Used to go to lots of concerts/gigs in my younger year, then had dc and not been to one for ages. Say watching my old favourite on you tube and just wondering what’s the best gig/concert you have ever been to and where was it

Anyone seen The Smiths? Would have loved to have seen Johnny Marr and Morrissey on stage together but I was too young. I make do with The Smyths these days Grin

Omg yes I did
The Queen is Dead Tour, I believe it was the last but one gig they played.

I was 17.

It's a toss up between David Bowie's Serious Moonlight at Madison Square Gardens and Bruce Springsteen at Wembley for me. The Jam in 1977 were electric. John Martyn at Glastonbury, a year later. And a lot of others, by acts that never became well known.

Guns 2 Roses - a tribute band at Exmouth Pavillion. 'Slash' was late so the rest of the band played songs which weren't overly guitar based and worked their backsides off to please the audience. They must have been terribly worried but went down a storm.

Then 'Slash' appeared to rapturous applause, played the main theme to The Godfather which was mind-blowing while the rest of the band took a break. 'Axl' had a word with management and the place stayed open later. The atmosphere was fantastic and we all had a good time.

Foo fighters, Fleetwood Mac…

But in terms of absolute joy - Backstreet Boys. Made my life. 😁

Far too many cool folk in here tonight so I'll bring it down some … backstreet boys millennium tour 1998. Magic!

Yaaay! This has made me so happy to see another one! Aren’t they amazing. DNA tour 🙌

bendmeoverbackwards · 08/05/2022 00:28

Kirsty MacColl at the Borderline, a tiny venue off Charing Cross Road, must have been around 1991.

RIP Kirsty 😢

BabyBin · 08/05/2022 00:36

Mcfly. only been to one concert though.

Dad got free tickets so i took a girl in my class i didn't really know because she was a big fan. We became best friends (fast forward 16 years) 😆

@Chishnfips I was at that Underworld gig too, right up at the front. A lady behind me from Canada had traveled to see them for the first time and promptly burst into tears when Karl came out. The roof almost came off the place during Born Slippy - fantastic show.

My best gig is also Depeche Mode - Royal Albert Hall 2010 for the Teenage Cancer Trust show. They had a string orchestra for some of Martin's solos and oh god, when Alan Wilder came on stage for Somebody the whole crowd had a melt down. I started crying, the woman next to me (dressed in impeccable early 90s style like she was an extra from the Policy of Truth video) started crying and then we looked at each other and cried and hugged it out. Small venue full of Devoted - we sang along for almost two hours straight.

Second best show by a hair was later that year - Alan Wilder's Recoil - A Strange Hour opening for Gary Numan. Intense imagery along with intense music (very dark, very dirty) and I got to meet the man himself after - lovely guy.

I was going to say pretty much every Depeche Mode gig I’ve been to but especially the one for the Princes Trust. Was absolutely amazing, what a night. Love them so much, really hope they tour again

Also loved Muse, the Drones tour and managed to get tickets for (I think it was called) One Night Only with Bon Jovi, filmed for tv, about 300 people in the studio.

The first time I saw Elbow they were amazing, the Foos are also really good, I wonder if they’ll ever play again, I can’t imagine anyone replacing Taylor Hawkins though

EnjoyingTheSilence · 08/05/2022 01:05

Argh Teenage Cancer Trust not Princes trust

One of my faves too - went with my Mum who was a big fan at the time - took shoes off and jumped about it was good fun!

Also Muse too… And rudimental were great… I have varied tastes!!

maddiemookins16mum · 08/05/2022 10:37

Abba, Royal Albert Hall, Feb 1977 - my very lovely Aunt took me (aged 12), we went to a steak house too and stayed in a hotel. It was probably the 3rd best day of my life (after having DD and getting married).
She died 20 years ago, we played Abba at her funeral.

TaxiForMaxi · 08/05/2022 10:54

Green Day American idiot tour
Pinks last tour, been to them all and she just blows you away

fleetwood Mac at Wembley a few years ago, I just couldn’t believe I was seeing them live

Wolf Alice, electric atmosphere

and I was lucky enough to win tickets to a private gig to see Elbow at the Night & Day cafe In Manchester last year. It was AMAZING, only 100 people, they sent a bucket around with their songs in to pick out and told a little story about every song.

