Used to go to lots of concerts/gigs in my younger year, then had dc and not been to one for ages. Say watching my old favourite on you tube and just wondering what’s the best gig/concert you have ever been to and where was it

Despite being a 90s grunge fan and loving Blur in Leeds and Placebo at Brixton academy, the best gig ive been to has to be Shakira at Wembly. She was phenomenal! Talented woman.

dropthevipers · 06/05/2022 23:46

Laurie Anderson. Went to see her perform "United States" (two four hour gigs on consecutive evenings. Took an eye watering chunk out of my then student grant but worth every penny. If i had any grandkids i could tell them I saw her perform "O, Superman" live. Utterly brilliant, not much before or since has come even close.

The best live band I've ever seen are The Cure, seen them many times over 30+ years and they're always awesome! Also as PP said, Depeche Mode are amazing live (never seen them but one of my favourite albums is the 101 album which was recorded live in Pasadena in 1988). Top of my wish list to see live is U2 but tickets are so expensive

Also forgot INXS. Couldn’t take my eyes off Michael Hutchence, such stage presence!

RhannionKPSS · 06/05/2022 23:49

Kate Bush at Hammersmith in 2014
It was absolutely fantastic; she was superb, the band , the stage craft, the atmosphere, everything was just WOW!!!
The Divine Comedy last week, wonderful, Neil ❤️❤️❤️

Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band , many years ago was fab.

DinosaursEatMan · 06/05/2022 23:50

And have seem NIN multiple times, always amazing.

Forgot about that one! My first ever gig, sweet 16, 1988, The Kick tour. Michael Hutchence was wearing a green suit and I was starstruck!

Green Day supported by Frank Turner at Brixton Academy in 2013. It was a Reading warm up show, both Frank Turner’s and Green Day’s set lists were amazing and Green Day also performed Dookie in full.

Gotta love a Frank Turner show, always good and the first time I saw him is certainly one of mine.

Depeche Mode at Wembley and the crowd changing "Reach out touch faith" during Personal Jesus. I'd never particularly liked the song before but it's now one of my favourites.

Snow Patrol at the Royal Albert Hall. Such a beautiful setting. When Gary sung Dark Roman Wine his voice was so pure I could have cried.

TheVanguardSix · 06/05/2022 23:55

Pixies. Hands down. And not too long ago either (considering I am 50 and have been a fan since I was about 15). I think it was Brixton Academy, 2016.
Absolutely blew the roof off.

Now that is something! O Superman live would be insane.

notapizzaeater · 06/05/2022 23:59

Dolly Parton is the best concert I've ever seen, she did the complete 2nd half with just her in stage and no other instruments.

daisydalrymple · 07/05/2022 00:02

I was never lucky enough to see Queen, as just that bit too young, but the tribute to Freddie concert at Wembley the year after he died was phenomenal. So full of emotion, never mind the line up.
Fleetwood Mac 2003 arena tour was amazing.
Status Quo at a local venue 2003
any of the many Bon jovi concerts I’ve been to 😍
Rolling stones Wembley 1999 - I’d always been a fan of their music, but not mick jagger’s biggest fan. But just wow. He was so charismatic on stage!!!
Those damn crows at Cardiff castle last year. Just getting back into concerts after the COVID hell and mixing with others and what an amazing set they played
AC/DC donington 1991
i could go on and on!!! 🤦🏻‍♀️😂😍

youllneedthisfish · 07/05/2022 00:02

Nirvana at Reading. Teenage fan hood meets high point of fame and career. Whole audience with them.

INXS - similar but not in same league…

Bjork at Reading

Rolling Stones always - but especially Mick singing Wild Horses with Florence Welch at the Olympic Stadium.

twistingmylemon · 07/05/2022 00:02

I'm not going to say the best concert I've ever been to because he's not really my thing.

However, I took my DD to see Ed Sheeran twice - once at Wembley and once at an outdoor gig and I have to say I was really impressed by how good he was, particularly considering he is on his own with just a guitar, no band, no back up. Nothing, just him and he absolutely did the space justice.

mrsfollowill · 07/05/2022 00:03

Forgot INXS at Birmingham 1989/1990 ish - Dear God! Michael Hutchence in cycling shorts was a sight for sore eyes!! and Prince early 1990's in Sheffield was outside my usual comfort zone but was brilliant even though we were right at the back on the top tier.

Beamur · 07/05/2022 00:04

Scissor Sisters in Manchester quite a few years ago, great fun.
Belle and Sebastian in Liverpool even more years ago!

Queen Live Magic tour, Wembley. 1986
Yes I'm old Grin
NOTHING have ever come close and I've been to a lot of concerts.
Freddie Mercury just held a crowd like no-one else could, and when the whole stadium joined in with Bohemian Rhapsody... it was incredible!

That concert is on my time machine list!

Feckingfeck · 07/05/2022 00:09

Well... what i thought would be the best concert.

Mothers day i think it was 2015 surprised DM with tickets to see Celina dion in Paris. Really close to the front. With flights and hotel it cost a fortune but I thought its a once in a life time thing.

Except....

She speaks french. This was in France. So she spoke and sang French most of the time 🤦‍♀️

Even in French she sounded great though.

It really was-can recall the whole thing like it was yesterday-have known very, very few performers with the presence of Anderson-I seriously would pay good money to hear her reading out the telephone directory.

PinotGrigioCat · 07/05/2022 00:13

Placebo at Pink Pop 2009, we were front of stage and was amazing! Also at Newport Leisure Centre 2016 brilliant atmosphere. Depeche Mode 2017 at the 02 blew my mind as a life long fan! Dave Gahan 2013 at Shepherds Bush Empire, love him so much! Angie Stone at The Lantern Bristol, such an intimate gig and amazing performance. James supported by Radiohead (who were on the Pablo Honey release tour circa 1993). Larry Graham and his amazing band in Camden 2015, got asked to dance on stage then went for drinks with the band after, a crazy night. Love love love love music and have missed it during covid.

Latenightreader · 07/05/2022 00:13

Paul Simon in Hyde Park - first time I saw him live and it was the Graceland anniversary tour. He played the entire album, and loads of his other songs too, so much more than I expected. Sound of Silence was one of his encores and at the first notes my best friend and I grabbed hold of each other and hung on. Utterly magical.

In contrast there’s a Canadian folk band I love (The Once). I’ve seen them a dozen times, but one of the best gigs was in a tiny back room in a stuffy pub in Manchester. It felt so personal and joyful, and they chatted to everyone afterwards.

PinotGrigioCat · 07/05/2022 00:14

@nursingcomplete2014 great thread by the way!

rhowton · 07/05/2022 00:17

Coldplay X&Y 2005 in Crystal Palace. It was my first major concert and I loved every minute of it.

Floralnomad · 07/05/2022 00:18

It’s difficult to choose we went to Live Aid and the 1986 Wembley Queen show , but neither of them were as good as any of the Springsteen shows I’ve seen . I also went to the last Cher tour because my sister had tickets and it was absolutely fantastic despite not being remotely interested in her music . I’ve seen everyone I wanted to see over the years aside from the original Eagles line up .

I’m not really a Sheehan fan either, but I did watch one of his Wembley concerts on TV. You have to respect a guy who can command a vast 90,000 capacity stadium on his own with an acoustic guitar and a (very sophisticated) loop pedal.
