As due to the cost of living crisis, me and my partner cannot afford to go this year!

Can any of you afford to go?

We got a unexpected work bonus so decided to do it. Cheaply though, 1500 sc for a week for 4 of us.

PAFMO · 04/05/2022 14:25

I go abroad every year because the places I want to go to are a damn sight cheaper than places I'd want to go in the UK.
I'm paying just under a grand including flights to Madrid and Lisbon for 8 nights in total staying in 4 and 5 star respectively. Book early, price compare, plan and budget. I recently had 3 nights in a premier Inn in the south west that came to £500 once food was factored in.

ISpyCobraKai · 04/05/2022 14:29

Ha, no, I've been once in 20 years and it was an all expenses weekend in Switzerland that I won on here!

I'm having 3 days in London, staying 2 nights in a cheap air b&b and doing all free things, oh and getting the overnight bus there and back from Glasgow.

Yes but we are adjusting. A mini-break in a European city and a week all inclusive. We’d usually take 3/4 trips a year, book a villa with friends etc.

thecatsthecats · 04/05/2022 14:43

By the end of June I'll have been away abroad for the fourth time, but I may well have spent less than someone who's going once. Afford is all in the context.

PurpleDinosaurpark · 04/05/2022 14:50

Sadly not. My last 'abroad- holiday was 2010. We both have decent jobs but there just isn't anything left over to save after everything is paid.

Closethefrontdoor · 04/05/2022 14:56

Hell will freeze over first 😔

Loss of income due to chronic multiple degenerative illnesses and DH being my longterm carer now.

We never managed a week overseas before so we certainly won’t now.

Bloodybridget · 04/05/2022 14:57

DP and I have booked what seems to me quite a cheap coach holiday in France! Lots of meals and booze and some excursions included. First time overseas since May 2019.

stormelf · 04/05/2022 15:13

No, but that's mainly a choice and not strictly financial. I have three under four who haven't got passports yet. We are going away to Butlins for a just for tots break this summer and will probably do the same next year. We don't like flying for environmental reasons and pre kids we travelled around Europe by train. With three so young this isn't practical so will be holidaying in UK for at least the next few years if not longer.

ssd · 04/05/2022 16:42

No way can we afford going abroad. Money is too tight now. But we only went for a maximum of 5 nights abroad whenever we went, we aren't a fortnight abroad every year family, unfortunately.

I love that you won that holiday! Love it when folk that deserve a break get it. Doesn't bloody happen often.

maddiemookins16mum · 04/05/2022 17:44

Yes, but at the expense of not doing stuff to the house so leaving booking anything until later. Might just do a cottage in mid September or Spain in November.

Lightning020 · 04/05/2022 18:35

I may go to Devon a few days over the summer. Not been for a while. Sometimes England if somewhere scenic is as good as abroad.

HelloDoris · 04/05/2022 20:03

Yes, but only because I found a good deal to go to centre parcs "crappier brother" in Belgium.. but a week away with ferry and day tickets to a Dutch theme park was cheaper then almost things I could find in the UK (well places I want to go in the UK).

TheFairyCaravan · 04/05/2022 20:18

Yes we can. We’re going to the Canaries for 11nights in September, just me and DH. Both our kids are grown up, and they have holidays abroad booked with their girlfriends.

Norush4 · 04/05/2022 20:18

I've got 2 holidays booked. One of the is September ending so it was cheap to Portugal and the other to Greece next month. Portugal was a bargain if anyone works for NHS TUI have their own seperate site with deals if you Google it. Also there's a £200 discount code that can be added on to both TUI and TUI NHS for single parents.

Itawapuddytat · 04/05/2022 20:26

Yes, but one was paid for a couple of years ago and postponed because of Covid (we've already been last month) and the second one, booked for the summer, is not a very pricey one (and we have not been abroad since 2019, so we managed to save up a bit in the "holiday pot").

Bearsan · 04/05/2022 21:07

Yes we're going to Greece in June. 4* HB £500 each. holidays a week in September for similar price. We have two booked for next year already. I'm retired and dh works for himself part time. We've always prioritised travel and saved up for years to do lots of holidays and we can go in term time when it's cheaper.
Going abroad is actually about the same price as a UK break.
We've already taken our pre COVID postponed holiday which was fantastic.

midsomermurderess · 04/05/2022 21:21

Yes. I spent the Easter weekend in Northumberland and will have a week in Italy in June and 2 weeks in Greece in September. I've paid off my mortgage and my outgoings are not very high. Next year, I'll probably have just one, 2-week break. Look, life is different for all of us.

amusedbush · 04/05/2022 21:53

We last went abroad in 2019 and we haven't left Glasgow at all since the pandemic started, so we'll be going somewhere. We were planning to go to Turkey in June but we've decided to push that to October (because it's cheaper) and we'll probably go to London or Manchester for a few days in the summer.