TaxiForMaxi · 08/05/2022 10:56

Oh and also in terms of pure happiness, the McBusted tour! Went with my best mate from school, didn’t stop dancing and singing our hearts out like we were 14 again 🤣

NightmareSlashDelightful · 08/05/2022 11:01

Ha, I saw Depeche Mode for the TCT Albert Hall show too. Unrepeatably brilliant.

Prince at the O2, 3121 tour. Amazing.

Metallica always put on brilliant shows (I'm not even a metal fan, particularly, but they're just captivating live).

Beverley Knight is always incredible live. As is Goldfrapp.

Saw Grace Jones at Brighton Pride about three years ago. My word, that woman has so much charisma and magnetism. She is also bonkers.

Love this thread!

REM Monster tour, 1995, Milton Keynes Bowl. Supported by the Cranberries, Sleeper and Radiohead. God, they were fantastic and I couldn't hear properly for 3 days afterwards...

And, like many others, Bruce Springsteen @ Ricoh Arena. Went with my dad as no one else wanted the ticket. I'm so glad I did. He was unbelievably good. And the look of pure joy on my dad's face during Born To Run was wonderful....

DonnaHadDee · 08/05/2022 12:50

I think music that you heard while a teenager, or concerts you've been too, leave more of a lasting impact? I guess it is like many things that happen in those years, they seem more significant (both the good and the bad) for me.

I went to see a band called Stiff Little Fingers in 1980 in Ulster Hall. I went with a group of friends, and our parents did not know we'd went. I didn't really know their music, but the loud sound, energy and the cool crowd, wow! wow! wow!

I've seen many concerts since, and I don't like SLF music much, but an amazing experience.

Lightning020 · 08/05/2022 12:54

Michael Jackson Heal The World tour at Wembley. Approximately 1992. Simply first class it was. Highly memorable.

tsmainsqueeze · 08/05/2022 13:24

Luther Vandross , twice ,at the nec both times early 90's , he was perfect .

We saw Muse at the Arsenal ground in London and they absolutely blew us away. Saw them 2 years later at the O2 and it was terrible..... never listened to any of their music since!

Coldplay are very marmite on MN but their live shows are breathtaking. We saw them pre Covid at Wembley and it was electrifying.

Same (Coldplay) I loved the whole use of the wrist lights throughout the show as well.

Foo Fighters..Mk Bowl. Amazing..so much energy. Even from David Ghrol on his throne.

Queen Live Magic tour, Wembley. 1986
Yes I'm old Grin
NOTHING have ever come close and I've been to a lot of concerts.
Freddie Mercury just held a crowd like no-one else could, and when the whole stadium joined in with Bohemian Rhapsody... it was incredible!

Saw Queen at the Sydney Opera House in the 80s. No showman quite like Freddie since. So sad when he passed.

thingymaboob · 08/05/2022 19:01

Radiohead in Poznań Poland - 2.5 hours of brilliance

suckingonchillidogs · 08/05/2022 19:22

Prince at the O2 in 2007 - we paid a stupid amount for tickets but it was SO worth it.

Fleetwood Mac before Lindsey got the heave-ho - they were amazing

The Killers at Hyde Park with Kaiser Chiefs supporting - just a great day out

Bruce Springsteen in Cardiff - thousands of Welsh voices singing along to Thunder Road, magical

Bon Jovi in 1989 when I was a teenager and huge fan, ahh happy days

Green Day at Milton Keynes in 2005. I love the fact the official album release of the tour was the Milton Keynes show.

I was there too! Also expecting DC1 at the time! Fab gig! Loved the warm up acts too especially Jimmy eat World

mamaduckbone · 09/05/2022 22:16

Guns n Roses at Wembley arena 1991 - my first ever concert - blew me away!
Manic Street Preachers at Leicester Student Union 1992 - tiny venue with this new band - raw energy (and Richie was still with them)

I've been to loads of concerts and festivals since, but they both left a huge impression.
