Anyone own a pizza oven?

Are they worth buying? What sort of features should I look out for? How much am I likely going to need to spend? Are they just a big old gimmick or something we are actually likely to use?

DH and I don’t eat meat so a BBQ is a rad pointless. But quite like the idea of whipping up a pizza on a summers evening.

We have a gas fired Ooni and we absolutely love it. We use it once a week/every other week. But we are a pizza-loving family generally. There is a definite knack to it but worth the money if you think you’ll get the use out of it.

FoodieToo · 03/05/2022 23:57

RedToothBrush it’s not MY pizza that’s soggy !!!!

RiverSkater · 04/05/2022 00:17

Buy yourself a decent pizza stone and if you can be bothered to use that you might be up for a proper oven. It's quite a knack getting a pizza onto the stone and into the oven!

Home made pizza with the pizza stone is fantastic. 🍕

OMG, I have a DeliVita pizza oven which is wood fired and its bloody amazing!! I got it for my husband's birthday present for his 40th and we had a party at home.

It cooks a pizza in 90 seconds so brilliant for parties, and we cook other stuff like BBQ ribs and steaks in it too. Can't believe how much I use it. My friends all want one

We’ve got a lockdown ooni karu 12. Love it, uses charcoal and wood so no pellets to buy, makes amazing pizza for about £1 per pizza (and that’s using Italian pizza flour, tomatoes, cheese etc). Can also be used with cast iron for steak, fajitas etc. It’s well used in our house.

DoThePropeller · 07/05/2022 20:31

Can I ask everyone what recipe they find best?

MsRinky · 07/05/2022 20:40

I love my Roccbox. Use the wood burner occasionally to do lower-temp stuff, but always gas for pizzas. Might have pizza tomorrow now...

JohnNutLips · 07/05/2022 20:53

We have the Ooni Karu 12 - uses wood and can attach the converter for gas. We love it and it gets loads of use through summer. I like making the dough, you just have to factor in the making and proving time. Do it!

I copy Vito lacopelli recipes , he has a YouTube channel, he’s the best .

Use the PizzaApp and aim for 64/65 hydration

HundredMilesAnHour · 07/05/2022 22:54

My neighbour has the gas Ooni. So he does all the hard work and we, his neighbours, turn up with drinks and enjoy the benefits. He's an excellent cook normally but his pizzas are outstanding.

I don't think I could be bothered with all the prep (or tidying away) but I'm very happy to benefit from someone else's Ooni. Grin

I've got an indoor sage piazzaloa, it's big but v good and so easy to use. Was about £500/600

mummabubs · 07/05/2022 23:02

Have you considered a plug in kitchen one OP? My husband bought one from Amazon (think it's a "ferrari" brand import from Germany). Think it was about £120 but we just plug it in and it cooks pizzas on stone in 4 mins or so. We absolutely love it, use it at least once a fortnight and haven't bought a supermarket pizza in nearly 2 years now. Exactly the same effect as the huge outdoor ones (we've used those too in rental accommodation) and might give you a cheaper way to explore whether you'd actually use one?

BoJoGoGo · 17/07/2022 19:39

Any recommendations for ready made pizza based?

KnottyKnitting · 17/07/2022 20:09

We considered this but on the end got a pizza stone. We ( well DH) make pizzas from scratch and they are sooooo much better on the stone! We have pizza every week!

Kezzie200 · 17/07/2022 20:09

Ooni fyra. Love it. It's also portable so we've taken it on cottage holidays.

Took a while to get used to it but pizzas are much cheaper than BBQ in food. I buy chilled pizza dough bases from Aldi at 99p each.

Last night we as a family had...

Bbq sauce base, chicken, sweetcorn, red onion, bacon and grated mozzarella.

Tomato base, grated mozzarella, grated cheddar and basil.

Garlic butter base, sprinkle of parmesan, grated cheddar, grated mozzarella and dabs of roquefort.

Garlic butter base, tuna, anchovy, red onion, grated mozzarella (should have had olives but I forgot them!), and

Garlic butter base, sprinkle of grated mozzarella and few dabs of red onion chutney. This was more like a garlic bread.

And a big side salad.

I've frozen some in slices for lunches.

Kezzie200 · 17/07/2022 20:12

@BoJoGoGo

Aldi chilled pre made bases are great. Pre rolled and 99p each.

Can't be frozen though...not sure why, maybe the yeast? Or maybe they've already been frozen.

BoJoGoGo · 17/07/2022 20:13

That’s great thank you.

piefacedClique · 17/07/2022 20:16

We have the Ooni wood pellet one. Use the bbc dough recipe which is foolproof!

www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/pizzadoughbase_70980/amp

We’ve used it three times this week! Bought a bag of wood pellets off Amazon last year rather than the Ooni branded ones and they last forever

Kezzie200 · 17/07/2022 20:16

@HundredMilesAnHour

Prep is easy

Use premade, rolled bases.

Use a pizza flour to stop dough sticking to paddle.

Put ingredients in separate bowls ready to add on top. So you get a variety of pizza not all the same.

Buy grated mozzarella, cheddar.

Buy tomato base sauce, a good quality bbq sauce or make garlic butter.

Cleaning up is no different than any ordinary meal.

Hubby does the cooking as its "outside"

Kezzie200 · 17/07/2022 20:18

@BoJoGoGo no problem. Look for them in chilled fridges next to the ready rolled chilled pastry. At the moment they are in blue wrapping.

BoJoGoGo · 17/07/2022 20:21

Thank you, hopefully they’ll turn out better than my actually on fire/raw first effort.

piefacedClique · 17/07/2022 20:27

We had a cob pizza oven for two years and they were like that…. Cremated around the outside.::: raw in the centre… the Ooni made a massive difference. For pizza sauce we just warm a tin of chopped tomatoes in a sauce pan with some oregano and basil and mash with a masher….. cheap as chips!

BoJoGoGo · 17/07/2022 20:31

I think I’ll stick to chips!

Kezzie200 · 17/07/2022 20:33

@BoJoGoGo

Raw/on fire. Do you have a temperature gauge.to check right heat? Also watch them, they are so fast to cook! I think ours needs 400 degrees c, about 30 seconds, rotate, another 30.seconds.

Sometimes it's a little more but the more you do the more you get used to it.

Plus don't top with too much. I dont use real tomato as the intense short burst of heat simply makes the water come out of them and leaves it in puddles. But I like my tomatoes so have them on the side as a cold side salad.

Keep trying.we have had fails too
