Or are they being deleted?

Why was his wife even asked? What’s what her husband chooses to do in his workplace in meetings, got to do with her? There’s blame on Parish’s wife for his actions, by the media seeking her comment. She’s not part of this story. That’s misogyny and she’s internalised it, as many women have.

If a woman MP did this (I know a woman MP wouldn’t ever, but let’s pretend) would we expect her husband to be wheeled out to comment on her alleged porn at work habits?

No. He wouldn’t give any comment on that or would say it was private and that would be seen as perfectly acceptable. The blame for the intimidating and creepy workplace behaviour and the failure of her constituents and her shocking failure to live up to the standards of her job as an MP would be seen as completely her responsibility.

She would be expected to resign instantly because her judgement was so unbelievably off the charts, or she would be sacked instantly.

What? You can’t seriously think that? You think if a man watches porn at work it’s nothing to do with his wife at all and that if the genders were reversed no one would ask the husband? You can’t be serious? 😂

@minou123 haha I really believed it was for nine minutes.

KenAdams · 30/04/2022 08:29

So did I!

Ha ha ha ha 😂
I'm so sorry

It may well have been for 9 minutes, who knows. As always, we have to wait for the investigation!

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 30/04/2022 09:17

I got the 9 minutes Boris reference. In fairness, there's so much Tory sleaze to poke fun at these days, it is hard to keep up.

His wife is reported as working for him as a junior secretary. Presumably without any open and fair recruitment process. This practice has recently been belatedly banned. So basically if he goes, she loses her job too.

Good. Time they both retired into obscurity.

Sloth66 · 30/04/2022 09:29

@Blossomtoes
completely agree. But what a nice gravy train to enjoy for many years. He’ll fight tooth and nail to stay in the job. Meanwhile in the real world , certainly in places where I’ve worked, he’d have been dismissed

runningpram · 30/04/2022 09:54

This shouldn't be swept under the carpet for a number of reasons:
First, I've sat close to men who are watching porn on public transport and it's a really horrible experience. It does make you feel unsafe.
Second, I don't think the accidental 'briefly clicking on a link' excuse works. On the occasions where I've experienced this, it took at least 30 seconds or so for me to register what's going on. Partly because I couldn't believe someone would do this in public. So I'd imagine it would take longer in HoC, given it's even more shocking. In addition the TWO MPs who complained were in the same party, so I'm sure they would have wanted to be really sure of their facts before accusing a colleague.
Third, while looking at porn on public transport is grim and intimidating, you might (very, very generously!) argue that for some men it's a way to kick back after a long day at work and they perhaps don't realise they're under public scrutiny.
The complete opposite is true in this case. He has Parliament TV cameras pointed at him all day long. He is surrounded and often at very close quarters with female MPs.
Fourth, and I think possibly most outrageously, the bloke is literally paid £85k a year to sit in debates and shape legislation. In committee where one of these incidents allegedly took place, he is supposed to be scrutinising experts and politicians about past and present events and policy and trying to uncover where improvements can be made.
He was actually chair of the DEFRA committee, which is dealing with heavy stuff like the impact of Brexit and the knock on impact of the Ukraine invasion on supply chains. How on earth could he or the people around him, do their incredibly important jobs, if he was watching porn at the time.

ilovesooty · 30/04/2022 13:06

Breaking news on the BBC says he's expected to quit.

Blossomtoes · 30/04/2022 14:34

He’s resigned. Some of the callers on Any Answers today are batshit!

I was listening slack jawed earlier - bonus points to the guy helpfully telling us all that he and his girlfriend like watching porn....

I know. And the woman who wanted fewer women in Parliament and the victim blaming one - I could barely believe my ears.

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 30/04/2022 14:46

"He said the first time was accidental after looking at tractors, but the second time was deliberate."

Confused

Neil Parish MP: I'm resigning after porn 'moment of madness' https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-61284686

Taken from BBC News App

"He said the first time was accidental after looking at tractors, but the second time was deliberate."

Not quite sure how you get from Massey Ferguson or John Deere to porn by accident tbh.

Second time was deliberate? I'm pretty sure he'll have done this more than twice. What he probably meant was the second time he was caught looking at porn in a public place.

Insane isn't it?! I enjoy shagging my boyfriend but funnily enough if I did it in front of people in a workplace I would expect to get fired.

It's baffling some people seem determined not to view this as a hostile work environment. Sitting near a colleague in a workplace while they watch porn is a position nobody should have to be in.

And isn't he incredibly unlucky to have only done this on purpose once but be caught that one time? 🙄 They really do think we're stupid.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 30/04/2022 15:28

TRACTORS.

I thought we had covered all the excuses up thread - didn't see that one coming!

Frogslegsbigfeet · 30/04/2022 15:28

I’m fairly sure he’s done this on the regular and he’s resigning because others saw it too, Apparently others were trying to get pictures of him at it because he was known for it.

what a weird, sick, perverted little man. We have all met someone like him. He did it knowing others could see him doing it, , because he thought he could and because he thought it upset those women.

it’s a power play as much as anything else. He will be doing it at home in front of his wife too, guaranteed.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 30/04/2022 15:29

Poor choice of words there Blush only just realised.

Seen what his wife has said? Ignore the typos. This is lifted straight from bbc news

"I'm a woman," she was quoted say saying. "Hence why the women were so cross. It's degrading. It's demanding. But on the other hand it takes two to tango. There must be women posing for all this."

Honestly, I know I said this just before ... but having read this I have no words still.
