975 "It's not living" was an insipid love song, didn't realise it was about drugs.

are Es called Molly now?

I love this!

Ha! DS was listening to something by General Levy a few days ago. I commented that I like the song. DS rolled his eyes. I pointed out General Levy is the same age as me and has been around for quite some time 😂.

CottonSock · 08/05/2022 16:05

I'm 43 and also didn't have a clue what its about. Oh dear

WhatIsThisPlease · 08/05/2022 16:14

I'm 48 and feel really stupid now 😂😂

I remember Stevie Nicks "Edge of 17" came on the radio at work and the comment 2I prefer the original by Destiny's Child" was made by one of the youngest members of the team...I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

My 16 year old asked me if I had heard of the band Nirvana?! Ummm yes I have Nirvana T-shirt’s older than you!

LittleMy77 · 08/05/2022 16:21

@EmmaH2022 yes, and they think they’re being cool and that no old gimmers will know! I caught DSD talking about it and she realised I knew what she meant Grin

I then horrified them by telling my tales of clubbing in Ibiza, and my ex partner and his ma doing an opening set for Paul Van Dyk in London

they were like “you! You went to Ibiza?! Clubbing?!”

Oh I don't know, I reckon bands like the 1975 have a lot of old gimmer fans?

@LidlCinnamonBun reminds me of when one of my DC had this conversation:
DC1: "Have you ever heard of a band called Nirvana?"
DC2: "Yeah, they're from the olden days. I think they wore disgusting old cardigans and didn't wash"
😂😂

LidlCinnamonBun · 08/05/2022 18:21

To be fair that describes Kurt Cobain but he was a handsome guy despite that 😬

Zilla1 · 08/05/2022 18:42

one pair of cheap trainers too. Don't want to imagine Nirvana in a more materialist and social media age, endorsing things and hashtags

woodhill · 08/05/2022 19:07

I thought Jilted John was a bit subversive and Up the Junction in the late 70s

Yes enjoyed the 1997 last night - I liked Tubthumping and No Doubt especially

noborisno · 08/05/2022 19:21

Fizzyfish · 08/05/2022 01:09

Haha still a good tune, I miss the 90s and totp 😥

Anybody got any veras?!

(It's a rug reference)

BashfulClam · 08/05/2022 19:35

1997, the year I turned 18, left school and the last time the world made sense to me. I had so much ahead of me…..

elephantoverthehill · 08/05/2022 19:54

I have brought up 2 of my 3 Dcs well. They are both into vinyl and open to many different music choices but when the only album Ds2 had was Squeeze I could have cheerfully strangled him if I heard 'Up the Junction' one more time last summer. A lot of car boot sale purchases helped.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 08/05/2022 20:10

Ha yes , I look at them like this 🙄whenever they try to tell me about vintage bands they've discovered

CrapBucket · 08/05/2022 10:02

@Puffalicious - Google 'in search of Repetitive Beats' and make sure you book to experience it. I think you would love it.

I am going to do this NOW.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 09/05/2022 08:09

There doesn’t seem to be any musical artists that define a generation or pull a huge cultural movement along with them these days, like Nirvana or the Stone Roses or Oasis. I suppose it’s an upshot of music being more fragmented now, with Spotify and TikTok and YouTube.

I can’t imagine people having these conversations in 30 years about Billie Eilish or Lil Nas X.

Zilla1 · 09/05/2022 11:36

Define a generation - Adele, Ed Sheeran, Billie Eilish, no end to the artists this generation can call their own,
